  1. I figured you had to be someplace like that to have tap water come out that warm. Good luck figuring out how to cool it down.
  2. Where do you live that tap water comes out that warm in summer? I'm in northern Ohio and have a well thats 80' deep my tap comes out upper 50s year round. The only thing i could think of is a cistern type thing buried in yard that would collect rainwater (if you live someplace that gets enough rain), then run a coil of your cold water supply line in that. By having it buried in the ground, it would use the insulation advantage of the ground to help cool.
  3. I love the 40 breeder and 75 gallon sizes, I like the footprints for aquascaping, I feel that the 18" front to back is so much better for scaping versus the 12" of a 55 or 40 long. And they aren't too tall that when they are on a typical height stand that I can't reach all the way to the back and bottom of the tank without getting my entire arm up to my armpit into that tank.
  4. I would test the water you are adding to the tank. You say that you bring tap water home from work, check it, If it's city water, they may have changed their chemicals they add, such as changed form straight chlorine to chloramine, which would cause the ammonia problems. Also, test your tap water at home, most well water is fine for fish unless you have sulphur in your water. I've lived in two different houses with well water and used it for my fish tanks, including my fish room now. What have you done for filter maintenance? Make sure you just rinse any sponges out using tank water.
  5. Glad to see one of these in action, and that its well liked. I've heard the Ziss suction cups are some of the best, need to get some to hold heaters, those ones seem to always stop holding after a short while.
  6. Welcome back to the fishkeeping hobby! The Fluval filter you are planning on would be "enough" filtration for your tank, and I like the idea of using a spray bar to help aerate and disperse the water being returned to the tank. However, I would get a hold of one of the USB air pumps that the coop sells along with a Ziss never clog airstone to help with some aeration and circulation. The pumps are quiet and small so they can be easily hidden. As for lighting, if you aren't going to do live plants, you don't need the Fluval 3.0. You can get the Aquasky or even one of the cheap beamsworks or nicrew ones off Amazon or eBay, I believe there are some that are wifi compatible for control, if not, use on of the smart plugs that are readily available.
  7. I hope it does as well, but from what I've heard from several sources, that all the major shipping companies (USPS, UPS, FedEx) have been shipping more items than they normally do even at Christmas time, it will be interesting to see what happens in next few months.
  8. I have seen in several videos that they have used a single handle shower control valve, which is probably cheaper than going with a thermostatic valve. I would just have a place where i could put an inline thermometer to monitor the temp.
  9. Looks like the right stuff, just make sure it doesn't say on the packaging that its fire retardant.
  10. Probably because its ben hard for a lot of fish to be shipped around the world. I was talking the other day to an LFS owner and he told me its getting better, but the shipping and freight costs have got up a lot, so some stores aren't getting much in.
  11. I always liked the shimmer effect in a tank, when I kept reef tanks, I was very reluctant to switch my lighting from metal halide because I didn't want to lose the shimmering effect, but I eventually got rid of them because of the cost of operating them and the replacement bulb costs.
  12. I have procured a couple of the 100 gallon Rubbermaid tubs that I am planning to set up next summer for breeding projects, and am really thinking I'll put some kind of shrimp in each. The red on those is something else.
  13. They could be still settling into their new home as well, so they may be a little reluctant to eat the first day or two. In my experience rams are good eaters, and haven't had problems with them not wanting to eat certain foods, they usually eat pretty much anything I throw in the tank.
  14. A 20 long would be great for a pair. I kept pairs in both 20 long and highs and no issues. Are you planning to let the babies just grow out in the tank with the parents or will you be pulling them and growing out in another tank? Either way will be fine, you'll just have to watch filtration and water changes to keep water parameters in check. Good luck with the breeding project!
  15. I no longer us HOB filter, but when I did, I always liked the Aquaclear ones. I liked that I could pull up the media containers, rinse the foam, and put back. Its also very easy to use other medias if you need or want to.
  16. The LFS i worked in did have UG filters in most tanks. It was an old school store, wish it was still around, he always got in some nice fish, along with the stuff not every store has.
  17. If you have some media in another tank, take some of it out, or even if its a sponge filter, squeeze it out into the new tank. Sometimes LFS will sell cycled sponge filters. I know when I used to work at an LFS we would sell a scoop of gravel out of a tank for people setting up new tanks.
  18. My wife has been getting tired of me talking about fish as well. My oldest boy, who's 8, loves the fish, and likes to be down in the fish room helping. He's the one who wanted the apistos we got yesterday, he even talked the lady down in price. My most local club hasn't had any meetings or activities since March, I've been trying to get the president to go along with doing something outdoors, but she is against it. The club that hosted this swap is about an hour and half from me, I make the drive a few times a year for meetings and their auctions.
  19. Enjoying following this build out. So, @Cory since you're doing the fish room/ studio, is Dorkula in charge of the remodeling and decorating the house?
  20. We had a great day yesterday for the club's first outdoor swap, rained in the morning, but it was cleared out by 11am! I took a bunch of bristlenose plecos, neocaridina shrimp and plants, I sold all the bristlenose and shrimp. They sold over 60 spots for people to sell, and there was a great turnout of buyers as well, I think a lot of people were happy to get out of the house and enjoy some fish nerdiness fun. I ended up bring home a Kleiner prinz swordplant, some apistogramma baenschi, L393 cheese creek plecos and some gold back yellow neo shrimp. I will have to post some pics later tonight or tomorrow of the fish, I got them acclimated and went to bed, it was a long day. I had planned to do a video of the swap and all, but forgot, my 8 year old son even forgot to remind me, I guess we were too caught up in all the fishy excitement.
  21. Interested to see how these goodeids do for you in a set up like this. I'm working with a couple species of goodeids now, and I had thought of moving them to a tub pond outside for the summer, but my winters get too cold (NW Ohio) for them to overwinter.
  22. Good idea there! I like the idea of overhead sumps and even better growing pothos in it to help with nitrates.
