Aquarium Co-op test strips vs API test kit question
Celly Rasbora replied to LoachTruther's topic in General Discussion
Coincidence! I just looked at the object I am working on, a digitized page out of a notebook from a 1920s era nursing student: "Litmus paper … If it turns paper blue alkali If it turns paper pink acid." Oh, if only the colors were that obvious! As Hobbit says, I struggle a lot with determining the right color, especially for the API nitrate test. I bought a container of Tetra test strips on Amazon, but I look forward to running out so I can justify buying Aquarium Co-Op's test strips.- 23 replies

@Beardedbillygoat1975I've been wondering why CPD are such a popular choice and if that is available at my local big box stores. (Oh how I wish I had a true LFS!!!)

Metaframe tanks generally have slate bottoms, which might explain why it is so inexpensive. There are knock-off brands, as well. So it’s possible it isn’t a true Metaframe.

That's malpractice! Edited to add: There's a huge difference between making a sale and making a customer. V. shortsighted.

I chopped off the two floating leaves of my banana plant and put them in my tub outside. They both have roots starting! Also bought some Azolla caroliniana, as I thought it is so pretty and also native. Also hornwort and dwarf sag for oxygen. It's still colder than I expected (zone 8 and wearing a sweatshirt today!?!), but the plants are thriving. I also have Bacopa caroliniana coming from Aquarium Co-Op. I am excited to be able to buy natives for my tub and also to be on this new adventure.

I was taught to use a lot of gravel for under gravel filter systems and sparse gravel with other methods of filtration. I have barely an inch of gravel in my tank, which makes planting a bit of a challenge. I like that I have more room for the fish, though.

Several General Tubbing Questions
Celly Rasbora replied to TheDukeAnumber1's topic in General Discussion
I decided to try a tub this year, inspired by all y’all. I bought a solar powered air pump on Amazon. So far so good. It has 20 hour battery storage and is highly rated. -
Air pumps that work both on AC AND battery?

If I were local, I’d pay in advance or get on a waiting list for some of Dean’s fish. Plus, having been featured on the yootoobles, the fish are celebrities.

What do you like to feed your nano fish?
Celly Rasbora replied to Jess's topic in General Discussion
Agree! -
Isn't that the rice fish Dean has in his tub outside? Pretty sure he sells them to Aquarium Co-Op, but you'd have to be local enough to go in person.

200 fish from wholesaler dead!
Celly Rasbora replied to CandyEllerKern's topic in General Discussion
What a nightmare! So sorry. -
They swell and lose the green color. I put some in my tank last night and am trying to keep this round buried. I don’t have deep substrate so it’s a challenge. I use rocks to cover them. Just used up my supply and need to buy more. Will get the bigger size this time.

How big is your banana plant!
Celly Rasbora replied to Casual aquatics's topic in Plants, Algae, and Fertilizers
I am trying this, although my leaf looks different from yours. I cut the stems back a couple of days ago and today, while cleaning up, I picked up the dried stems and didn't recognize them. Honestly, I thought they were broken rubber bands at first. But when I examined them, they were tough, like a fiber. Got me thinking what a person could do with something like that. Maybe make small baskets? Dunno. I'm not a crafter, by any means. But these stems are v. cool.- 11 replies

Did this thread inspire the latest blog article by Irene? I have to say, I do enjoy getting Aquarium Co-Op’s weekly email. I don’t have goldfish, but I still clicked to read the article. It had good information in it. I’d link to it, but I have run out of oomph for the day. I give my snails blanched kale and lettuce from my garden, mostly to keep them from chomping the plants. Frozen spinach is already cooked, so you could skip that step, perhaps. Irene’s article mentioned canned green beans too.

What would be the perfect North American tank?
Celly Rasbora replied to Kirsten's topic in General Discussion
I ran out of responses, otherwise, I would have ❤️ all of the responses. Thanks, @Fish Folk for sharing your rainbow tank. I LOVE it! I add dried oak leaves to my tank, too. I shop my yard for nano-tank sized leaves. 😄 My snails are devouring them, though. -
I’m glad you are being careful and hope you get vaccinated soon! I have appreciated all the content you have made while maskless, as it presents a sense of normalcy in abnormal times, but it has worried me at times.
