  1. I feed my bristlenose plecos a variety of food. they get pleco/ spirulina wafers or sticks, canned green beans, cucumbers, zucchini. Plus they eat on the foods that I feed the rest of the tank, including the sinking pellets and sticks for the corydoras in the tanks. LL mine get the same foods, and never had any issues except for the one type of sword plants that I described above.
  2. I was about 14 years old and had purchased some angelfish from a LFS. I ended up having two pairs form, and they started spawning, at first I let the parents go to see if they'd raise the babies, but they didn't. So, off to the library to get some books and learn, I was bound and determined that I was going to raise the babies, and I did. Ever since then, I have had at least one tank going except for a period of about six months when I got divorced and had to move into a small apartment.
  3. Some of the rice fish looks great from above. Ones I can think of offhand are the orange or red cap medaka ones. A couple people have shown them in videos on YouTube from top down.
  4. I would suggest this, and also go to Lowe's or Home Depot and look in the lighting, there are some LED light bulbs that screws into a regular socket that put out some serious light. They are in a star pattern and some of them you can adjust the "legs" to point where you want them to. I got some for in my garage, I only have two light fixtures in there, and I went from dark and dim to nice and bright able to see great.
  5. I stopped at a store in Knoxville at a store called The Aquarium I believe when I was in the area years ago. Then several years later, I saw it on a YouTube video by Pecktec.
  6. I don't think there aren't any clubs that are totally virtual, but a lot have been having virtual meetings. I actually joined in on one that had master breeder Dean as a guest speaker a few weeks ago. The Ohio Cichlid Association has been doing them live on YouTube and I've also joined in on those a couple times.
  7. Great idea, and even if someone is on a well and not city water it would be good just to have a sediment and carbon block filters. I have a well, and have a whole house sediment filter and it collects quite a bit.
  8. These are on my list of fish I want to keep, I just need more room for more tanks, but working on expanding my fishroom this fall.
  9. So with the pandemic going on, and group sizes limited for meetings, what are some of the things your local fish clubs doing to still have fishy activities? I'm a member of a couple clubs, one has been dead, except for the Facebook page. Another has been doing fish buys, and we have a swap meet coming up this weekend that I'm excited about. It is being held outside in a parking lot at a mall. I'll be sure to take some pics and post them on here, and going to try to shoot some video as well.
  10. Congrats to all! I really enjoy this forum, and its because of all the great people on here.
  11. I have heard this from people before and had never had any issues in my tanks. However, at my last fish club meeting before the pandemic set it, I won a Kleiner prinz sword in the raffle, and put it in my leopoldi angelfish tank, which also has a couple bristlenose plecos. I noticed one day a couple leaves that looked chewed up, and one of the BN sitting on one. Within another day or so, they had it chewed down to just a couple small nubs above the crown, so I pulled it out and put it into another tank that has no plecos, and it has slowly recovered. The leopoldi angelfish tank has a red melon sword in it and there are no issues with it. So, my conclusion is that it may just be certain species of swordplants they find tastier.
  12. I am going to build myself one of these fry systems this fall when I'm remodeling my fish room. I have planned a spot for a 20 long just for it, I'll have to look into the tubs you're using if I can't find the ones Dean has said he uses.
  13. Kribs are a species I want to get hold of and try my hands at breeding. Maybe I'll be able to find some at my local club's swap this weekend.
  14. Looks nice Jimmy! I'm sure when it grows in it will be pretty sweet.
  15. I have kept cories on every kind of substrate you can get for an aquarium and have never had any issues with them losing barbels. I think as long as they are well fed and you don't feed small foods that will get down into the gravel or whatever so they don't have to go digging to look for food you will be fine.
  16. I say as long as you are upfront with a buyer as far as any hitchhikers that may be included, I wouldn't worry too much about a bleach or peroxide dip. I always put in my ads when selling, may have snails and or eggs, algaes, baby shrimp etc. As for packing, I've received plants packed all sorts of ways, but generally as long as you pack them so they don't get damaged and protected from extreme temp swings, you should be good.
  17. I like this overflow idea. I have seen before where someone had the overflow inside the tank and would rotate the pipe to drain water for water changes etc, but I like this better because you don't have to reach in the tank then, just turn a valve. I would just make sure to put a strainer on the inside of tank or a piece of foam so no small fish gets into the overflow.
  18. Yes, I find the noise from the air gurgling as the one fault of these boxes.
  19. exactly what I was going to recommend. I used this stuff a lot when I had a saltwater reef tank to hold live rock together and to affix corals to the rock. I would use a sandwich of this epoxy with gel superglue surrounding to hold.
  20. Thanks for this! It is definitely something I want to build for next year as the area I want to put my tub ponds is not close to electric outlets.
  21. Unfortunately, that is how a lot of the plecos are. I hardly ever see most of mine until I'm in the tank cleaning such as pulling sponge filters o clean etc
  22. I'd just leave them in the pond for now and let them grow. they will develop colors soon.
  23. I too would go for the group of fry. They'll adapt to your water easier and with a group that size, your bound to have more than one male. As for guppy population control, you could stick to one sex, I've seen some nice looking tanks of just male guppies.
