  1. I looked at the other photos, and I think the filter bit is just stuffed in there for shipping. It would go square on the end when installed. When I ran marine tanks, I used to accidentally breed brine shrimp in my canisters.
  2. I got a Top Fin siphon unit with an inline pump with a power switch on the cable. It supports using an intake sponge too. I got mine to kit-bash a filter for fun, so I have not yet used it properly.
  3. I made this move with a female Betta, from a heavily planted 3.5 to a community 16, and it has worked out swimmingly! I think that she enjoys the space and stimulation, and doesn’t mind the other inhabitants. Because of the wood, she has a spot where she can chill and just look into the room. I think having the Betta as the last inhabitant is the way to make it work.
  4. With my SAEs in a couple of community tanks, I try to feed multiple types of food at once, so there are options for everyone, and the SAEs don’t have to compete.
  5. I had to setup two buckets again because I have too much wood and Anubias. The third bucket is outside now. I just don’t trust that my lake plants are free of zebra mussels yet.
  6. Welcome! Now we need to see your freshwater journal(s), and you can make a signature too:
  7. You could also try one or more coarse sponges like the Co-Op carries: https://www.aquariumcoop.com/collections/type_filter-media/products/sponge-pad-coarse
  8. I’m sure @Randy would appreciate your compliments!
  9. Using a siesta or dual siesta can be another strategy for managing viewing time:
  10. Thanks for sharing! There are a few current or former marine folks on the forum, including me. It is nice to see the current state of the saltwater hobby, without trying to keep up with an additional forum. I will be following your updates with interest!
  11. I remember teenage girls saying, "grody to the max!", along with, "gag me with a spoon!". Meanwhile, we (teenage boys), were saying, "rad", "sick", and "wicked!" I am medium old now.
  12. That can be a nice size for a small shrimp colony with enough algae and biofilm.
  13. I would encourage you to add a journal link in your signature: Let us know if you need any help!
  14. Easy Carbon is more about algae management and is not the same as dosing CO2. At some point, I will try CO2 again with my Apex.
  15. I tried four of them, but I should have tried one. It was interesting to play with C02, but it is so hard to get precise control with a single-stage regulator. I would only get a dual-stage regulator with a solenoid that you can control with an outlet timer, or via pH and timer with an Apex system.
  16. If you go with organic soil, I would recommend 1-1.5 inches, with a modest cap of 2-4 mm gravel. You could try about a 0.5 inch cap, and add a little more if necessary. If you go this route, get the book. I am still dialing in my preferred cap depth, since I have tried several layer and depth configurations. I am moving away from using sand as a layer in my caps. My gravel is a mix of Peace River and Rio Grande, sifted to mostly use pieces in my size profile.
  17. Do you have well water, treated well water, municipal water with chlorine, or municipal water with chloramine?
  18. I finally took the survey. The questions really dialed into the details, even though I do not yet breed fish, so I was not able to answer all of them. I have bred shrimp, but just for me, and I have gotten store credit for floating plants.
  19. I am catching up on many threads, so please excuse me if I missed any thread details. What are you doing to grow algae with lights or sunlight?
  20. It would be useful for you to know which chemical is being used to treat your water. I off-gas water with chlorine in a bucket with an air stone for 24-36 hours. This saves me from having to treat water, which I would have to do with chloramine.
  21. @Biotope19, the second design allows for a nice recliner, and perhaps a media setup as well.
  22. Does your local water come from a well, or is it treated with chlorine, or chloramine?
