  1. I feel so bad for all the people who lost their farm animals and infrastructure, life's work, and income from this. And for the hobbyists who lost their fish and maybe other pets. Also for all of the wild animals who froze to death. No doubt a lot of horses and other farm animals perished as well. There are so many horses in Texas, not necessarily acclimated to such bitter cold and deep snow. It was very sad to see the piles of dead fish they had at Goliad. But they're already talking about selling scuds and mystery snails, and what a positive attitude that is!
  2. That is a lovely aquarium, and the stand is very nice, too! What brand is it, and how big? What are your stocking plans? Share lots of pics in your journey, please!
  3. The thing is they do shipping by one way only - priority mail. I'm assuming that saves them a lot of time, and that's how they always get in-stock shipments out same day or next day. Normally, priority mail is 2-4 days, but as we all know the shipping industry has had quite a few issues in the last year. Other vendors will ship express mail or FedEx, but you have to pay dearly for that. I've ordered plants from no less than 5 vendors. A-C is by far the best quality, the best packaged, and at a fair price, but they can't do anything about the weather or the USPS, and anything shipped live comes with a risk of being dead when it gets there. I hope your sprite bounces back - the roots seem to look ok!
  4. Wow, Cory, that wood stain is really nice. I can picture it when they see you approaching the store "uh oh, here comes Cory, he's the guy with 5000 fish tanks - watch him buy every single [name item] we have in stock...no, seriously...."
  5. Wow, I am totally blown away!!! I'm not a fishkeeper with years of experience, but being a part of this community has given me all the necessary tools, and so much more, to be successful. Being a very experienced mother and pet owner, and having a basic working knowledge of chemistry, has also come in real handy. Also since I just retired last fall and don't have many other hobbies, I've been able to spend probably a whole lot more time than most on my three aquariums and reading about fish. The real heroes here are the many very experienced fishkeepers who respectfully share their vast knowledge with the rest of us nerms. I guess I will have to try my hand at uploading a vid of the unboxing - I promise not to look at the shipping email! You're going to see my lovely Cosmo in that video - he's a real beauty! Thank you!!!
  6. I joined the Potomac Valley AS in January and got to see @Dean’s Fishroomat the virtual meeting in February. They're having a tailgate sale in a church parking lot in April, with appropriate social distancing and masks. I can't wait!!
  7. The Bacopa caroliniana plant is for sale on A-C's website, but I don't see a lot of people talking about it like vals, swords, crypts, anubias, etc., which everyone loves to discuss. I like the light green look of this plant and my stem plants do well (if I can manage to keep them planted in the substrate long enough, lol). Does anyone have this plant, and if so, how do you like it?
  8. I took a slight hiatus from thinking about fish 24/7 to watch a movie, Everest, and then had a sudden fascination with Mount Everest, its history and the trekking routes, the issues climbers face, the economic and environmental impacts, etc. I'm going to buy a couple of books about this, I think. Back to FISH, I got my A-C order today and am especially excited about my new Fluval Plant 3.0 light (packaged well, too). I also got a Christmas moss bridge, which did pretty well considering the weather and time (9 days). And some boring root tabs (plants say not boring), the pretty plant liner, and the exciting sticker!!
  9. I have nano pumps in all three aquariums (10, 20 and 45 gallon) and have had no problem with the airflow. My 45-gallon is 24" deep. The plug-in part stopped working after 4 months, but you can use one plug for two pumps, so I had an extra. I don't think they're made for long-term use, so you might have to replace it sooner. However they are absolutely silent, and they work in a power outage with a cell phone battery backup, so for those two reasons I will keep on using them.
  10. Here's a pic of my plakat betta, Cosmo. Yours looks pretty young to me. Do you know his approximate length? Cosmo is about 1.5-1.75" which I assume is around 6-9 months old. Sorry the pic is a little blurry. Maybe feed a lot less but 3x a day. Cosmo gets about 6 micropellets 3x a day.
  11. My LFS also sells RO water and saltwater fish but I wasn't aware they kept their for-sale fish in RO water. I'm going to ask them next time I go in there!
  12. Robins catching a quick bath in the puddle in my front yard.
  13. Day ?? I added one fry to the basket during last week's water change and the total now I believe is 5. I believe only one fry is from the original batch. They still look so tiny yet have grown a lot. It's really hard to photograph them in the middle area of the water because the phone cam wants to focus on the top, bottom or sides. I was able to film one eating a BBS. I'm sure they ate more as they were darting about looking for them. Oldest fry is on far left.
  14. @OceanTruthhe actually ignored all but the few right in front of him. I added them a few at a time but once he ate a few I thought that would get him going, but no. I'm not making BBS every day as there is way too much other food here, so he might have to wait a few days!
  15. @gardenmanthat sounds just like danios and rasboras, too! My danios go hunting specifically for eggs and fry every day - head down and eyes just a couple millimeters from the substrate, and glass-skimming top to bottom.
  16. To me its because we're inside and the weather is bad; we might have cabin fever; we look at our aquariums and see bare spots - go online "just to see what they have" or see if "that plant I've been wanting is back in stock". MTS comes with a lot of accessories.
  17. I fed Cosmo live baby brine shrimp today. He wasn't very happy at first. He likes his food to stay still! "You expect me to chase those tiny white dots? Give up the pellets"! Then when he realized no other food was forthcoming, he started showing off his maneuvering skills.
  18. Hey @Fish Folkthanks for posting those videos! After hearing more about plants like sweet potato, basil, and other plants out of people's HOBs, I want to do some of that, and I'm happy that mint is safe. We had it around the outside of our house and it quite literally grows like a weed! You can throw a 1" mint plant into the ground in mid-May (planting time in upstate NY), do absolutely nothing to it after an initial watering, and by the end of September you have mint runners 10 feet away or more. Must be a nitrate-sucking monster in a HOB. I've also heard, anecdotally, that it repels certain insects. This summer will be my first in retirement and I can't wait to get outside and do more gardening, and bring some of that into my aquariums too.
  19. I had to look up pearl danios as I'd never heard of them! They do look like the photo that came up. I wonder if they're real shy like dwarf emerald danios and CPDs.
  20. Cosmo's doing great so far! The dwarf water lettuce in this gif from yesterday whose roots look great? Not so much. I think the alum treatment did it in, and today it's disintegrated. I'm going to pull out some salvinia from the other tank and split it into two containers for alum treatment testing.
  21. Hi @Cyndi, thanks for the lily info! I am only using fake plants for cover for the shrimp and very shy dwarf emerald danios until the real plants fill in a little more, as this tank (20L) was just set up in December. There is also cryptocoryne wendtii, water sprite, java moss, java fern, some sort of dwarf grass, and anubias gold coin in there. The sprite really took off but then I had a bout of BBA which actually killed about half the sprite and started in on the fern; now that's under control and almost gone (Easy Carbon and light adjustment).
  22. Here is an article from Aquarium Coop on use of salt. Good luck! https://www.aquariumcoop.com/blogs/aquarium/aquarium-salt-for-sick-fish
  23. You can spot-treat individual plants in the tank - no need to take them out.@Irene has a YouTube video (Girl Talks Fish) showing how to treat with Easy Carbon.
