  1. Fish love those wiggly detritus worms. I often see a rasbora rush over to grab one. I've never seen cyclops in my tank, but woe to them if they do show up! 🙂
  2. @JaredL, I respectfully disagree that it was two males sparring. I've seen my males fight (especially before I got 12 more fish, when there were only 7) and they attack pretty viciously (even some fin nipping), but it's not an extended battle and there was no synchronized swimming. I even made a post on this forum about the fighting, and that getting more curbed their aggression tremendously. Also there are lots of videos out there showing the exact same synchronized swimming behavior before and during spawning. It reminded me of the dancing that certain birds do before mating. Howrver, if there is a scholarly article or anything from a well-known fish expert to the contrary, I'll gracefully concede that I am wrong.
  3. I think this is a lidwigia repens. It grew to within an inch of the top and then started bending to stay submerged, so I trimmed it. There's new growth on the remaining piece, and several roots have started growing all along the length of the cut piece that's been floating - it's really cool! If I leave it floating, will the roots get long and flowing? If I plant it, will the "extra" roots stay, or will they dissolve once the substrate roots take off? This is one of my few very successful plants so I'm having fun watching it thrive.
  4. Gorgeous! I think the fish hormones in the water from all the frisky business going on in our tanks is making houseplants go "hmmmmmm". (J/K) 😃
  5. None of my children are into fish, but my daughter-in-law agreed to be the beneficiary of my fish and all supplies. Not that I'm planning on going anywhere soon, but ya never know. It brings me peace of mind to know they'll be taken care of.
  6. Cosmo is starting to relax more, but still on the go alot. I think going from a tiny bag to a tiny bowl to 10 gallons was a lot to handle. It looks like that spazzy phase is starting to come to an end - I caught him "stopping to smell the [anubias roots]" this morning! The lily still has not sprouted, though it's not soft. The crypt totally disappeared (couldn't take the alum treatment), and part of an anibias golden went bad so I pulled it (was superglued but came right off), cut off the bad part, and stuffed it into a nook rather than re-superglue (that's the surviving, slightly sorry looking piece he is investigating in pic). My Bacopa caroliniana came and is in the tank along with water sprite - he seems to like it.
  7. I think you can also adjust the ziss air stone to allow more air flow.
  8. I have moved a lot over my life, so I guess that's why fishkeeping never really entered my thought process as a child. I had a small tank around age 18 or 19, but had no idea what I was doing so it failed and I felt guilty when the fish died. Spent 7 years in the Air Force, got married, had kids and a job (sometimes 2) - no time and definitely no money for any hobby for the following 3 decades. Now I'm retired and have the time to put into and enjoy it, and the money to fund it.
  9. By the way I forgot where my other air pump was as I lost track of my thoughts - it's currently being used for the extra sponge in the 20-long getting seeded for the guppy quarantine tank! 😝
  10. Here ya go! Many thanks to the whole Aquarium Coop team!
  11. @OceanTruthsame here - all small fish and not enough to make such a setup worth it.
  12. Good luck with your fry! You have really lovely bettas. @OceanTruth, check out Goliad Farms on YouTube - he's got a video, maybe about 10 minutes or so, showing how he counts and bags up scuds. I was curious as I've never seen one either! It's hard to tell how big (small) they are but he estimated a thousand in the bag (and puts in hornwort for them to chow and hang on in transit).
  13. On the bright side (no pun intended), your tetras really stand out nicely!
  14. I would have chosen hornwort, but all the needles fell off mine except for a giant ball at the top. I guess leaving it floating is the key (or one key) to preventing that. Goliad Farms has some real good-looking hornwort.
  15. I'd want a discus/community tank, but also goldfish, so I'd have to make a really tough choice. Oh, first I'd need a new house.
  16. Congratulations Hobbit! Do you know how many fry you have now and do you have plans for them? Good luck selling them if that's your plan - they seem to go fast at the LFS.
  17. Not great quality but they caught me off guard and I didn't want to disturb them by getting closer.
  18. View of harlequin rasboras from my couch (sorry about the reflections)
  19. I'd love to have chickens, but my dog would drive everyone nuts barking and trying to get at them. There's even a little farm store down the road that had pre-built coops and chicks for sale!
  20. Are you still adding the fritz bacteria? When I used it to cycle I added some every day until it cycled - can't hurt, plus it has a short shelf life once opened.
  21. Maybe they look darker because mama shrimp is so dark. I bet they're fine - mama wouldn't still be carrying them around if they weren't alive.
  22. I picked up this poinsettia in December, and added only enough regular water to keep it from drying out until there was enough morning light in the plant window, around mid-February. I don't know much about poinsettias but heard they're dormant in the winter and shouldn't be watered a lot. Once the red leaves started dying off and the sun started shining on it, I started adding fish water. Wow. I hope I can keep it alive!

  24. This morning I found an adult danio in the fry basket. I am baffled as to how it got in there, as they generally avoid the top third of the tank. It took me 10 minutes to net the poor thing out and I won't be surprised if it doesn't make it. It was absolutely panicked being trapped in there. And now, I can only find 3 fry in there. Pardon the photo - I had just dumped breakfast in and a little extra came out when the adult made itself known.
