  1. Aw, @Eddie Dingle I didn't see what Anita was reacting to. What a sweet face! I had a special dog that I said good-bye to when he was 15. It's been eight years and I still miss my beamish boy. He was a rat terrier that denied his nature by being a water dog. Here's a video of us from 2010. He loved his water.
  2. Eleven made me go "Awwwwww!" and the pic of your total jerk cat made me LOL. He could be my cat's twin and I can relate. I'll look for a pic when I'm done working.
  3. Did you ask for the wholesaler's location? They could be from anywhere, not just California.
  4. In that al.com article I linked to, there's also a redspot darter (photo from the article shown below) that is gorgeous. I learned a lot from that article. I knew Alabama was incredibly biodiverse, but I was a bit shocked at the numbers of species it listed.
  5. Seeing the brilliant rasboras brought back happy memories. I had a mix of different rasboras in a 29 once upon a time. That particular one was included in my mix.
  6. My baby Ember tetra was struggling to get to the bottom of the tank yesterday, which is where he eats. I searched for info on here and elsewhere and didn't really get good information on what to do. I am assuming he has developed a swim bladder problem somehow. I put the little guy in two cups of tank water with a teaspoon of Epsom salt for twenty minutes. Does anyone have a definite ratio and protocol for such issues? I kept telling myself not to overreact, because it's possible to inadvertently do harm in "treating" a fish. I don't want to bludgeon this fish with care.
  7. I recently saw rainbow shiners for sale. It's native to Alabama and I think it would be cool to have a tank of them. I'd have to make a river tank, though, so it's probably not going to happen, unless I suddenly find room in my house for such a thing. It's a beautiful fish, though. I found this article with beautiful photography that features Alabama's most colorful fish (and other fanciful critters and flowers as big as dinner plates.) https://www.al.com/news/2016/05/in_the_land_of_tiny_technicolo.html
  8. It falls apart when touched? That is curiouser and curiouser.
  9. Welcome, @Eddie Dingle! That's another reason I've liked being on this forum, as time spent here is time not spent on toxic twitters. It's currently my only social media connection, other than this site, and twits encourage vitriol like nobody's bidness.
  10. Thankfully, I'm too lazy to be that reactionary. Bleach my tank? Uh, sounds like a lot of work … I'd prefer not to.
  11. It made me realize that mistakes are a part of the hobby and to go easy on myself. I've had a bad week because several fish and my tank were sick and I'm dosing with Ich-X and Maracyn. But, I am following ACO's recommendation and the tank, which had been cloudy, now looks AMAZING! My fish are begging for food, but because the water looks so much improved, I now have the fortitude to not feed them until day 7 of treatment. I think the fish might be hunting baby snails, which is also a win. Also, my baby ember tetra chased off a dominant male strawberry rasbora this a.m. and filled my heart with joy.
  12. In the Aquarium Co-Op email I received last night, it included a link to Cory's video that he made last month discussing the invasion of zebra mussels in marimo moss balls. I'd seen it before, but just yesterday, I watched another yootoobles creator advising a scorched earth approach (Bleach your tank, bleach the ball!). It scared the bejeebles out of me and made me feel irresponsible for allowing my recently purchased moss ball to exist. (I'd purchased one in January and was concerned it might have the evil critters in it.) So, I listened to Cory's video again. He advised to not put your tank water in the sewer, which I don't do, anyway, for two reasons. 1. Are my snails possibly unwanted in my state's waterways? 2. My tank water is awesome fertilizer for my plants and gardens. Why would I flush that resource down the drain??? So, I gave a sigh of relief and stopped the self-flagellation for which I excel. Thanks, Cory for this and for all you do for the hobby. It is refreshing in this day and age to see a business exercise good corporate citizenship and I will support your efforts because of it.
  13. Maybe embrace the tannins? A lot of fish love it. I'd be happy to have it, myself. I see anubias and java moss in that tank. You can grow old waiting for them to grow. ETA: invest in root tabs. The other plants will thrive.
  14. I bought way too much airline tubing before I discovered Aquarium Co-Op and I can't justify the purchase. I can see Dean in my mind's eye saying "food-grade PVC" and sucking on one end like a straw.
  15. I'm glad it told me what CPDs are. Google didn't help me one bit.
  16. So, I am not technically a nerm, because I'm not a member on yootoobles, but considering how excited I get when there's a new video … I'm pretty nermy.
  17. Can you ID where it is rotten? I would suggest cutting out the rotten spot, as it will continue to spread to healthy portions of the plant.
  18. If I didn't have microfauna, I would not still have an ember tetra fry in my tank. It isn't due to my feeding it, that's for sure. YaY for your critters!
