  1. He said they were all males, so if they start breeding, he may be able to make enough money from the news spots to buy a new tank. 😉
  2. A lot of people say a lot of things. I am not saying I 100% think the idea is great, but I also am not going to say you are a horrible person. One thing I note is that I personally wouldn't wipe the algae... that's why God made the Nerites! If they are getting along, and your numbers are adding up, it works.
  3. Hey Connor! At the very least you will need to keep a very close eye on tank maintenance and water changes. I could also see the betta getting territorial with so many close friends, and having some aggression problems. How many hiding places do you have? Is it a planted tank? How bout some pictures, friend!
  4. I found out yesterday I will be on quarantine over the holidays, so I will not be able to spend Christmas with my family. I plan to spend quite a bit of time staring at and talking with all my fishy friends!
  5. I just got stupid happy to see someone still posting for wooded Wednesday. I posted pics of my office tank in other threads, but hadn't come back here. Here's a photo of the wood in that tank, complete with some small white dots which are also on the leaves in the tank, and even one or two on the acrylic, as well as my photobombing little betta. If you pay special attention, you may even spot one of the Nerites and some Neocaridinias.
  6. Alright, it's been a while since my last update. Today, I removed the strange hang over the water filter that came with the tank, and in went a Co-op sponge filter connected to a tetra air pump. I am probably going to switch out the air pump at some point, as it is not adjustable and the airflow is pretty daunting! Also, I have started several new projects in this tank over the past two weeks. The ghost shrimp seemed to be doing well, so I was able to procure 10 assorted neocaridinas that went in last week, and seem to be doing well (At least, when I can find the tiny little suckers!) Several of them like to stand on the top of the lava rock, doing a little dance, until the fish swims by and they scatter. Today, I added several Malaysian Trumpet snails to the tank as well. While some may look at this decision in confusion, my overall plan is to use this tank as a breeding ground for them, and then take them to my home tank so the Assassins get some food! The plants look as if they are starting to take root well, with some possible growth coming out of the Swords and at least one new sprout in the Dwarf Sag.
  7. Yesterday, I visited my local LFS in hopes of solving several issues that have arisen with my home tank. After a few month, it is apparent that all of the bladder snails have been feasted upon, leaving my assassins looking a bit hungry. Also, there is some growing issue with basic algae on some of the glass and driftwood. Nothing serious, mind you, but I was wondering what could work. I read several places that large Inca snails should be alright, as they are larger than the assassins. I picked up two of them, and as of this morning before leaving for work, they were still in the tank and doing well. While I was at the store, however, I also saw an unmarked tank with some Malaysian Trumpet Snails crawling around. At what I thought was a very nice price, they sold me 5 of these pests. I placed them in my office tank today, with hopes they will begin to reproduce, giving me some fodder for the assassins.
  8. Wow, I have never aged water, pumping directly through a python-type homemade device. I always heard the chlorine side of aging, and use Seachem prime so I've never thought anything of it. I never even considered the gaseous side of the argument! Ive never seen any noticeable stress, though, so I don't know.
  9. I personally pair a coarser sponge like the Co-op sponge with poly-fill I bought from Walmart, since it's a fraction of the cost of the exact same bag of filter floss at my LFS.
  10. @Cory, I was showing a co-worker Murphy and singing the praises of the Co-Op. He was quick to point out that y'all are based right where "a lot of the bigfoots live." He wanted to know how many times you've seen Sasquatch, or how many times he's been to the store.
  11. Hopefully someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but the water changes shouldn't make a difference in decreasing water changes. The plants will feed off the ammonia, nitrates and nitrites, but fresh water doesn't add to those. EasyGreen says it should be used weekly for water column nutrients, but there, to my knowledge, would not be a nutrient deficiency caused by not changing water.
  12. I will preface this post saying very clearly that I'm not a geneticist, or any type of scientist really. I would imagine the size of a fish is a result of the genes, which may very well at times be a recessive trait. That being said, possibly the mixing of two breeds turns this into an active trait, thereby making the offspring bigger. I don't know how specifically bred the two species are, but maybe they are "supposed" to be a bit bigger in the first place? It is an interesting thought/question. My guess would also be that it is more of an unexpected accident than a purposeful move, although a master breeder like @Dean’s Fishroom might do it on purpose.
  13. It is moments like this I wish I had more money!
  14. I almost hit the laugh icon, but thought it inappropriate as we talk of a funeral. Granted, I did call my younger brother Jimmy throughout my grandfather's funeral! (After Jimmy Dean... his jacket was WAY too tight, it made him look like a sausage.)
  15. I effectively roped in a new fishkeeper! I was training a new hire the other day, and showed her my office tank and pictures of my home tank. She emailed me today to tell me she is cycling her brand new ten gallon!
  16. When I put spiderwood in my tank, this formed, but only on the wood. The discussion back then was that it is some type of biofilm which is not harmful, and goes away within a week or so. Not sure what to make of it on the glass and not the wood, but I would imagine it's not harmful.
  17. Found a new fish store close to my house!!! Pretty nice place, too! They had a new kind of corner sponge type filter I haven't seen yet, so I'll be saving up for that now!
  18. I can't remember where now, but I do remember seeing a DIY video on youtube for make your own canister filter from a 5 gallon bucket.
  19. I welcome anyone correcting me if this is incorrect, but I don't believe that will overdose the fish as far as prime is concerned. I'm not sure if the prime will have any negative effects on the effectiveness of the med trio, but I'm sure someone on here will!
  20. That's priceless! I don't have a smartphone, so I can't have that problem.
  21. Saw something this evening that other people will likely be like, "Yeah, and?" but for me it was wild. I gave elpy some freeze dried mysis today, and as he was cruising the top feasting, 3 out of my 5 ghost shrimp swam themselves up the the top and were feasting on it while doing the backstroke. It was impressive to see what they could do!
  22. I urge self-isolation, and ask them all to stay six fins apart from each other, but you know how that is! It's difficult, I can't seem to find masks in their size! 😉
