  1. Yeah I would do the same, option 2 sounds ideal! Getting the 40 a stand sounds nice too. I always prefer a stand to a table.. Either way this is a win if she wants you to get a 40 breeder and you only have to sacrifice a smaller tank Lol. Plus a saltwater mantis tank sounds EPIC. Those critters are super cool and weird. Please show us when it's completed 🙂
  2. Rim? no rim? Fluval is usually my preference and would be great for a taller tank. They're very bright for your chosen plants and super easy to program. The Fluval 3.0 comes in a nano version too which is awesome. 🙂 https://www.aquariumcoop.com/collections/lights/products/fluval-plant-3-0-led-nano
  3. Greetings from North of Seattle!! Welcome to the forum - I love your tank and set up. The plants look great and I can relate about the monstera situation lol those can be finicky. Cool riparium too, the natural way to lower nitrates! Hope to see you around soon, I'd love to see more of your tanks 🙂
  4. @JaredL Sorry to hear about your betta 😞 the swelling appears to be an internal lump, personally not something I would treat with meds... especially if the trio has already been run. I wish the best for the little guy. Keeping his water as clean as possible and minimizing stress would be the actions I would take.
  5. Spooky! I don't think shrimp eggs would survive that long away from the mother? I've not heard of it anyways. Is it possible you're looking at scuds or something similar?? They are crustaceans with similar antennae and shape to shrimp but way smaller. idk I've always got some kind of uninvited underwater critters in at least one of my tanks, I would not be shocked if scuds showed up one day too. Cory loves em! 😂
  6. Don't worry though, the little capsules won't hurt them. I think Cory referred to them as being similar to dissolving pill capsules that humans take. Should be harmless. I loled at you calling them dumb though hahaha mine are ridiculously derpy too 😂
  7. Yeah I just love watching this, lovely post - Comes from leaves that have a slight bit of damage too. Or like right after a trim. Oxygen from inside the cells of the plant are released. So fun to watch 🥰
  8. Sweet! In my experience, getting val to take over is as simple as sticking it in there and giving it water and substrate. It's a total weed 😂. It'll spread with runner plants across your substrate until it has no room left. I would recommend giving it plenty of nutrients to achieve this, root tabs and liquid fertilizer, and enough light to balance ferts out so you don't get tons of algae. At least medium light would be ideal. One thing I would not recommend is using Easy Carbon or other products labeled as 'liquid Co2' regularly. It can kill val or otherwise damage growth over time. Awesome idea, I used to have a val jungle and I miss it. The fish really seem to love all the hiding spots too. Best of luck!!
  9. Prob let the plants grow and see if you get any pest snails to help your cycle along as well as add your mystery snails. Their bioload should be at least equal the bioload of the shrimp. I almost always use snails when cycling, they're just so tough. Maybe consider testing the water after a couple weeks to see if your ammonia remains at zero. Shrimp do seem to do well in established tanks, but what fish/invert wouldn't? lol. The Caridina species I've always heard is much more sensitive than Neocaridina - which cherry shrimp fall under. In fact Jimmy brought home cherry shrimp a couple months ago from the Co-Op and stuck em in a brand new 3 gallon tank right away and they've since quadrupled their population. I think it also depends on source of the shrimp.
  10. Have you tried lowering your lights and/or increasing your CO2? You mentioned heavy on the fertilizers, but how heavy? If adjusting ferts and doing more water changes didn't work, why not play with the other variables left in the equation You could even add Easy Carbon or spot dose with hydrogen peroxide to get rid of algae in there currently, but that will take time and I don't prefer the chemical route. Even in high tech setups with perfect plant growth, it's near impossible to keep 100% of the algae away without help from an algae eating crew. Some nerite snails or true Amano shrimp. Or some algae-eating fish if your tank is big enough.
  11. Looks like a stem plant.. Much like pearl weed because of the elongated leaves. Definitely not duckweed. Whatever it is, it likes the light up there I'm sure 🙂
  12. Yay! @angeso glad you received it and you're enjoying your new goodies! I'm curious to know how modifying the towel for a carabiner goes 🙂 I'd like to do that to mine too lol have fun and happy birthday!
  13. Oh yeah. This same thing happened to me at my old office job back in March when we shut down for quarantine. I had a tank there as well - I did what Streetwise suggested and just drained the water, took everyone home in a bucket, strapped the tank in on my front seat. Then filled it back up again and added the fish back in. Don't necessarily need to break the entire thing down to the bones if you've got a good cycle going and it's been established for some time. Just so many unknowns with covid and the current state of things. I live by the phrase, better safe than sorry lol
  14. Omg happy almost birthday!! I'm working on setting up the orders currently, so hopefully it'll get there in plenty of time for your day 😍

  16. Welcome, @Mel! I also live in Washington state 🙂 Just wanted to say Curzon is soo beautiful, I'm a big fan of the black/blue combo. Best of luck with the new plants and with breeding. Can't wait to see you around!
  17. Omg diatom algae is the worst - fortunately it doesn't last forever. I always wipe it off plant leaves if I can, the algae blocks the plant cells from light and therefore they usually can't photosynthesize as efficiently. Probably not a huge deal if your shrimp and snails are working hard at it, but for me, I just like to do it as a little boost in cleanup. Plus it's pretty satisfying rubbing the algae off lol
  18. Oh man, that's a strong snail. I figure mine crawl out because I have some open top tanks. But, good idea with the tums, I hadn't heard of that before! I'm sure that would add lots of calcium to the water to strengthen the shell. And hey, he won't get heartburn either LOL
  19. Agree, I'd love to see the Georgia Aquarium too someday. My top two favorites are the Shedd Aquarium and Monterey Bay in California. Really love seeing the sea otters at Monterey Bay and I appreciate their ocean conservation efforts. 👍🏻
  20. What an adventure he had! My nerites do this very occasionally. Always gives me a small panic attack too 😅😅 Then they just keep on trucking like it never happened! Gotta love snails lol
  21. YA'LL. @TheDukeAnumber1is a 3D printing wizard. Seriously cannot thank you enough for this! Super convenient water displacement device for fill ups. I can now comfortably walk away from the tank while it's filling and not worry about the flow blowing my plants away. Highly recommend!! Btw, love that the color looks gold. Betta was skeptical..... During filling.. water flows through it and up Finished!! Crystal clear 🙂
  22. oh! Cory just did a video for this exact purpose haha https://youtu.be/DLJtTl_IJSk. I'm a massive fan of clown killis because they're super fun to watch and I think they're really cute - but depends what you're looking for. They're real easy to keep, don't need a heater. You'll need a lid for that tank for sure though!
  23. Maybe Monte Carlo or microsword would be a good choice if the tank is on the smaller side? Those two would want at least medium light. Other good carpeting species would be like a dwarf sagittaria or dwarf chain sword. They grow a bit taller, but send out runners and fill in nicely after awhile. Also good medium light options. I love eleocharis/dwarf hairgrass for ground cover, but probably need high light and maybe Co2 for fast coverage. Fast growing is relative, if you want instant coverage, getting a couple pots would be the way to go.
  24. If it's only 5 gallons, I would probably go like peaceful bottom dwellers or maybe inverts. Way more options if you go bigger and depending on the betta..
  25. Pea puffer in a 5 gallon? nah probably no tank mates. Betta in a 5 gallon? probably can have tank mates like snails / shrimp or something small and not flashy I vote Betta.
