  1. Bought two assassin snails and some brine shrimp. Put snails in tank. Put Shrimp in tank. Watched in amazement as a snail caught and ate a brine shrimp!
  2. Great to see you here Maggie, from a fellow east coaster! I've got 6 cories in my 37 gallon, and will echo @Mridul Singh that you'll want at least 6 cories to get their personalities going. Other than that the plan sounds great!
  3. I went with a painted black background, but I don't have bettas either, so it's a moot point for me.
  4. I have had several bladder snails come in recently on some plants, and today went to my lfs and picked up a couple Assassin snails. We'll see what happens!
  5. The purpose of this thread is to celebrate each Wednesday with pictures of the wood in our tanks. We could also include discussions of driftwoods, I guess, like what kinds we like best and best uses. I have one tank with two measly pieces of driftwood. The bigger piece was sold as spiderwood, the smaller didn't have any name attached to it, it was just a piece of wood screwed to a piece of slate that caught my eye at my lfs. I will admit, the nighttime lighting from my NICREW RGB Plus made for some neat creepy photos! I know y'all have better pictures than ME! Let's see 'em!!!
  6. Bo, one of my two koi angelfish (the smaller of the two) seems to have decided he is the undisputed tank boss. I have found myself several times now scolding him for picking on his tankmates. He doesn't pick on Natty (the bigger angel) much, but seems to love speeding toward the Mollies and Swordtails to make them run away. I've got to make sure I keep an eye on the situation.
  7. Planted 4 new plants last week, 2 Anubius (nana and gold coin), a Windelov Java Fern, and a bundle of Dwarf sag. the Anubius look great, the Windelov scares me a little as it just doesn't look happy, but the Dwarf Sag is on fire! I have a couple runner shoots already, so I'm looking forward to a great little forest for some fry to hide in. I may even eventually feel comfortable putting some shrimp in there without worrying what my angels will do to them!
  8. I'm not entirely sure, but I'm pretty sure the snails will outlive us all. I think they're like twinkies, they'll even survive a nuclear blast! 😉 The question is, do you want them to survive. I'm considering an assassin snail soon to take care of my bladder snails.
  9. Greetings Maggie! Hope you find the board as helpful as I have. A 45 sounds great, I went with a 37 because my house is small, and I didn't entirely trust the floor support for a 45.
  10. I planted a variant of an Eastern Redbud in my front yard yesterday. I may have to try a few of those leaves when they fall and see what happens, although at this point I still don't have any shrimp. I think there's a pleco in there, but he's always in hiding!
  11. I've been thinking about adding a few shrimp to my tank, but am afraid the angelfish with think, "shrimp are food, not friends."
  12. This is a rookie question, but what effects do the leaves have on the tank? I saw someone mention the tannins, but I am finally getting less tannins from my driftwood now that I got Purigen and don't know if that's a plus or minus for me.
  13. I've thought about getting a small container of live bbs from my lfs to test with my tank (Angels, swordatils, mollies, cories, pleco) Is it worth the dollar or two they charge for the little cup with those fish??
  14. I don't use eco-complete, but as far as gluing onto rocks, it depends on the plant. If you're using a rhizome plant like java fern or anubius, they get attached to the rocks or driftwood, as they are happier there than in the substrate. I used superglue gel on mine, some use string or fishing line. It all depends on what kind of plant we're talking about here.
  15. I was thinking it was like toilets, and they swirl opposite in the southern hemisphere 😉
  16. During my daily status update, noticed a runner peeking up through the sand a few inches away from the dwarf sag I planted Monday! It appears something can grow in that box!
  17. I would never have thought to put local leaves in the tank. I'd be too afraid of adverse reactions!
  18. I never realized you could id a snail by which way his shell is on! Figured it was a personal preference type thing haha.
  19. They are all tiny in mine, but growing relatively quick. I've removed a few during water changes, but I'm not overly concerned about them quite yet.
  20. I'm not sure, but I'm looking forward to the answer. There's 5 or 6 of them in my tank!
  21. Welcome to the forum, Garren! The tank looks great! It took me a minute to realize they were the same tank.
  22. Sounds good! I've thought about dabbling with live brine, but not sure I can manage. It scares me, I guess.
  23. Tank looks great. Do you have plans for fishy friends?
