  1. Caught another multi, which I believe is one of my females, playing hide and seek in a different hole in the battleship. I've been troubled that they don't seem to like the shells, and hang out more in the ship, but I also realized the tank they were raised in at the shop had no shells, only decorations, so the four I have likely don't understand the concept of shells. The new breed, when they come, will hopefully catch the drift. Watching for a month or so to decide if I need more or if these four will produce fry. Also thought some more today about if I want any tank mates for these multis, and what that could look like. I know the top two thirds of the tank could use some loving, and some Cyprichromis Leptasoma may look pretty cool up there!
  2. With 4 shell dwellers still swimming in the box, decided to offer up some frozen fare. They seemed to enjoy the blend of bloodworms, mysis, and brine. Also picked up some bugbites cichlid that will go into rotation tomorrow morning.
  3. The one in the battleship was the largest in the sale tank, so I figure he's a he. The three smaller ones seemed to head straight for the shells, and since they're smaller I hope they will be cooking up fries before long!
  4. Yesterday, I visited a local LFS, to ask about shell dwellers and the possibility of them buying some of them off me when the need arose. They declined the opportunity to buy, stating they were not a frequent seller, although they always have them in stock. Apparently, they received 5 by accident several years ago, and have kept a breeding colony going with the same line since then. I ended up taking 4 home. My hope is a male and 3 females, although it may be two males two females. Going to wait a while and see if I get any babies, then decide if I'll buy more or not.
  5. Scored my new 30 gallon. This was before I rinsed the Aragonite, set the aragonite, filled the tank, got the filter and heater running, and scattered escargot shells and a random sunken battleship that came with the aquarium. Even after rinsing, the water still clouded up some from the Aragonite, and I forgot to grab the cover as we were leaving my friend's house, so I'll slap some more pictures up when the setup is more presentable. Also made contact with a multi dealer on Aquabid to get some information on his stock.
  6. Thanks for all the info, folks! @Manny, I'm in Maryland, just outside Baltimore. I have two LFS near me, and plan to check them, likely next week, to explore. The tank was brought and set up today, so it needs some time to get into the groove anyway. Last time I was in one of them they didn't have shellies, but they may by now. @tolstoy21, I actually am in contact with a guy with great reviews on Aquabid, but he may sell out before I'm quite ready for them, so I'm planning to keep an eye out.
  7. I had the same issue in my 37 gallon with nearly identical stocking. My two koi angelfish played nice, then one began laying eggs. After 3 rounds of laying, with no viable eggs, one sadly killed the other. Now she just floats around looking lonely. I like to think she regrets her behavior, and wishes she had her playmate back.
  8. So I was able to get my 30 gallon for free. I was able to get Aragonite to get my water to mimic Tanganika. I was able to get 25 or so Apple Snail Shells. Now, I'm having crazy trouble finding multies or similis, really any shell dweller. Grrr. Suggestions? Even the online sources seem to all be sold out. I see some things on Aquabid, but I've never shopped on there, and it just has me nervous, I guess. My original plan was multies, possible with a couple Brichardi up higher in a slate rock formation.
  9. I may be overthinking this, but if the power goes out, would the wifi plug be able to accept a signal? Wouldn't the power be out to that as well? Maybe I'm misunderstanding the question.
  10. I stand corrected. Thanks for setting me straight, @Atitagain. I may end up working a pea puffer into my recently vacated 6.5, so this will be helpful info.
  11. I could be wrong, but I think any shrimp in with a pea puffer would likely end up being very pricey pea puffer food. Although, I think snails are ok with pea puffers, so now I'm second guessing myself.
  12. Sounds like what you really need are some ACO hand towels to help with the mopping! Then you could wring them out on the plants in the house for that extra nitrate boost.
  13. Hey @Clovis, I like the look of your tank as it is, personally. I will say I've had some very good results with Dwarf Sagitarius, which has sent runners and carpeted all of my tanks well. In one of my newer tanks, I'm playing around with some baby tears to see how they do. If they work, I think they'll be great in that tank, but I know they like Co2 diffusers, which I don't have, so I'll have to see how they do. All in all, you could try the dwarf sag, but I think your tank is looking great as is.
  14. Today I had a total change of plans day. I mentioned setting up the new ten gallon as a breeding project, and a friend I was talking to said, "You should have told me you were looking for a tank. I'm trying to find someone to give my 30 gallon and the stand it's on to." Full stop. A picture and some measurements later, we were making plans to bring his 30 gallon to my house sometime in the near future, which I will use as my office backdrop and the breeding project. (Still looking at shell dwellers. Tried to check a few stores for them today, just the big boxes, not planning to find anything. I got extremely frustrated at the tag "Assorted African Cichlids." Some of them looked like neolamps, but I couldn't be sure. Anyway, I digress. So then I had the new ten gallon to find a use for. Enter my 6.5 gallon southeast Asia biome, home to my kuhlis and Steve the betta. They are now enjoying a larger home. I'll add pics in a while, maybe a day or two, once they get comfortable and come out of their hiding places.
  15. Within about twenty minutes of my house, I know of two local LFS. I plan, before I start the project, to stop by both of them to ask about their local purchasing policy. I will let them both know what I plan to be breeding, and see if either or both would be willing to buy them from me, or even simply take them when it begins to overcrowd. (I would leave this option out until the tell me a firm no on buying the offspring!) I don't know enough about Aquabid to feel comfortable buying off there, much less selling.
  16. Thanks, @Cory! One other question... my plan is an aquarium coop sponge filter. Good choice, or should I go with something else?
  17. Where does one find a starter culture of Vinegar eels? I have two LFS near me, but have never seen anything. Granted, I never asked.
  18. I am hoping that my new 10 gallon tank is going to turn into a new breeding project, either for multies or similis. I naturally have pretty hard water, although it is also fairly acidic. My plan at this point was to use Aragonite for the substrate, and seachem's Lake T buffer to get the ph up where it needs to be. Is this acceptable? Is there any problem with using the Aragonite with the shell dwellers? I have no problem getting yelled at before I start so I don't have a miserable failure after things get going. Thanks!
  19. Hey, humans can't take up all the freezer space!
  20. I've never attempted raising my own live food except bbs. For EE's sake as well as my own, what is a good live to break into, and how?
  21. I only feed bbs as live foods for all my fish, but I've seen some people have success with daphnia, maybe? I do freeze dried daphnia and mysis shrimp at times.
  22. Welcome back, MsLinda! It's like riding a bike... although I don't know that I remember how to do that either, so... bad example maybe.
  23. Put together an inexpensive stand for my new zoom meeting backdrop. It will slowly come together over the next few months. I think my choices are this point are Endlers, multis or similis, or longfin white clouds. Either way, I'm thinking of the possibility of breeding, so part of my decision will be if any lfs near me is willing to buy. If they say they'd buy white clouds, I pick white clouds. Same with endlers or multis. White Clouds are in the lead for now anyway, just because they will be cheaper without the heater. On the other hand, shell dwellers would save money on not planting the tank. So many options, so few gallons.
  24. Fell victim to a box store's half off sale. I am now the proud owner of yet another 10 gallon. This one will likely need to go in the home office. I'm thinking either sparkling gourami, galaxy raspboras, a combination of the two, or something entirely different. I also considered some shell dwellers just to experience them. Thoughts?
  25. Way to go, you three! I regret that I'm not able to participate much any more, due to my new work schedule and lack of knowledgeable information to add, but I hope to remedy at least the work load part soon!
