  1. I have ventured into the world of (slightly) larger African cichlids. With my water hardness and the ph of my buffered tank, it only seemed right. For dither, I have a small school of 6 African Red-Eye tetras, which are visible in some of the following pictures. I then got three cichlids, which is where the wisdom of the forum comes in. One of the cichlids, my favorite of them at this point actually, was bought from a tank that was listed as "Peacocks." He has a really cool striping of red, white, and blue at the tip of his upper fin. Now that I've looked around, I starting to think he may be a hap instead. The other two were bought from an "Assorted African cichlid" tank, one of which I believe I identified as another hap (the red and yellow with the bold lines), but I'm not sure on the blue. At this point they are all happily coexisting, but I was hoping the forum may have the id of all three, just so I know and can dig in a little more on the research.
  2. It's like the old saying, my biggest fear is that when I die my family will sell my instruments (or in this case aquariums) for as much as I told them I paid for them!
  3. So I ran a test on another tank which is unbuffered, as well as tap water straight. Neither have any chlorine, which I found interesting. The tap water is slightly less hard, but still over 150, and the alkalinity of the other tank (My heavily planted angel tank) is near 0, while straight tap is hovering around 80. Both samples look to run between 6.8 and 7.2 for ph. I think part of the decision I have to make is if I want to break this tank down completely and remove the aragonite, or leave that in for my new plans.
  4. OK, on further investigation I am thinking incorrectly. My pH in the tank in question is actually quite alkaline, at about 8.2. I will note that, because this was my multi tank, the substrate is crushed aragonite, so that buffers it heavily. According to my test strips, my gh is at or above 300, with kh between 120 and 180. I think what has happened twice now to my multis is that my tap water is acidic, and when I do a water change there seems to be too much of a swing for them before the aragonite does it's deal. I have been looking at kribs for some time as a possibility if I ever had a meltdown, so I may look deeper into them if I can rectify my ph situation.
  5. After a second failure in my shell dweller tank, I've decided to rethink the stocking and design. I have quite acidic water, so I began looking at some stocking ideas for that. However, I've noticed that general stocking specifies acidic, soft water, and mine seems to be acidic and ROCK HARD! I don't have specific numbers this morning, but can get them if someone has some ideas and needs specifics. With the general info, does anyone happen to have some stocking suggestions that may be able to work in my wonky water?
  6. @Fish Folk I'm over in Baltimore. Frederick isn't too far, although I have some unpleasant history there. Long story.
  7. There's a cover by the Petersens that is pretty good too.
  8. My musical tastes run the gamut, depending on my mood. There are days I listen to nothing but classical. Other days, I listen to life metal (Christian Death Metal...think DEMON HUNTER). The more important thing to me, when the music has words, is the message. I've learned I need to be very selective what I let in my ear gates. I have not made it 14 years without a drink listening to the same songs I used to perform at the bars! For the most part, whether it's bluegrass, Adult Contemporary, Southern gospel or Gospel gospel (or podcasts for that matter), the Christian message is usually coming through my speakers.
  9. My office is sadly in the center of the building, with no windows for miles and miles. As far as my lighting schedule, it's the preset in the hygger 24/7, which comes on very dim red at about 6am, slowly increases until full light around noon, then decreases again to a dim blue and finally off at around 10p. It may be that I need to stop using that and just use a timer to turn on and off at full power, but I was thinking this would help my other plants.
  10. I need help! I have a 6 gallon cube, unheated, which at the moment is housing 4 golden white cloud minnows. Filtration is through a Co-op sponge fillter, with dwarf hairgrass, java moss, and "japan" also from the coop. The bottom and sides, along with the filter, have been taken over by a coating of green hair algae. I've pulled some out manually, and cleaned the sponge, but every time I try to pull more off the bottom it uproots the hairgrass and lifts the java moss square from it's place. What can I do to get it gone??? With the plants I have in there, they like heavy light, so I have a 24/7 hygger to try and keep them happy. I'd appreciate any thoughts and suggestions the wiser fishkeepers may have!
  11. Wouldn't it be great if Nerites were like Endlers, and pet stores only sold the males?!
  12. I understand completely! I can't read Australian authors, because in my mind I need to read with the correct accent and my Australian accent is way off, so I get frustrated. Maybe I need some mental help for that one! 😉
  13. Yeah, @Streetwise, that's it. Couldn't remember the first part. Thanks!
  14. Safelite repair, safelite replace? I should apologize, between the weather and covid I've been at work nearly 24 hours straight. Maybe I'm too punchdrunk to be posting.
  15. Looks like you may have to buy a co-op order, get a nice Murphy sticker, and plaster that sucker right over that thing! 😉
  16. I like the look! It should really fill out and go nice and all jungley!
  17. So I have a 6.5 gallon cube with some golden white clouds in my office at work. I decided to get several varieties of ground cover, so I bought some java moss for one corner, dwarf hairgrass for toward the back, and some "Japan" for another corner. I was looking forward to seeing the Japan spread horizontally like the description says. So far, it seems to be growing up more than out. Am I doing something wrong, or will it collapse on itself once it gets bigger or something?
  18. Anyone else thirsty this morning for a big cup o' Joe?
  19. Wooohooo! Way to go! Enjoy! I know my fishy friends still go gonzo over my care package.
  20. Bought 4 multies from my favorite LFS Sunday... Found tiny fry in the tank Tuesday night. May have been the 2 that were already in there, but either way!
  21. Hit my local lfs for some shellies. Mentioned my dieoff faux pas to the owner, and she looked at me crazy and said, why go through all that with the ph? These fish were all born and raised in this tank, and our ph hovers around 7. They are very forgiving and adaptable as long as it stays pretty steady. Lesson learned.
  22. Thanks all! I will likely wait until some of my ACO plants to fill in before the purchase. (I have some "Japan" in there, along with dwarf hairgrass, a patch of java moss, and a sprig of water sprite. I'll be sure to send along pics once it gets back to full order.
  23. A while back, I got some neocaridina shrimp from Aquahuna. After some issues and a tank change, there is one black shrimp who remains. He is in a tank with my white clouds, which is not heated. I've seen on some sites that the neos enjoy colder temps and are therefore good mates for the WCMM. Then I found a different site that says they are not good tankmates, as the white clouds will eat the neos. I wanted to ask the peanut gallery for their experience before spending the money on another 10 neos from Aquahuna. Thanks!
  24. Just for some follow-up, I just got home from work, and it looks like the two remaining adults are doing well. I haven't fed them yet, but two multies and the pleco are all active. I don't see any of the fry, but I may be missing them, so we'll see. It does seem like a male and female remain so who knows what's coming! I will probably look to get four more once I'm sure everything is ok. I will note the evening test shows the pH back up above 8.4.
