  1. I have kept shrimp and White Clouds in outdoor tubs that were good in a wide range of temperatures. However, I would recommend slow temperature acclimation, even for the most hardy species. Here in Vermont, I have to move everything indoors for the off-season.
  2. Thanks @Alexa! I changed up the filtration on my 2.5 gallon window tanks with Co-Op sponge filters. I removed the MF10 from each, plus the center piece of foam, rotated the side pieces, and jammed a small sponge in the center gap. The foam needs to be there to support the glass divider, which holds the light, and the shrimp can swim past the glass. I really enjoy trying to fit aquarium technology into tiny tanks. I tested without the uplift tube, but there was too much splashing. I probably don't even need a filter, but the shrimp love it. Someone needs to make a meme about shrimp and foam.
  3. Hey @Daniel, tell us more about your Haas Mini Mill!
  4. Was Cyanobacteria the problem for the bass, or something else?
  5. The librarian cleaned and refilled the whole tank, and I walked her through how to prime the canister. Sam is back in, and happily swimming around again! I will sleep easier tonight.
  6. We can't really discuss other vendors besides Aquabid and Aqua Huna, as I understand it, so I will just say that you have probably already heard of him.
  7. Thanks @Daniel. It is possible that a water change was done which dropped the level below the heater, and failing as you describe. The heater was still hot when I pulled it out. He was doing that leg thing with the other leg too yesterday, like he was taking turns with them. The librarian is going to take Sam out, and do a full-tank cleaning today, which makes me feel a little better. Helping with this setup has been humbling, but with mistakes comes learning.
  8. The librarian is reporting that Sam has not moved off his rock and into the water. I think he either got shocked, or the broken heater leached some chemicals into the water. I think we need to do a complete water change. I'm feeling really upset and worried right now. I'm at a different school today, so I can't just go deal with it immediately as I would like to. Can anyone please offer some experienced insight into this? I haven't had a broken heater since I was a teenager. Thanks!
  9. I think I could get away with plants as my only filters in most of my tanks, but I also like to move water. The Co-Op sponge filters are good at moving water, and provide generous surface area even if you have tons of plants. Shrimp and Otocinclus also love to graze on foam.
  10. I am testing maple leaves in a bucket with a sponge filter and snails. I did not want to do this experiment, but leaves fell in my tubs before I moved them inside.
  11. Zebra Mussels. Clear water, out-competing everything that eats algae. They are also the bane of Lake Champlain, with Eurasian Milfoil next.
  12. Everyone knows that Die Hard is the best Christmas movie.
  13. A little follow-up info: In my schedules, you can see that I vary the three different white values. This isn’t because of some secret formula, but just because I like having some variation in the color balance. If you wanted to try that, you could +/- each white value at 05:30, 09:30, 19:00, and 21:00. Then the color balance could shift slowly over your plateaus. I hope that makes sense.
  14. I delivered more Dwarf Water Lettuce today. I went to take some photos and he was doing this leg stretch, tail stand thing. I was wondering how well the heater would do in this tank. Apparently, not so well when Sam decides to rearrange his rock pile: No more glass heaters! I knew better, but thought I could place it right.
  15. Let us know how it goes, and we can help you refine it! Start a tank journal and share some photos of your setup and inhabitants. Cheers
  16. Jill, welcome to the forum. I think there are about four of us from Vermont here now! Cheers from exit 10.
  17. I mocked up a potential schedule you could try in pro mode. Your light would start coming on at 05:00, finishing ramping up at 05:30, then steady until 09:30, where it ramps down to zero at 10:00. At 18:30, it would start the second ramp, then run steady from 19:00 to 21:00, ramping down to just 1% blue at 21:30, then fully off at 22:00. This would be about equivalent to eight hours of light. You would have to to test to see how you and your plants like it, and scale up or down as necessary, or move the times a bit.
  18. Welcome to the forum, @Frederick! Your light will continue to run whatever schedule you have with or without your phone. You just use the app to change your settings, or sync the time if the power has gone out. If you are thinking of having a split schedule, how much time do you spend with your tank before work, and how much after?
  19. Surprise! I raised a Dragonfly in my Betta tank. (This was not part of the plan.)
