  1. Is that a discus lying on the bottom next to the upside-down one? Your description fits!! This makes me want to go buy night vision glasses!
  2. I now have 10+ guppy fry and many of them are totally fearless! They can outrun dad easily - he doesn't even try anymore, but I've seen mom and auntie getting very close - I think they've gotten a few. I'm feeding alot and the snail population is responding accordingly - oh well, fry gotta eat. They keep swimming in and out of the java moss so there could be a lot more than I can count. The angels are still growing and doing great too! Tang is almost as big as Clementine now.
  3. Duke, you're being very coy about your A+ meme/gif capabilities! (Or are you trying to be koi?) 😀
  4. On the issue of hydra - my advice is don't worry about it. It's been around for millions of years and self-replicates from a single cell. You can try medication, but every time you put something new in your tank, hydra could come back. If you feed live baby brine shrimp to your fish, hydra will also eat that and explode in population. I've heard that some gouramis find it to be a tasty treat. I think my rasboras have nabbed a few as well, when pickings are slim (such as Sundays - their "just a few spriulina flakes" day). The "balance" that Irene talked about regarding algae and plant health - a lot of us are dealing with plant loss while trying to achieve balance. Many people suggest less light as a first resort to battling algae. Plants sometimes seem to be more difficult to understand than fish!
  5. @Hobbitwhen I watched the vid of them moving the 800 gal, I cringed and screamed "use a dolly, use a dolly!!" I don't even know exactly what I did to compress the disk in my back, but here I am over a year later still dealing with pain every day (too afraid to try surgery). Working thru it for aquarium maintenance and fish care, but unable to get much else done. Please, folks, use equipment to move heavy stuff!!
  6. I started with 8 juvenile rasboras in my pre-cycled 45-gal tank without any problem at all, then added 6 otocats a few weeks later, and 12 more juvenile rasboras a few weeks after that, and lastly, 2 juvenile angelfish. I've also read to add smaller fish first so that the larger ones don't have an established territory and possibly attack any newcomers who don't yet know the "lay of the land".
  7. Wow! I am out for a week due to re-injuring my back and come back and a huge event is being planned!! Yay! I'm a terrible event planner and still nursing my pain, but would love to be in on the contests and any livesteam!
  8. Interesting - I was at a chain pet store and saw a whole tank of serpae tetras nipping each other's fins. Pretty much all of them had serious fin damage. It was a very sad sight.
  9. It makes me sad to know what must happen to most of the unfortunate females of fish that have less color than males. My 2 female guppies are not as flashy but still very lovely, though 3 weeks in I've gone from 3 guppies to 10 guppies (and counting)...
  10. I've had some back problems the past week or so, but found guppy fry in the quarantine tank today, there's now 6 or 7 danio fry large enough to eat BBS, my lily has sent one leaf to the top and is sending another, 2 of my anubias have new leaves, a stem plant I trimmed has a second branch on it, and all but a few select plants are currently doing much better than I!
  11. Guess what I found in the guppy quarantine tank today!! https://youtube.com/shorts/m1W_pxdT9E4?feature=share
  12. I can't see the pics of Hugo but am glad he's doing better!
  13. After several leaves sproured and stayed at the bottom over the past weeks, a new one has volunteered to try again for the top. I've had a lot of unknown-cause issues causing massive die-off of my floating water sprite, so I'm going to let the lily have a chance at the top now.
  14. Many years ago, I got stung by something and had an allergic reaction requiring epinephrine at the emergency room. I'd been stung numerous times before with nothing but normal pain, local swelling, and itching. I've been stung 2 or 3 times since then with no allergic reaction, so assume it was some oddball type of wasp or hornet. That is the only time I've ever had an allergic reaction to anything.
  15. Clementine and Tang have grown a lot the past 2 weeks. They've settled in really well. Time to pick at the stem plants: They love the sword: Clementine: Tang:
  16. All of Irene's videos on plant care - would like to see more detailed vids for us "in the middle" not beginners but not experts Dean's angelfish care Fishroom build Betta setup at store Goldfish eating all the duckweed (not really a "favorite" but adding because I guess I was one of the few who enjoyed that)
  17. When I added newcomers, I did the weekly tank maintenance a day early so it wouldn't be necessary on the new fish day, and kept the tank lights off after adding them, so everyone could meet and greet with as little outside stress as possible. I acclimated them to temp and water, as they came from different water. I fed them lightly that evening, but many people don't feed right away.
  18. @Lifeisgood, only six weeks! I bought him on 2/14/21. I think it's perfectly normal but didn't expect it to be so fast.
  19. Berried yellow shrimp (yay!) and female dwarf emerald danio.
  20. I was looking back at "old" photos of Cosmo and thought I'd compare one with a pic taken today, side by side. The transformation is almost complete. I also caught a pretty pink ramshorn in the big tank and added it to his tank - don't think he's even noticed yet! February 14: March 30:
  21. I have soft water and sprinkled about a cup of aragonite in the substrate. It raised my pH from 7 to 7.4 and my GH and KH both from 4 to 7. I also give them mineral junkie bites.
  22. @gardenmanthanks! I always enjoy learning in this hobby. And trust me I know all about quality of video in the 60s and 70s. 😬
  23. @gardenman and @Biotope Biologist thank you! This is also a mom-and-pop store that's been around a very long time - House of Tropicals, near Baltimore MD.
  24. I find salvinia minima to be a good alternative to what I've heard about duckweed. It's similar in appearance, doesn't grow quite as fast, but quickly covers the top (and also may require occasional removal).
