  1. I have an electric blue acara in mine. It's been a great fish so far. Very active and always excited when somebody comes near the tank. I have a pearl gourami as well but it mostly stays in the back picking algae off of plants and it chases my rainbowfish relentlessly.
  2. If I was going to do CO2 I would go with a pressurized setup. It's more initial investment but more cost effective in the long run. The tanks would also last longer between refills than with the small cartridge based systems. Personally I don't think the fluval co2 kits are worth it.
  3. I don't like them mainly because they are a closed-source fish. I prefer open source software and definitely want to be legally allowed to breed a fish. I'm not a fan of GMO in general. The idea that one day a single company will be able to tell you that you can't grow tomatoes is ludicrous not to mention dangerous.
  4. Haven't been involved in decades but I had fun as as kid with R/C cars. I had the Lunchbox which was like a monster truck van and my buddy had a similar car called blackfoot it had a pickup truck body. Good times offroading with those.
  5. First tank was around 1989-90ish. No clue on the size but probably between 5 and 10 gallons. Bright blue gravel with a bunch of what I think were just feeder guppies and a single betta fish. Everything was dead in less than a week. Nothing was done prior to introducing fish other than letting water sit out in jugs for 24 hours before putting it in to eliminate chlorine. Just as the fish store instructed.
  6. Maybe the nerites did it? Only joking. But a relative kept a tank that only had mystery snails and a single betta fish. The betta didn't last a week and no body was ever found. It didn't appear sick but obviously snails can't actually murder fish. Or can they?
  7. I drive to a different city to maintain a relative's tanks because they don't take them as seriously as I think they should. It's also not unusual at all for me to be playing world of warcraft and have a second monitor with some sort of fish stream going on.
  8. I'd probably go with neon tetras. I know they are so common but every time I see them in person I'm always drawn to that tank. I really like harlequin rasboras and serpae tetras as well. I wouldn't go with a rainbowfish if you're looking for good schoolers/peaceful. They are very active and spar more than school. They are cool fish but they aren't the best fit for that peaceful community tank vibe imo.
  9. I've never sold on ebay. Do you get the buyer's IP address? That would be nice since you could just ban it and enforce a zip code matching IP policy to prevent them from using a VPN.
  10. Love mystery snails. They are the only snail I've found that my acara won't attack, fully grown of course.
  11. I think a lot of the central/south american cichlids are underrated. They don't seem to be as popular as African cichlids. I love em though.
  12. The corys barbels being torn up on substrate is a fish keeping myth that will never die.
  13. My Acara would love those. He'd have the tank under control in a day.
  14. This interests me a lot more than it should. My 5 gallon buckets are from Tractor Supply. I might have to do some measuring for science later lol.
  15. I had BDBS set up for a bit. Any cloudiness should long be gone by now. There's something else going on in there.
  16. I have a 5 gallon bucket that has sort of become the location for wet stuff to get tossed in.
  17. Nice tanks! That first tank is actually perfect for a betta I like it. The main thing is it's a proper size. And the castle is cool. Welcome to the forum.
  18. I would try to make sure I'm not overfeeding and keep up with the gravel vac. The snail population will only be as large as there is a food source to support it. Then I'd manually remove any that are easy to get to. I love snails but unfortunately so does my Electric Blue Acara. He crunches ramshorns like Murphy going through a crab.
  19. Bare bottom is preferable in a QT as it's easier to clean. Also having a non-aquarium as the tank can actually be better simply because you won't risk it becoming another display tank thus losing the QT. MTS is real lol. I keep a small sponge filter running in my larger tank so that I can transfer it to the QT when I need to set it tup.
  20. Drag the photo in to the post to add it, or click the choose files link and browse to the photo and select it there.
  21. I have one of those lithium-ion packs that jump start car batteries. It has a usb port on it so in an outage I connect the nano air pump to it so my sponge filter is still going. Of course it won't last forever but so far it's worked well.
  22. I have dwarf neon rainbowfish and if I was to do it over again I'd honestly pick something else. Mine rarely school/shoal together, the big ones constantly harass the smaller ones who stay small because they don't get to eat as much as the largest ones who are hogs. Maybe it's just my particular fish but I just wanted to let you know I think you're right to avoid rainbows if a peaceful/relaxing fish to watch is what you're after.
  23. I've had 2 python water change systems. Both leaked profusely if I tried to use the stop valve so I could have time to walk from the faucet to the tank. Now I just use buckets. I don't really mind.
  24. Now we've gotten her so close to Washington she may as well visit the co-op 🙂
  25. I have eco-complete layered with fluval stratum. Honestly if I did it again I'd probably go dirted.
