Breeding Platinum Halfbeaks
TheSwissAquarist replied to AnimalNerd98's topic in Photos, Videos & Journals
Congrats on the fry! I was always under the impression that halfbeaks were the most infanticidic (is that a word?) parents going, next to swordtails. @AnimalNerd98 -
Hi all, if you’ve been following my journal you’ll have noticed that I’ve recently attempted to breed neon & glowlight tetras. However, I was unsuccessful in the first attempt, before the arrival of a bag of peat from my local gardening store. 😈 After I added a light dusting of peat to the bottom of the tank; I added a heater, craft mesh, and some live terrestrial moss collected from the woods near my house. I added a trio of 1M 2F (as far as I could tell) to the tank, and the morning after they spawned! I'd be really grateful if an experienced tetra breeder could chime in on how to feed them, seeing as I’m a complete newbie at this. 😅

Returning to serious fish nerding
TheSwissAquarist replied to 2GreenThumbs's topic in Introductions & Greetings
I think Apistos can hybridize between species, at least A. Cacatuoides and A. Agassizii can. Maybe try for a trio of agassizii, and maybe add some more further down the line? (If they breed, it saves you the trouble!) -

My glowlight tetras have spawned 🥳🥳🥳🥳! The eggs are sooo tiny. Better get some paracemium cultures… -
Look quite like Tubifex, but are probably detritus. Were you stirring the gravel up before you took that clip? Have you got any fish in that tank to eat them?

Returning to serious fish nerding

Welcome to the forum! I’d maybe try Apistogramma dwarf cichlids, seeing as you’ve got some seriously sweet strains over there in the states. Agassizii are my favorite; but everyone has their own tastes. 😉 -
Freshwater wholesale prices - new here!
TheSwissAquarist replied to Tesus's topic in General Discussion
I used to work for mine about a year or so ago, but the mark up was pretty similar, tho the prices have rocketed since your time @Andy's Fish Den! -

Maybe try emailing large aquarium brands like Juwel, Marina and Tetra and be upfront about what you’re asking. Politeness is key 😉. -

Popped over to a LFS to get an Assassin snail to deal with ramshorns. They’ve slashed the prices on a group of L134 Leopard frogs (It’s what they’re calling them, I think they’re a bit closer to L333 Queen Arabesque Pleco). 250 Swiss Franks is still a bit outta my price range - maybe the danios will help me get there. Speaking of danios… they’ve started on the BBS, and are as cute as ever. I’ve also added a bit of peat to the breeding tank, complete with some wild terrestrial moss from the woods behind my house. Mountain moss is nice and tufty and perfect for spawning. I’ve gorged my Glowlight tetras on BBS for the past couple of days, and have added 1M 2F to the tank. Stay tuned! Spare pic of my new desktop shrimp tank. Admittedly it’s not as cool as @wes.crocketts 3D printed deco tank, but it’s fun. 😊 Stay fishy Nerms! -
Mystery snail eggs & inverts journal
TheSwissAquarist replied to Chick-In-Of-TheSea's topic in Photos, Videos & Journals
Turning purple, still partly brown. I expect after a couple of weeks in your care they’ll turn pink 😅. Good news is that Switzerland is gonna unban most larger aquatic invertebrates, which means I can finally get my mitts on some mystery snails! First imports are probably gonna be pricey tho…- 1,895 replies

It may be like @Guppysnail said; they’re just a tad old. Maybe try getting a couple of younger females??

What Are Your Non-Fish Keeping Hobbies?
TheSwissAquarist replied to FLFishChik's topic in Off Topic General
Only if you indoctrinate them about the virtues of fish keeping 🤣. -
It is a really good idea. I wonder if you could make it out of craft mesh & a Tupperware? I’d be willing to try.

My chemistry teacher says she’s gonna take some, and I asked at an LFS yesterday and I expect that they’ll take the rest. I’ll probably keep 20 or so for my display. -
The T.Pustulatus Cross River puffer project

They do have some seriously fun looks, what with the head shape and side markings. Are they able to take anything else in the way of crustaceans/mollusks 🦞 like shrimp or clams?- 34 replies
