There were signs outside one of my schools today, where the kiddos thanked us for our efforts during the hardest year of education. I was touched that they didn’t forget this anonymous IT guy.

1930s historically accurate planted aquarium
Streetwise replied to Daniel's topic in Photos, Videos & Journals
I appreciate that @Daniel has helped normalize top-offs as enough for many balanced tanks. I haven’t done a water change since [redacted].- 294 replies

@Trish, I spotted that randomly, and saved the gif, but forgot to look up the product. It could be useful in gardening, and in our planted aquarium hobby.

You really only need the Apex EL model for freshwater. The optional leak detection module is probably the best selling point to a non-hobbyist partner. Compare the value of your livestock, hardwood floors, etc. to the cost of insurance.

@Mmiller2001 asked about programming in another thread. The Apex has a simple programming language, where you can schedule actions, or trigger actions based on various conditions, such as temperature, pH, etc. Here is a basic example of one of my outlets: Fallback OFF Set ON If FeedA 000 Then OFF If FeedB 000 Then OFF If FeedC 000 Then OFF If FeedD 000 Then OFF If Power Power Off 002 Then OFF If Power Apex Off 002 Then OFF This will turn off the outlet if I engage any of the feeding modes, or after two minutes if the Apex detects that power is off from a power brick independent of my UPS. I also have alerts set for power outages and my leak-detection kit. When I ran a heater, I also had it set to turn off or on based on a certain temperature range. Now the more interesting options include programming an outlet for a CO2 solenoid based on pH, or controlling water changes and automatic top-offs with water level monitors. You could even control automatic dosing based on timing or parameters. The reef-keepers do amazing stuff to automate everything. There is an Apex forum with lots of different examples.

New plants how to keep overnight
Streetwise replied to Lauren A's topic in Plants, Algae, and Fertilizers
I like to stage new plants in a bucket with a sponge filter and a light. This way you can take your time with planting. -

I agree; White Clouds are amazingly resilient, as are Neocaridina. Those are my outdoor favorites for the Northeast.

@CalmedByFish, it does take patience. I will probably re-do my Askoll 20 because I have learned so much in the last few years. With organic soil, I try to make the plants very happy, and then add snails, fish, and shrimp.

I haven't done anything with my tanks in a while. I still wanted to take a few photos. This 16 gallon bow has been a real source of joy. I tried giving the tank away because it was my marine tank that got flooded during tropical storm Irene in 2011. I think this was the first tank where I refined my layering for organic soil and sand/gravel cap, and got good plant growth. The fish, shrimp, and snails do an amazing job at cleaning, and the plants drive all the filtration. All I have to do is feed and top-off water. I love my hair-algae mullet.

Beautiful, @Patrick_G! You certainly have a pair of green thumbs!

One of my sailing buddies sent me a photo about why we don’t sail in lightning storms: This is what happens to carbon fiber when struck! Fortunately, the sailor was ok. I have experienced Saint Elmo’s fire, which was unnerving enough.

I would sell or giveaway the 29 gallon, and transport your inhabitants in buckets, with a thermal blanket, air, and other suggestions from the forum. You shouldn't have to worry about glass for this move. The 5 gallon should be safe to pack empty.

Great outcome to the story, plus nice shoes there.

I enjoy keeping some of my small tanks with just plants and bladder snails. They look neat, and I could drop in fish if necessary. I also use them to hold plants before planting, and to grow out houseplant cuttings.
-
My suggestion is always more plants!

I consider Purigen as a special needs filter media, rather than standard media. What are you trying to remove?

shrimp tank Questions about shrimp and tanks
Streetwise replied to Just a Pygmy Corydora's topic in General Discussion
I love tiny tanks, and I consider many of my systems as wet houseplants. The smaller the tank, the longer I wait for it to season. -
Organic soil as a substrate
Streetwise replied to legion1capone's topic in Plants, Algae, and Fertilizers
I mostly use organic soil from a local composter here in Vermont. However, I tend to pick topsoil over potting soil because it is not quite as loaded, and doesn't usually have a manure component. I think this is what @KBOzzie59 is referencing. How do you plan to cap it with sand and/or gravel? I have been moving towards thinner layers with each tank, but I am always curious to hear about recipes from other hobbyists.
