    Yeah I planted mine further into the water column than your picture shows - I wanted to make sure the roots could easily find the substrate. Most important that the leaves stay out of water..

CPD's are one of my all time favorite nano fish (unlike @Irene says in her video LOL) , never had any breed in my care though. Super interested to see if you have better luck! Jimmy refers to their circular flaring behavior as 'sparring'. But I've never had any real aggression issues. The tanks I've had them in were extremely heavily planted though.. I wish you all the luck 🙂

    I think less than 1ppm? Could be wrong. But also the plants will take up the phosphates. It's not a parameter I ever consider unless I set up a new tank because it causes diatom algae.. which eventually subsides as the algae takes up mostly all the phosphates. The algae dies off and then I rely on my plants for the rest. If I were in your shoes, I'd just cut back on ferts for a couple weeks and see if that makes a difference

    I feel like one per plant is good. Liquid ferts, also very good. If crypts show signs of deficiency down the road - more root tabs

    How stocked are you? Otocinclus, Nerite snails for GSA, Amano shrimp.. tons of options. Easy carbon or hydrogen peroxide works well to spot treat hair algae. Critters always seem to love the algae more when it's dead/dying.

    That's exactly what we use to hatch bbs! Seems to work quite well, same process. 2 tablespoons, 2 liters of water.

    I have the same exact experience with my aquaclears and fiddling with the impeller always seems to get it running again.. the impeller is under a gray plastic piece which the tube feeds into. under this piece

    My guess would be that it's a nutrient issue.. Swords are quite heavy feeders and yours may benefit from additional root tabs. You didn't mention how much easy green you are dosing - maybe try increasing it to see if that helps the sword bounce back? I shoot for somewhere around 20-25 ppm of nitrates from dosing ferts and test every week or so. That's what I would do anyways. :) Your second question is complex and can have many answers. I personally find that dialing in your tank basically what everyone refers to as a 'balanced' aquarium means having a consistently running ecosystem with minimal issues/change over time. Like, it takes some trial and error to figure out exactly how much light, ferts, water changes etc are needed for your specific aquarium to require minimal maintenance and have healthy fish and plant growth all at the same time. For example, I find that keeping my lights on for 6 hours per day, dosing exactly one pump of Easy Green, one of Easy Iron and doing weekly 30% water changes balances out my 5 gallon nano tank perfectly. The plants are healthy, fish is very healthy and I have almost zero algae. That's how I interpret that phrase when I hear it.

    Yes! There it is! I should have known it would be on Thingiverse. 😅 I'd love to get my hands on one of these. It would make water changes on aquascapes a cinch. And a more reasonable size than the kitchen colander I'd been using. Just need to find someone with a 3D printer...

    @Dean’s Fishroomhas this reallyyyy cool 3D printed device that sits at the end of a hose for filling up tanks and it dispurses water around so you don't disturb your plants/substrate. It worked super well when we filled up an aquascaped 75 gallon on Sunday! Nothing floated or got uprooted during fill up. Looks sorta like this :

    Ohh I second that - we have a small school of strawberry rasboras at home in a 'zen' tank and they're super chill too. I'm also a huge fan of Pseudomugil rainbows, they seem very laid back, they love heavily planted tanks and they are beautifullllll

    So neat!! Your photos are beautiful. We got some Jungle Val in the other day that had the longest flower stem I've ever seen. Trimmed it off at about 3 feet. 😂 Val is such an interesting plant.

    Hey @Bekah! We're originally from the Akron area 🙂 welcome to the hobby! My favorite store in the area is called Agnoquatics in Broadview Heights. They're super nice people, good selection of fish and plants. There's Something Fishy on Broadview Rd in Cleveland. Good selection of hardscape at that store and decent fish as well. Our other go-to store is called RMS aquaculture also in Cleveland. You may have heard of that one. It's the biggest- more closely related to a big box store like petco, but with a really wide selection of tanks/heaters/lights etc. Their fish are often in questionable health though, so I personally haven't gotten fish from there. Just dry goods. Hopefully you can check these places out sometime! They're all quite unique to each other.

    Haha! Yes! Me too, I had this beast once. I didn't measure him, but my guess is that the leaf above his head is about an inch wide. He was a great subject for photography 🙂 Love my ramshorns 💚

    Oh yeah, I'm a big fan of 'hills' and sloped substrate as well. I do it in all my scapes as I feel it adds depth to the aquarium visually. I think I've been told the reason aquascapers use volcanic rock specifically is because it is quite porous, it doesn't allow as much anaerobic bacteria to build up beneath the surface of the substrate. It's not necessarily a bad thing to have anaerobic bacteria if the substrate remains undisturbed, but it can be problematic if the gases from the bacteria escape into the water column. Lava rock allows oxygen to flow a bit more freely and adds some minerals for the plants. However, there are no rules. I just use inert gravel to create slopes simply because it's cheaper than using all aquasoil. For a big tank, eco complete or fluval stratum can really add up! Like Candi mentioned, aquasoil will also begin to break down after awhile (years), whereas gravel or volcanic rock will not. So it holds its shape a bit better long term.
