Welcome to the forum and back to the hobby!

Awesome @Daniel! You can integrate the lunar schedule on an outlet too: Set OFF If Moon 000/000 Then ON I have it with the Lunar Simulation Module, but any lights with the right color would work.

I am ready to make my confession. When I came back to the hobby, I researched for months before jumping in with an organic soil tank. I was trying to integrate all of the information I was absorbing. I knew the 1.5" max soil recommendation from Diana Walstad. I was also reading about people turbocharging things with CO2, etc. I thought, why not turbocharge the soil and go for like 2.5-3.0", and then cap it even more? I had a roller coaster figuring things out, with plants that were all new to me. I got things somewhat okay, and then DW came to the forum I was on, and I got to ask her opinion of my tank photos. She was very polite, and explained why my plants were not doing as well as they could be. The next day, I took on the messy job of thinning out my substrate and cap to more reasonable depths. This is why I try to describe my tanks as organic soil tanks, because my mistakes are on me. However, every mistake I made has been invaluable.

New fish for the week of 11/2-11/8

The fins on that beauty remind me of a Flame Scallop. Very cool. -
Looking good! Welcome to the forum. I like how you have a plan, even having a time-out tank ready.

I love watching this project! Perhaps it is like a compost pile, where the decomposition in the organic soil is generating heat.

I like a good trilogy. Well done!

@ange, I love how you used such a tall piece of Mopani wood to match the verticality of your tank!

Fluval Plant 3.0 Scheduling and Programming

@be28ans, You might be a bit overpowered with 100% peaks. I would scale down to 25-35% max. I would keep your blue in the low single-digits when you use it. The Nano is pretty powerful for its size. I see room for more plants! Enjoy. You might also want to consider trying the L bracket the opposite way, to give more height.- 360 replies

The filter came in, but I haven't tested it yet. It looks like it might fit a pair of Aquaclear 30 foam in there. It sits about 2" above the rim, and requires about 2" clearance behind it. The motor is permanently installed, but the impeller is accessible. It is indeed symmetrical. Here are some photos, with Co-Op Small Sponge for scale:

It looks deciduous, not coniferous.

Answer: Where beneficial bacteria comes from. (naturally)

I think my organic soil from the local composter comes in with beneficial bacteria. -
Cardinal Tetra Bioload....OVERLOAD???

You have covered your substrate in plants; I see filtration, lights, and plenty of room. Have fun!- 4 replies

Thanks. I did two squirts in that three gallon bucket, and I will keep my eye on it. I have already planned the next upgrade for that tank: darker curtains in the kitchen/dining room.

I am still struggling to get a good shot of my Killifish pair, and any shot of my SAE, but here are some photos from my 16 bow: I am trying out some Easy Carbon to treat this monster I pulled out: And unrelated, my Betta tonight, while I try to dodge the glare:

I saved the largest liners from my last order, and will be testing one with some carbon media in the turtle canister. I think I will be able to tie a knot in the end to close it off.

Because I plant very heavily, I actually see more of my shrimp (per-tank), in my smallest tanks. However the smallest tanks are the hardest to photograph the inhabitants.
-
You can run Neocaridina in tiny tanks and large tanks. It is fun to observe shrimp from multiple angles, so that might be something to think about for your tank choice.

I'm going to bring a heater to the turtle tank. I managed to find it on the first try. I had to go thru multiple drawers, boxes, and bins to find the matching suction cup. Totally nermal. -
Thanks for that information. As far as I know Sam is male. I'll check the light. I will also be bringing in another container of Duckweed, a handful of Salvinia, and some spare heaters that should be rugged-enough. Would you recommend any substrate for this particular tank? Do you have a lighting schedule recommendation? Should I add an activated carbon layer to the canister I installed? It currently has foam, bioballs, foam.
