  1. I save every plant scrap and cutting in my utility tanks and tubs. It always feels great to plant something that you rehabilitated yourself.
  2. @Sal, I reread your first post and noticed the scholarship. Excellent! Here are my favorite places for buying used Subarus in Vermont: Auto Creek Snowfire 😏
  3. @OnlyGenusCaps, let me know where you live, and I bet that I can find you a sailing opportunity. The secret is that everyone who races a sailboat needs crew, and totally depends upon them for a functional team. My father always preferred to train new crew with little experience, because they didn’t have any bad habits. I am on the lowest-cost end of sailboat racing, with a used Subaru budget. However, even the big budget programs have college kids, teachers, retail workers, tech folks, etc. onboard. Anyone who shows up on-time is welcome.
  4. Two random updates: I still have my maple leaf decomposition bucket, making sweet tannin water that lowers pH, not that I am doing anything with it yet. I have a hard time getting rid of any life from my tanks. I have filtered snails out to save them when doing water changes. I kept the hair algae that I pulled from my bow, along with some mulm from sponges.
  5. @Sal, It looks like UVM has an equestrian team, which she probably already knows about. The Flynn Theatre is a downtown venue for a lot of performing arts. The Lyric Theatre is a local theatre company that produces musicals and other performances. A few of the dance studios that I have heard about are Lines Vermont, South End Studio, and Urban Dance Complex. There should be a lot of art opportunities on campus, but there is also Burlington City Arts. She might enjoy getting involved with the Peace & Justice Center. The local independent newspaper is Seven Days. I would also encourage her to get an Enhanced Driver's License, since the border to Québec is only 45 minutes north, and Montréal is only another hour north of that. The EDL lets you cross without bringing a passport. If you are driving to drop her off or visit, my favorite way to enter the state is via the Champlain ferry route between Essex, NY, and my hometown of Charlotte, VT. I found a list of some Burlington restaurants that my dad compiled for visitors: A Single Pebble, 133 Bank St (outstanding Asian) L/D $$$ Farmhouse Tap & Grill, 160 Bank St (burgers & beer plus) L/D $$ Hen of the Wood, 55 Cherry St (gourmet everything) D $$$ Leunig’s Bistro, Corner of Church & College (French icon) L/D $$ Many options on Church St, an open-air pedestrian mall L/D Skinny Pancake, 60 Lake St (classy crepes, near the waterfront) L/D $$ Splash (at Burlington Boathouse on the waterfront) L/D $$ Trattoria Delia, 152 St Paul St (excellent Italian) D $$$
  6. Let me know some of her hobby or student job interests, and I can definitely share more. BTW, our LPS is The Pet Advantage if you happen to come by car with a bucket.
  7. @Sal, they rent kayaks, canoes, and paddle boards too. If she needs to purchase any outdoor clothing or gear, I recommend checking Outdoor Gear Exchange first, because they have tons of used, demo, and consignment stuff. Burton periodically has massive sales at their factory store, and there are a lot of ski/snowboard swap meet events before the season. UVM has a Ski and Snowboard Club, which has free bus service for many of the local mountains. ReSOURCE is a local non-profit, which is a great source of used furniture, home goods, and technology. If she moves into a house or apartment, I recommend signing up for Front Porch Forum, which is a free neighborhood or town-specific mailing list, with local for-sale, giveaway, lost pets, tradespeople suggestions, neighborhood news, etc., all with real names. I have helped a few cats get home because of it. Let me know if there is any other local knowledge I can provide!
  8. Awesome, @Sal! She will love it here. When you come for a visit, you could have a Nerm day at ECHO, Leahy Center for Lake Champlain: https://www.echovermont.org And if she wants to get into sailing, The Community Sailing Center is right on the waterfront. UVM has a club sailing team too. https://communitysailingcenter.org
  9. This hobby has so many things that are “worthy of attention”! I finally listened to Randy’s podcast interview with Daniel, and he mentioned how live-food tanks and tubs represent a whole slice of the hobby. I am thinking of using one of my utility buckets to learn how to culture green water.
  10. Pico shrimp tanks are so much fun! I have two no-tech 2.5 gallon tanks with shrimp, with a third unit marinating algae for more shrimp. As far as heaters, I have personally kept neo shrimp and white clouds down to 52F, and they can go colder. I currently only heat my Betta tank.
  11. Dear younger me, Figure out your water, and find the minimal treatment necessary. It might be a bucket. Skip all the other technology and go right to sponge filters first. Augment if necessary. Save tons of money. Buy twice as many plants. Follow recipes before improvising. Check in with me in a few years.
  12. I should rephrase: some plants like duckweed and water lettuce prefer to have the top of each leaf exposed to the atmosphere. By unrooted, I was thinking of plants that can live immersed or emmersed, with or without taking root. Hopefully someone can clarify the botanical terminology.
  13. I don’t have any official definitions, but I would describe hornwort and guppy grass as unrooted plants. I would consider duckweed, salvinia, and water lettuce to be floating plants. I think the survival conditions for each might be different, based on access to surface air during photosynthesis and respiration.
  14. Looking great! I hope you enjoy the siesta schedule.
  15. @Mary Beth, do any of your local stores have reptile supplies? Sometimes that is where you have to look for wood.
  16. Try a long Co-Op plant bag, and invert it periodically.
  17. Can anyone suggest any very clear buckets, or food-grade containers, with handles and lids? I would like to get a better view, and still be able to take them outside.
  18. I have various ideas of shared media for this, but it should easy on production.
  19. I haven’t gone that big yet, but I always love tons of plants and tall wood. Place wood like a tripod for nice hiding spots.
