  1. I have a group of these that I am hoping to get to spawn this fall and winter, I feed mine a mix of frozen blood worms and brine shrimp, some pellets I get from ebo aquaristik that is high protein with fish and shrimp in, I will also throw in some thawed raw shrimp cut into chunks.
  2. Chris Biggs "The Mad Aquarist" he has a YouTube channel. Bob Steenfott, I don't remember you having him as a guest yet. Jason from Jadren Aquatics, he seems to do a lot for the hobby I don't know the guys name, but has a YouTube channel called "Fishboy", does a lot of breeding, is planning to be opening an LFS
  3. I am going to order some Weld-on #4 and 16 from Amazon. the #4 is thin and the 16 is a little thicker. You can get cans of it along with needle applicators for less than $20 each. I've been watching some videos on YouTube and getting ideas of how to do it.
  4. I was able to grab a bunch of scraps of acrylic from work, we had to make a bunch of partitions because of the pandemic, and they were just going to be thrown out. It's all 1/4", nothing too large but, I am going to try my hand at gluing some stuff up. I'll probably start with something like a specimen container or photo tank first to get my feet wet and then I have enough I can make a couple 24"x24"x12"
  5. I would also either use a good quality outdoor paint or if you want natural wood look some outdoor rated polyurethane or varnish to protect the wood from any spills or leaks.
  6. I don't currently have any discus, but in the past when I kept them, I had angelfish, corydoras, cardinals, rummynose, pencilfish, apistogrammas, and several different kinds of plecos, including zebras. I kept the tank about 83 degrees and everything did fine, weekly water changes of about 25-30%
  7. That Rain Bird unit you have may have a wifi unit available to add on and make wifi controlled. I just installed a Rainbird wifi controller at work on a sprinkler system for our football stadium field. I can turn it off or on from my phone, works great. Downside is entire controller was $900, but I'm controlling 12 zones, I'm sure most peoples fishrooms only need a few zones at most so could get away with a smaller control option.
  8. They did great for me. I had a 180 gallon tank that I had them, wild discus, a bunch of misc tetras, and corydoras catfish in. I tried for a while to get the altums to spawn but was never successful, but they were great fish.
  9. I'm interested in following your journey in keeping these beautiful fish. I got altums in years ago, the LFS I worked part time at would import fish from South America, and I got some. I let the store owner quarantine and treat them first before I took them home as I was young in my fish keeping hobby. I am thinking about getting them again as I have a 93 cube tank, its like 28" tall so I think the tall altum angels would look great in it. Good luck and be sure to update how they are doing!
  10. No problem, I though others should know about it. Too bad they haven't updated the website yet so it can be read online right now.
  11. Great idea! I have a thriving colony of blackworms that live in the substrate of one of my tanks, I'll see one come out every now and then and get picked off by a fish in the tank.
  12. If you fertilize the plants with the easy green and root tabs and they still are not growing, I would look at the lighting situation, if you can afford a Fluval 3.0 would be great, but there are several good budget LED lights that will grow plants great, I use the Beamsworks ones that are available on Amazon, you can get a" one for $35-50 and they will grow plants. Bentley Pascoe has a couple excellent videos on YouTube that go over several of the more budget friendly LED plant lights. I wish you luck on your plant journey, maybe if you mast the plants you have, and get a nice lush beautiful tank, your parents will say you can get more plants or even more tanks!
  13. I use eco-complete in most of my planted tanks either by itself or with Fluval stratum, and don't have any problems keeping plants down in it except for stem plants. Actually the reason I use it mixed with stratum is because it helps hold plants down as the stratum is so light that I have trouble getting rooted plants to stay down.
  14. Was it the coop had pink crypts? I've been watching for them to come back in stock, and just checked when seeing this, and see they're out of stock.
  15. I have used oak and mulberry leaves form my yard and woods. The only thing is you want to make sure you get the leaves from someplace that is free of pesticides. I will take a couple handfuls and boil them for a couple minutes, it helps them sink a lot faster.
  16. I have kept angels and discus together many times. I kept the water temp 82-84 and they did fine together. As long as you can make sure everyone eats their fair share, keep up water changes you should be fine.
  17. I got a shipment of Aquarium Hobbyist Magazine in the mail over the weekend, they send me a bunch every quarter for distribution at my local fish club meetings. I was just glancing through one this morning and there is a scaper spotlight on the co-op's own @Lizzie BlockIt's a nice two and half page article on her and her experiences, along with some great pictures of some of her scapes she has done. I looked online, and the newest issue isn't available online yet, so I couldn't link it.
  18. I used it in a tank that had jungle val, and it melted the jungle val. It didn't kill it, but caused the leaves to melt back to the crowns, and they did come back after a while.
  19. I love sword plants, I have several different varieties, and it is hard to pick a favorite.
  20. I went to an auction this past Saturday, and tucked amongst a bunch of tools, lawn equipment and such was a Fluval flex 15 gallon tank. I ended up getting it for $7, including some mixed blue gravel and an auto fish food feeder. The only problem is, it didn't have the light included. I am thinking of setting it up at work in my office and doing it planted with some shrimp and nano fish. Can any of you guys give me ideas for a small light that will be good for plants for this tank, maybe a clip on type? I haven't really done too much research yet, but would the Fluval nano one be too powerful?
  21. I have not tried it myself, but I have heard of people using it in their African cichlid tanks.
  22. I've never bred the amano shrimp, so I can't help you with your question, but I would definitely love to see photos, a video, or read a write up of how you have done it, if you have time to do.
  23. I would use wonder shell as suggested above, or get some crushed coral and throw some in there.
  24. I would just drain the hose and restart the siphon each time. I use a python system, although I just drain into a floor drain and not use the drain part of the python, and when I am done, I drain the water out, and coil the hose up. I know if there's a time I don't get all the water out of the hose, it will collect in the bottoms of the coils and turn a dark color, so then I run some straight hot water through.
