    FYI, I killed my iPhone XS by taking a pond photo in hot weather. I took previous underwater photos, but now I have a refurbished iPhone on order.

    For white stuff on wood, we often use the term, 'biofilm'. This can mean many things, including algae, bacteria, fungi, decomposition, or other forms of slow biology. Many of our favorite inhabitants love biofilm.

    The Aquarium Co-Op Sponge filters have coarse sponge, and sink with the included weights. I'm not sure you could go cheaper with the same function. My purchases help support this forum.

    I have enjoyed collecting Apex Temperature and pH data to learn how my tanks change with lighting and other conditions.

    Thanks @eatyourpeas and @Patrick_G! They dug it very deep, 25 feet deep in the middle. Their kids, now adults, some with their own kids, added goldfish as kids, and I saw a half dozen. I thought that they might have meant Koi, but nothing I saw was longer than 4-5 inches. I am going to add my White Clouds, and some shrimp. I wonder if I will ever see them again. I am tempted to spend on plants for the perimeter, and perhaps drop in some wood for hiding spots.

    I think my cousins built this pond in the 1990s. It was probably way cheaper than putting in a pool. Now I would never want a pool, because a pond is self-sustaining and does not require water treatment. I love shire life! I am going to try to spend my days off here until it gets cold.

    I finally visited my cousins’ pond, and I can’t wait to put some fish and shrimp in there. I should have brought a swimsuit. The last photo is the holding pond.

    Hi @Nanci B, I appreciate your kind words! I prefer organic soil aquariums to describe my tanks. I went through an evolution with my soil and caps. At first, I thought more was always better, and went big on each layer of soil, sand, and gravel. Then I read Diana Walstad's book a bit more closely, after having soil suffer under too-much sand. Now my recipe is 1-1.5" organic soil, capped with a modest amount of 2-4mm gravel. By modest, I mean as little as you can get away with, perhaps as little as 0.5". I want to make sure that the soil can breathe, and that mulm can join the soil. That is why I like the more coarse nature of gravel. Some of my current tanks still have a small layer of sand under the gravel, but I removed most of it. The plant you mention might be Cryptocoryne Wendtii.

    Awesome @James Black! Let us know how it goes. I mixed a bunch of sinking food together for my shrimp, but I feel like it is a supplement to algae and biofilm.
