  1. Hello, may I ask what size is your tank? You may not need to gravel vac every week, but just do a water change by scooping out the water, and vac every other week, or vac only 1/4 of the bottom each week - this allows a lot of the beneficial bacteria to stay in the substrate. However if it's a very small tank, 50% a week WC sounds about normal to me. Changing just the water takes only moments.
  2. I'm sorry, but after reading the title of "banana plant soccer" I laughed out loud when I read this part. If they like banana plant soccer, is this called moss ball tennis? Do they compete in Aquarium Plant Olympics? It must be fun (in some way) to watch the antics tho probably frustrating at times to fix the mess! 😀
  3. It's almost time to get rid of the fake purple plant! Maybe when that new growth takes off a bit more. The danios and shrimp love the refuge it provides right now.
  4. I've dipped some Marimo moss balls, anubias, dwarf water lettuce, and crypt in alum, and so far they're doing fine. The crypt lost all its leaves but all mine have pretty much done that anyway, and grew back. The roots are still strong and healthy. I currently have java moss in alum treatment.
  5. Greetings! I've been so busy with my betta tank this week that I didn't notice this little gem creeping up in my 20L danio tank...won't be long now before it breaks the surface! More new growth also coming out the other side. of the bulb.
  6. Welcome! I'm from upstate NY too (Saratoga County) but now living in Maryland. I miss NY so bad - the mountains, lakes (Lake George has got to be one of the most beautiful, sparkling lakes in the world), farmers markets, wineries, garlic fests, gorgeous warm summers, fall beauty, and most especially, good pizza!! But I do not miss the awful winters.
  7. I'm trying to figure out how to feed my otocats without the snails stealing it all! But at least there still a bunch in the dish in the morning, so as long as I get up early, and lift slowly, I'm maybe not increasing the population. Gotta get those cats on prepared food before their smorgasbord is finished!
  8. I have salvinia and if it's not kept away, it gets continually battered in the filter flow and eventually dies, or it gets stuck behind the filter and accumulates debris back there, and makes a gross mess on the glass at the water line.
  9. Cosmo had a BLAST in the filter flow. Then a quick rest under the water lettuce.
  10. They should re-write all the statuses to match an appropriate fish. Elite Puffer is awesome!!
  11. My LFS finally had some Java moss - yay! It was a good price, too!
  12. Here is my new plakat betta, Cosmo. I guess they're coming info popularity for people who prefer the shorter fins. He's in a 10 gallon tank by himself, and loving every gallon so far. I read that plakats are more active and aggressive, which makes sense when you see how fast they can swim. I've also read that the koi plakats can change color dramatically, so while I adore his current coloration, I won't be surprised if it changes.
  13. I'll second @Hobbit's statement on the nano pumps. You literally cannot hear them at all. I use them in every tank for that very reason. They work during a power outage (with a backup cell phone battery).
  14. Short little nap, and showing off the ventrals.
  15. I miss the training sessions my job sent me to in Charleston SC. I particularly miss the sweet tea (I had to go half and half, lol), biscuits, and banana cream pie. Oh my.
  16. I hope Hugo gets better soon! I saw some beauties like him when I went to pick out Cosmo.
  17. Checking out the moss ball. Cosmo has been nonstop all over the tank. He's exploring everywhere! I just realized its Valentine's Day 💖
  18. I've named him Cosmo. I think I'm in love. Checking out the new cave. I think he likes his new home.
  19. Exploring the tank. He's very active. He was hungry, so I gave him 6 micropellets. It's odd feeding one pellet at a time.
  20. @OceanTruthI'm not sure where the company is. I paid for 2nd day air as I didn't think they'd survive any longer than that. It's in the 30s here and I was home, so they didn't sit outside. I didn't pay for the heat pack. I've had mixed results with receiving healthy plants except from the Coop. I also had my salvinia shipped a while back for another tank (different company), and that looked a bit sad too, but the salvinia took over the whole top and I've had to remove it regularly.
  21. A goldfish pond is my absolute dream!! In another post of "cost is no issue - what would you have", that's what I wrote - a goldfish pond! Mine was 800 gallons, and had a smaller barrel-shaped pond attached, since cost was not an issue - haha. Dream on! In reality, it would be way too much, even a small one, requiring electrical and plumbing work that makes it out of reach financially. Plus I'd need a shade structure as my yard does not get enough and they'd bake in the summer. Keep us posted on your progress!!
  22. I finally have the water in, cycled filter in, and tank turned on! I glued the anubias and planted what's left of rhe crypt (roots only - leaves all melted). I see I need to tuck the roots down a bit. I got a little glue on the rock but didn't see it until it turned white. Oops! I still have a dwarf lily bulb to place, and dwarf water lettuce in alum treatment. They are in sort of rough shape, but no issue so far with the alum. Some leaves are yellowing but that was probably inevitable. I know their offspring will look a lot better! Also have a Christmas moss bridge coming. One of the fake plants will have to come out to make room. The Coop has my size Fluval Plant 3.0 back in stock and that's on the way along with the moss. Yay!! How in the world am I going to wait until tomorrow for my betta now that it's all set up? Anubias golden Anubias barteri Cryptocoryne wendtii (poor thing!) Dwarf water lettuce and its two home-made plant corrals
  23. Any selective breeding/mutations that make it difficult to swim.
