  1. Something else that could be done to have a large water volume to help with water quality is to have the fry in say a 10 or 20 gallon tank and have that plumbed to a much larger tank or a rubbermaid tub as a sump with filtration material.
  2. I hate taping and mudding drywall as well. When I put an addition on my house, I wanted to hire someone to do it, but no one would just tape and mud, so I had to have them hang, tape and mud, which was fine with me, because I know they got it all done in one weekend where it would have taken me a lot longer to get it done.
  3. I run all sponge filters in my tanks in my fishroom, I do water changes once a week and when I'm doing those, I clean a portion of my filters, I will pull 6-8 sponges out of tanks and clean them. This way, each one gets cleaned about once a month.
  4. I have a group of them in my one tank and enjoy them. They do get a nice yellow color when they are well fed and happy.
  5. Guppy grass probably can, I think that stuff would survive the apocalypse.
  6. Most plants do not like salt. There are a few that can. The only one that I have experience with tolerating some salt is anubias barteri nana. It wasn't too bothered by the salt at 1 Tbsp per five gallons that I used. How coarse is the crushed shells substrate, and is it the only thing being used, or are you mixing it with something? Are you using it to buffer the water? I'm just asking because I haven't really seen anybody use a sole substrate of shells in a freshwater tank, except maybe an African cichlid tank to buffer the pH of the water.
  7. That's good to know, I've never kept the ropefish so wasn't sure what they can tolerate.
  8. No I have not made a quad one for 55. The racks that I have built I followed what several people I have seen do on YouTube, Ted's Fishroom and Dan's Fish, doing dado cuts in the uprights.
  9. Depending on your water parameters, Discus eggs generally won't hatch well unless they are in soft acidic water. Now, I know that the Stendker discus bred in Germany are raised and bred in harder water, so I've heard that you don't need the softer acidic water. I am not sure how true that is,, as I have never kept them. But, as @Danielstated, unless you start with a proven pair, it's best to buy a group, raise them, let them pair off. Condition them with live foods if possible, frozen foods, high quality pellets etc.
  10. Question is, did you wash the soup ladle and put back in kitchen before the lady of the house realized? LOL
  11. What substrate are you using? Most if not all of the aqua soil substrates such as ADA, stratum will relese ammonia for the first few weeks that they are used.
  12. I have hard water, 10-12dGH and higher at times and have no problem growing sword plants. As long as you feed them they will grow, lots of root tabs, sword plants are very heavy root feeders. I have a large one in my 93 cube that I put two root tabs under every two weeks when I do a water change. If I happen to go longer between changes, the leaves will start turning yellow and getting spots like the OP showed. I also have other sword plant varieties in other tanks that have aqua soils such as Fluval stratum and eco complete and I still add root tabs to help them. @Libby I would start by putting one more root tab under the plant than what you have been using and see what happens, mind you it will take a week or two or even longer before you might start to see any differences.
  13. A standard 75 gallon footprint is 48x18, 40 breeder is 36x18, 55 gallon is 48x12, so none have the same footprint. if your looking for something same footprint as 40 breeder but more gallons, a 65 is same but taller. Same with a 90 gallon being same footprint as 75 but taller
  14. I like this idea! I had a similar idea, but using the Rubbermaid or sterilite tubs that are made to slide under a bed. I think these would be better, thicker plastic than the others. I'm interested to see how it works out.
  15. The gladiator racks, you can put the shelves wherever you want when building, so you can make as much room above the tank as you want. You don't even need to use all four of the shelves if you don't have room or don't want to. Just an idea though, when I build racks out of 2x4 I plan on 8" of space from the top of tank to the bottom of the 2x4 above it, gives plenty of room to get my arm and nets in to catch fish, remove plants, decorations etc.
  16. If you look at different online fish sellers, you will find that almost every one will have different guidelines for acclimating their fish. When I get fish or anything, I acclimate the same way I always do, most sellers only offer a DOA policy anyways, nothing beyond that as far as staying alive for a week or whatever. If they do have something like that though, I would say to either follow their procedure or at least tell them that you did.
  17. In a 75 gallon, you could do a nice group of 6 discus easily. I generally say roughly 10 gallons per discus, so 6 would be good in there. I'm not sure if ropefish would be good tank mate or not, I've never kept them or read much about them. Can they tolerate the warmer water temps? Are the a messy fish that will cause water quality issues that might affect the discus? The tetras would be excellent tank mates for discus, I have kept cardinal and rummynose before with discus and not had issues.
  18. I would guess that they will become food for all the cichlids. You never know though, if the tank is planted heavy and there are enough places for the shrimp to hide you may be able to pull it off.
  19. A week is the minimum I would do. I don't use meds unless I have to, I observe. The times I use meds, if I see something that needs treated, if the fish are recent imports from wild. I mainly observe how the fish are behaving, if they're eating etc. If I have them in QT for a week, no signs of illness, and eating good, then they will be put into their new more permanent home.
  20. I like the nice bright red shrimp, like the Bloody Marys that I keep. I got some of the gold back yellows last fall and I am really liking the look of them.
  21. If you are wanting to breed the guppies and produce as much fry as possible, you'll want a bunch of plants that the babies can hide in to not be eater by the adults. Guppy grass is good, hornwort, anacharis, ludwigia. If you aren't worried about breeding and just want to keep the guppies in a nicely aquascaped tank, as mentioned above, anubias, java ferns, crypts are good.
  22. If youy cut the runners, the mother plant will send out more in whatever direction it wants, or even start to regrow the one you just cut. If you leave it intact, it will continue to keep growing in whatever direction you move it to.
  23. I trim all the leaves that are reaching to the surface, and only keep the leaves that are submerged.
  24. A lot of sump pumps come with a check valve installed or to install. It will keep the water that is in the piping from backflowing back into your sump crock when the pump shuts off. For example, mine in my basement has approximately 8 feet of 1.5" pvc pipe that is vertical, before going through the wall and outside. When the pump shuts off, all the water that is in at least the vertical part would backflow down into the sump crock, which would cause the pump to cycle on/off more frequently.
