  1. Well I’ve never been one to journal but I’m nearing the 6 month mark on my first aquarium. Brief breakdown of my long journey and intro into the hobby: setting up an aquarium has been a dream of mine for the past 10 years since stumbling upon a YouTube video by uarujoey at the time. I was hooked! My parents had a 55 that was a community tank ( honestly hated it, never felt a connection to it ever!) that they did eventually get rid of after I started high school but never did I know the scale fish keeping was done. After going into the rabbit hole that was fish keeping YouTube back in 2010 my parents wouldn’t let me have a tank. I waited 4 years until I graduated high school when my parents let me have dart frogs! I kept dart frogs for about 4 years during college and bred about 6 different species of ranitomeya before I sold them off when I moved out of my parents. A 2 year stretch of not have any exotic pets while I finished college leads us to 6ish months ago when I finally decided to set up my desktop aquarium. I had just built a large desk setup that held my pc and 3 monitors and I had a 25x13 space on the end of the desk I knew what needed to be done. I ordered a 60p (17gal aquarium) online and decided I wanted to keep South American dwarf cichlids. I found a local fish store that had some apistos and I knew this was for me. I set up the tank in March let it sit for a month until cycled and added 12 cardinal tetras! Then about 3 months later I got my apistogramma blue steel, sold as borelli 😅, and have since got them breeding. It took about 3 months of them maturing and I am raising the first fry in this desktop aquarium! This has been by far the most fulfilling hobby I’ve ever been apart of and I can’t wait to continue this journey with all of you! make sure to follow my journey on my Instagram desktop_aquatics for dailyish pictures and I’ll continue to post journal entries on this forum post! here’s my tank and species inside!
  2. Hi guys! Been a while. So along with getting married, I got a promotion! I was hired on as a domestic relations paralegal at the law firm that I was a receptionist at, which means I got my own office too! So I was able to start a little office betta tank 🥰 He is a gorgeous little nemo who has really thrived in this tank. He's just in there with a mystery snail and is loving life, and is very popular with my coworkers!!
  3. I'm excited to share the progress I'm making in expanding my fish room. At our old house I had a tank in almost every room, but I've downsized and am trying to keep the tanks I'm running on the smaller size so that I can house more species and am able to spend more time admiring them, rather than maintaining. The 29 houses a school of neons, a small group of sterbai corys (5), as well as some otos and amanos. My goals for this tank are to really have the plants take off and have a more jungle look. I'm happy enough with the stocking and certainly don't want to be overstocked so I don't plan to add any more fish, though if I did I would add more of the same species. On the desk I have a 5 g marineland betta tank with a few mismatch shrimp. On the shelf is a 5 g fluval edge which currently only houses blue dream neocaridina shrimp. I plan to add a trio of clown kilis as soon as I am able to source them. Next to the 5g is the 12 g edge, which I removed the top from and disregarded the base and back stand. It is currently empty and I am trying to decide what to house in it. Currently I'm toying with the idea of chilli rasboras, habrosus corys, and yellow rice shrimp. Alternatively, I've always wanted to keep CPDs but haven't thought through the rest of the stocking there. Finally, I have another 5 g edge that has a stand to the left of the sofa (out of frame). It is also empty, and I'm going to hold off on it for a while to really figure out what I want in there, lots of ideas, but just not settled on anything yet. I'm open to any and all feedback, especially constructive criticism! I'm hoping to continue keeping this space my little meditative haven.
  4. Hello! I just wanted to share the couple of tanks I'm working on for my home office. The first is a 30gal planted tank, the second is a 5gal desk tank that I plan on planting as well. Both are in their cycle phase, and I need to scape the 5gal still. Neither look how I want them to just yet, but I'm really excited to get them stocked and get the plants fully grown. My fiance, @Nick L, and I want to turn this into a tank room slowly. We have a lot of empty tanks just waiting to have our ideas put to them. Can't wait to share as we make progress on everything 😊
  5. I have a Fluval Spec V on my desk at work. I am being sent home due to new COVID restrictions in my state. I really don't want to break it down but I can't leave the fish in there alone until January. The tank just has a small school of white clouds, a dwarf lily, and some pest snails. I think my options are either take everything living home with me and turn the tank off. Put an Auto Feeder and Timer on and let it run until I return. I could probably check on it once a week depending. Just looking for additional ideas.
