  1. I have 4 moss balls from A-C that are doing great, and 3 from a big box store that underwent alum treatment and turned a little brownish. I'm hoping they'll bounce back.
  2. Not me, but my daughter is! She named our black and white tuxedo cat "Hiei" when we adopted him in 2003. He passed away in 2019. If you put a photo of him next to the character, it fits!
  3. Hi! Do you have the Aqueon 45 gallon that's 24" high, 36" wide and 12" long? I have that one and hardly ever hear of anyone else with that size!
  4. Today was a busy and happy day!! Announcing...two baby koi angels (not yet named) and 3 firecracker guppies I just brought home. I bought them from a member of my LFC. The angels are in with my harlequin rasboras and tried to school with them at first - the rasboras are nervous.
  5. Hey @Coryit looks like you have room for another 800 on the left. We all know you secretly want another one. What do ya say? 😁
  6. This happened to me while fishless cycling using Dr. Tim's ammonia drops. The instructions are to bring NH3/4 level up to 5+ ppm, insanely high. Once the also insanely high nitrite was being consumed, my nitrates rose to 160 on the chart - probably even higher, and then the cycle stalled. This was about 5 weeks in and I'd been feeding it heavily that whole time with no water changes. I bet the nitrates were insanely high. Once I did a couple of large WCs, the cycle finished within a few days, and then I did another one right before adding fish from quarantine. This whole process took about six weeks. I feel like it was way too extreme, although I must say doing it gives you a really rock-solid cycled tank. It's so much easier to cycle with a small number of fish and consistent monitoring.
  7. I think it's mostly marketing by corporations. They get to sell carbon filters over and over and over again, and the motors themselves in HOBs eventually wear out. I've never heard anyone who actually has an UGF complain about it. Look at the stories here - one running since 2001!?! Has anyone on here had a HOB for that long?
  8. This sounds similar to the app some websites have for furniture/room design (HGTV has one). You tell it the room type and size, it selects the appropriate furnishings, and you drag and drop wherever you want. It allows you to make furniture different shapes and sizes too. Replace the "room" selections (living, dining, bed, etc) with "scaping materials" (wood, stone, substrate, plants, etc.). Then within each "scaping materials" section, make different choices available for sizes/shapes/colors/plant types, etc. What a fun app that would be.
  9. Hi Betsy, that tank looks really nice! Do you have a specific type in mind? I went with the intention of getting a plakat, but there were so many gorgeous fish it was hard to decide. I ended up with a "galaxy koi" plakat (red, white and blue), who is now in the process of changing color to almost all blue. I was taken aback by a "candy koi" (red, white and pink) and would imagine those eventually turn mostly red. And then there are all the longer-finned choices and colors. So much beauty and personality - I wish they could get along together!

    Shrimp diseased

It's very strange that today they are seemingly back to normal, but I think I lost a few. No idea what could have caused this.
  11. @TheDukeAnumber1we need additional reactions solely for the purpose of your memes!!
  12. I heard that Aquashella is going to be in Chicago this year.
  13. I agree with @1moretankin keeping stability. Many very experienced fishkeepers on here suggest that stability is much more important than chasing water parameters, and you can read their experiences with success in this regard. Also, adding chemicals and constantly testing and worrying can be highly stressful on the fish and on you as the fishkeeper, and that's not good either. You don't want to burn out on the hobby, especially if you lose them after trying so hard to make them comfortable. If you decide on angels, please post pics and keep us informed on their progress! I'm picking up my first angelfish this weekend and can't wait!
  14. I had a little rotten piece on my anubias golden, but was able to cut it off. The remaining piece has warped leaves and is floating in the quarantine tank right now to see if it makes it.
  15. It's funny how snails always seem to provide good size comparison data!
  16. I got this plant from the Coop a few months ago and it's really doing well. I can't get a good picture of it because the fry basket is in the way, but it's got really lovely round leaves and the danios like the cover it provides.
  17. The lucky buyers will be saying hello to some beautiful fish 🙂
  18. @Hobbitthis fish is so hard to see - when I first got them they were gray juveniles and I couldn't even always see them all in the 5 gallon quarantine tank. This am I found another adult in the basket! I was able to guide it out by turning the basket a bit and using a net, and then decided to raise up the top above the water line. Well I found 6 new fry in the little ledge at the top, so I scooped them through force of water into a cup and put them in the basket. I know most won't make it anyway but I think I might set up my little mini bow for them because I know I'm going to keep finding them and want to at least give them a chance.
  19. @CorydorasEthanWOW what a spectacular pair of wild bettas!! That whole documentary is great - how I love David Attenborough!
