  1. I was able yesterday to get the first batch of fish my my newly cycled 55 gallon tank, and decided to get some Black Neon Tetras. The guy at the store was extra nice and gave me a few extra free to boot. The fish have adapted fine to the tank, everyone is eating and swimming around okay, and no changes in the water parameters, but I noticed something strange with three of the fish I got. They do not congregate with the rest of the Black Neons, and they look a little different. I was assuming they were juveniles because they are so small and they do not have the color of the adults. The trio of them are sticking together and really love to hang out by the plants. They are eating okay and are very spunky, so they don't look sick. I am suspecting they are young Emperor Tetras that I got by accident. I am not going to complain if so, but I am concerned that only three is not enough for them to be happy in the tank. How long can I wait till I can grab a few more to make them happy? I really want to clamp down on aggression issues, which now I may have. 😞 I took a couple pictures, but admittedly it was hard to get them with them zipping around so much.
  2. Hi all. Got two questions regarding compatibility. 1. I plan to transfer fish from the quarantine tank to the main, among them will be 8 Threadfin Rainbow (Iriatherina werneri). The main tank has 8 Emperor Tetras (Nematobrycon palmeri) and 14 White/Gold Cloud Mountain Minows (Tanichthys albonubes), 6 Corys and 3 - 4 Otos. All sources suggest to keep the Threadfins out but I have noticed that the fish don't go on the internet. So, am I looking for troubles? 2. I have fallen in love with shrimps, don't know why, but my wife and I found them interesting to watch. Currently we have 3 Amano Shrimps in a 8gl. tank. We would like to have Vampire Shrimps in the main tank. On top of the fish that have already been mentioned there will possibly be Bosemans (Melanotaenia boeseman) and Neon Rainbows (Melanotaenia praecox). One site that I have checked claimed that the rainbows will attack the shrimp, is it so? I have seen this shrimp at a size of ~ 3". Thank you for your advice.

    Eye injury?

I have a number of emperor tetras (didn’t know about territory/alpha male being an issue, I know..) and one of the males has an eye issue. It started out with a clear protrusion on one eye, and now looks like the attached picture. All other fish have no signs of illness. At first thought it might be an injury from the alpha male? Water parameters are 0 ammonia 0 nitrite, 40 nitrate, ph is 7.0.
  4. Why would a fish (Emperor tetra) be hanging out in the outflow current, riding the flow when it has a swim bladder problem? For a couple of months now he's been swimming around the tank like a kid learning to swim. you know, head up high and almost vertical. he's been doing alright but I didn't expect him to last this long. These last days though he hangs in one spot just riding the current. Why? he doesn't have to stay there. is he joyriding or suicidal? It's just odd to me.
  5. I started my aquarium since October. So far I always had a trail and error. First I had a 10 gallon aquarium. But because of the build of that aquarium the circulation was so bad my fish got ick all the time while my water was perfect. In that time I had 6 neon tetras and 5 super blue emperor tetras and they left my beta alone just fine. I now have put them into a new aquarium of 15 gallon but in the beginning I noticed they had not enough air. So I removed the lid and bought an air stone but it was to late for 3 blue emperor tetras and a neon. In these last few days I noticed my betta had huge fin tears. And now I saw the tetras nipping at them. My betta is just to nice to say to back off and I really don't know what to do anymore. Soon he will have no tail left and I was wondering what am I doing wrong? Any advice will help... I also don't know anyone who can take fish I have and store won't take Em back. I also spend so much money now that another aquarium can't help me now...
  6. Hello, I was hopeing someone could help me fine out how I can breed my emperor tetras. I have a 40g heavily planted. There is I think 4 males 4 females. I have been able the accidentally breed panda corys and reticulated hillstream loach but can not get my emperors to breed, it seams they like softer water, my water is very hard (well water) but I wpuld like to try and see if I can. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
