  1. They look shortfin to me. If you haven't seen this yet, here is a journal that could help. @WhitecloudDynasty has a lot of good White Cloud content. He inspired me to breed White Clouds. I have some in tote ponds and some inside that are producing fry so I have the numbers and can start selecting next year. Good luck!
  2. Yes! I saw this species in an older fish guide and wondered why I hadn't seen it before. Anyone know why this species is not more popular?
  3. For your heat issue, if you can partially bury or insulate the tub that can restrict temperature fluctuations. My 55 gal drum with white clouds swings pretty good between high 60's and 70's with Colorado Springs weather (not buried). I mostly buried a 70 Gal HD tote in the ground for my goldfish "pond" and that has stayed fairly consistent in the 60's. Our air temp went from a high of 100 F to 65F in 24-48 hrs this week. I will say, My barrel pond with 1 male 2 female white clouds has dozens of fry that suddenly showed up this weekend. I have a 45 gal tank to put them but if the trend continues I could easily over populate so keep that in mind. Also. If you really want to breed, go for it. It is ridiculously exciting to see little fry show up.
  4. Probably keep the one Angel. If you are interested in a diverse community you can look into a small group of pigmy corydoras or a cory that you like (some get bigger than others). More of the same tetras would probably be better then a different type.
  5. I think your drawing should/could be posted on the Memes page. The reality is it could be captioned with a "any fish I love" and it would be accurate for everyone here. Love Pooka! Any update on the Bichers?
  6. I am pretty sure they take heat in consideration when shipping and package appropriately. When I received plants in the winter there was a heat pack and insulating bag. Also keep in mind that they refrigerate and use refrigerated containers because of the length of time it takes for them, in bulk, to ship from the manufacturer and how long they are anticipating having to store them.
  7. I'm sure the stocking is fine. I have been dealing with being "overstocked" with my goldfish I bought when first starting out and found that I just can't feed as often. I like your idea for hides as they help to break up visual space too. I say get plants that are available and recommended for your region. Know that any plant matter in the water exposed to the fish might get nibbled on. One thing I noticed with my fish was numbers helped them to be bold. I transferred two to my pond (from a too small fish tank) and I hardly saw them. When I put the other four in the pond, all six were out and swimming boldly. Good luck and have fun!
  8. Are you dosing the tank with ferts? It is hard to tell with the picture (I'm assuming the cloudy is the glass and not the water) but that back string reminds me of when my betta got fin rot. I noticed my betta didn't seem to like me dosing fertilizers and got fin rot a day or two after. Not necessarily the fertilizer, could have been him not liking the nitrates. Silly question maybe but are you dechlorinating your tap water and changing with approximately same temp water (or small amounts)? You may want to stop feeding but if you are that worried drop a single piece of a bug bite and see what happens. If he is not interested, I wouldn't leave it in.
  9. Question, does he have any sign of sickness or just lethargy? Bettas have gills so they can still extract oxygen from water but they also breathe from the surface. Another is, are your parameters stable? fluctuating parameters can cause stress, maybe check the temperature of the tank at night to make sure they are not dropping.
  10. This post makes me feel better. 7 kinds including BBS. Still more than needed for my amount and types of fish...
  11. It is possible generations of fry will prey on other generations. I haven't specifically about CPD's but i don't know why they wouldn't. If you want to mix generations maybe put in a lot of cover?
  12. In the summer my tanks run 78 because of the room temp but we don't run AC much. Have you thought about/do you have room to add fish that may eat the babies or the eggs (cories?) if you don't want more? Also maybe wait and see how it goes. More fish could mean more predation and less babies. You could also have an auto renew of tetras. As the older ones naturally pass, younger generations take their place.
  13. Some fish do for sure. Most of the ones I can think of that do are larger fish who live and spawn in different environments, often spending part of their life in marine environments. Some small fish maybe not so much. I remember an "aquarist podcast" episode... maybe 67? They were talking about fish found in one section of a stream where hot springs fed warm water that allowed fish to survive in that section but not farther down, past some falls, where water was significantly cooler. This means these populations are not moving beyond but staying in an aria that is habitable and allows breeding. Something to remember is that many animals are trying to minimize activity because it carries risk (predation, burning precious energy). If you are a grazer, you are likely to go where food is (carp, deer). Ambush predators (angler fish, snapping turtle) don't want to move because then they give them selves away. Some reasons to move are food, mating (finding a mate or acquiring a mate), territory (often established for finding food and mating). Watching my white clouds, they are most active when I feed them, they are looking for food, or mating. After chow time they sit and hide in the plants. My corydoras are the same. Fish that are constantly moving, with behaviors that are akin to pelagic fish, are ones that likely need large spaces. Cory talking about his paroon shark make me think of this where they were constantly moving and he had concerns about them in his large tanks. All that to say, some likely need bigger tanks, some are likely fine. I would love to hear from a specialists that studies minnows or small species of fish to know if there are ranges based off different species or such.
  14. I was wondering. I have started looking into starting a salt tank and have heard of them the most. What is the name of the RODI system you have? Do you like it? Feel like it is working well?
  15. Have you figured out what kind of pest anemone it is?
  16. When I first started feeding BBS I saw hydra. After a while the tank balanced out for me. I ended up feeding less BBS and fed more flake/pellets/hikari and the hydra "disappeared". I now feed daily/every other live and frozen BBS and haven't seen hydra in months. I would doubt that the eggs brought hydra, most likely they were there and exploded because of the good feeding conditions live baby brine shrimp creates. Maybe try playing around with feeding and see if you can get the tank to balance.
  17. It is possible the corydoras would eat the eggs.
  18. Mine like bug bites along with bbs. They also eat Xtreme flake and Repashy community.
  19. "no fishing" XD Thanks for sharing your tank, I am looking forward to see it's progress. I feel like we don't see too many large tanks.
  20. If it is an extended freeze, making sure the water is oxygenated is something to consider. Many ponds keep a pond de-icer floating so there will be oxygen exchange
  21. can you maybe post a couple of pictures, that may help a little. She likely would be okay another day with out food.
  22. My first betta enjoyed shrimp snacks, my second showed to be a bit aggressive and interested in shrimp so he lives alone. If you want to try it, be prepared for the possibility of having zero shrimp in that tank.
  23. If you want good spawns I would caution using cory cats, make it species only. They are good at finding edible things in the substrate. But them after to put together in your tank.
