  1. 1 is Brazilian, the others are from Muttsylvania
  2. Lets play Spoof the Algorithm. There is plenty of room on the sidebar. The logic behind putting product placement at the top of the page eludes me, and the brief period were I was seeing ads on the top and bottom was seriously annoying.
  3. I haven't picked up a real camera in years, so the only thing I can add is: Clean both sides of the glass! The camera sees everything that your eyes ignore. When taking pictures of aquarium fish, or any other subject behind glass, I got better results with an oversized lens shade directly against the glass when possible.
  4. Open the Reply to this topic box, Drag or copy /paste your picture into the gray area next to the paper clip in the bottom of the box: "Drag files here to attach... A thumbnail of your picture should appear.
  5. My favorite for the moment are the Bloodfin Tetras. I'm seriously considering a small group of Embers in the near future. @JamesB mentioned the visual appeal of a big school of Neons. Neons or Cardinals could top my list if I get the planted tank to cooperate.
  6. I'm going with biofilm also. I have a zero tech tank and the film forms a solid sheet across the surface because of zero surface movement. This video might be useful.
  7. I shipped a 2nd. day air package to a customer 30 miles away. the package passed through the same hub twice, and the customer got the package 12 days and 277 miles later. Technology is great when it works. Knowing this, I made my first plant purchase from the Coop last week. We were just emerging from our first ice age event in years, so I was concerned. The plants arrived in Ohio 3 days later and look great. Of course as @Maggiesaid, "keeping them alive in my tank is another story"
  8. The vallaineria was supposed to be my first low-medium light, idiot proof background plant in my 29 also.. I think that sometimes it just doesn't grow in some environments. I have 3 surviving Jungle Val runners that have not grown an inch in years. The parent plants are long gone. One is in its original gravel setting with plenty of ferts and light, but no growth. The second plant is in the same tank, but is free floating. It has grown some growth, probably due to the more intense light. The third plant was moved to pool sand with low light and an occasional root tab. I looks healthier (greener with more roots), but is still less than an inch tall. On the flip side, the single Italian Val purchased in November is thriving. Stick with the root tabs and be patient. It could still happen.
  9. I've got to get a plug in here for the Red Tailed Tinfoil Barb. They are hardy and eat everything. They could get to 12 ". They are an active fish that likes company. The downside would be that: depending on the light, they aren't as colorful as the other fish and tank mates need to be too big to fit in their mouths.
  10. I agree, splinting is the way to go. I personally would opt for epoxy and some kind of solid filler strip or piece of channel. It would be a little easier and cleaner. Part of your center brace function is to support the lids/lights. Whichever method you choose, the repaired brace will be stronger than the original.
  11. If memory serves, There was similar post here some months back about someone buying "Sea Glass" from Amazon. When it arrived it was marked "not for aquarium use". The difference being that real sea glass is naturally tumbled glass, and the craft store variety is often acid etched. Likewise, Some colored gravel is dyed or painted with ??? and intended for non aquarium decoration. Colored aquarium gravel from the LFS is coated with a nontoxic acrylic or epoxy shell.
  12. I have sea shells and egg shell in the HOB and in the tank for the snails. The egg shell gets no special treatment except for a boiling water dip. I don't know if they help, but they don't hurt. The garden eggshells just get ground to dust.
  13. I actually have a top three for various reasons. They are Anacharis, Anubia Nanna Petite, and Hornwort. That list will change depending on how well the newer plants progress. If I had to pick one, my choice would also be Hornwort. The even light green color and fast growth helped to create a free cloud island that would tumble slowly in the output from the HOB. The light diffusion makes for a more natural look in the rest of the tank
  14. This might not be the answer you are looking for, but I have used flat black enamel on foam board, acrylic and Lauan panels. It depended on what I had available that could be cut to fit. I attached them with a spot of hot glue. The advantages were that they could be removed to repaint in seconds, and If I really wanted, I could remove the panel to use the mag float on the back glass. The acrylic panel was the best of the group. If you are painting the outside, paint type doesn't matter. Latex is the least durable, but easiest to remove. It is not recommended for glass.
  15. Darn, I only found a frog in mine!
  16. My earliest memory is a goldfish in a bowl with maybe a rock or some marbles. After that, Mom figured that if we wanted to see fish, we could see them in the pet dept. at Woolworth's. At some point I had to spend a few nights sleeping on a cot in my brother's living room. His hobby at that moment was Neon Tetras. I would watch them glowing in the dimly lit room as long as I could stay awake. That is when I got hooked Not a fish memory, but at age 11 I went on a grand adventure with the neighbors. The deal was that I would ride with them to the lake for the week and they would put me on a bus for the return trip. While there, I discovered freshwater mussels in the lake. I made the 6 hour bus ride home with a 3# coffee can full of water and live mussels on the seat beside me. Unfortunately my first aquarium was still a few years away, and it did not end well for the mussels.
  17. Most of my time here is in the early morning as my morning hours tend to be flexible. Weekends could be anytime.
  18. I have been using UGFs with powerheads for decades, and now use a UGF in the planted tank. Yes there is going to be "gunk" underneath. When moving my 75 gallon, I removed and cleaned only one plate, leaving the other intact. after restarting, a brown cloud blotted out everything. 3 hours later the water was mostly clear. 5 hours later the water was perfect. The new non UGF tank took 1 week to clear up. I prefer using a powerhead over an air pump. There is no way to know how much water an air pump is actually moving thru the filter. The powerheads are quieter and provide greater circulation and oxygenation. You can shorten the lift tube and hide the powerhead behind a plant or rock. They also prevent my Nerites from vacationing in the UGF. The UGF will limit you to a coarse substrate. Dirt and sand will probably clog it. Maintenance is usually no more than a deep gravel vac. If you want to go deeper, a siphon hose in the lift tube or one of the other access points will remove extra gunk, mulm, poo, etc. My planted 29 gallon tank has an air driven UGF and a side mounted HOB. A power head in this tank was too much for the small fish. The HOB provides flow across the tank as well as filtration. I have very hard water, and thanks to the air stones, this is the only tank that I have a problem with scale and mineral buildup on the sides and top.
  19. I hope the LFS is warrantying these fish. The problem is most likely with the LFS. The entire purchase and relocation process is stressful, from the initial netting to the final release. I would eliminate the QT. My acclimatization procedure is to float the fish and store water in the store bag, in the aquarium, slowly adding small amounts of aquarium water. I might stretch this out for up to 1 hr. The water chemistry and temperature will equalize over the time it takes to fill the container, and the other fish will usually try to check out the new comer.
  20. It is hard to go wrong with any of the Tetras. I would suggest a small school of Ember or Bloodfin Tetras. A few SAEs won't hurt either. Any group of active swimmers will dress up a naked tank. In my tanks, the Italian Val seems to be very happy and the Anacharis will put out roots into the water column for addition interest.
  21. I took a leap of faith yesterday and placed my first live plant order for from the coop. Here in SW Ohio, I know from experience that Priority mail doesn't mean much. So my plants my arrive in two days or two weeks.
  22. I had a cat/dog combo for many years. Abbey adopted me and Cinnamon was a rescue. Your photo reminded me that the cat could only get that close when Cinnamon wasn't looking. I think she followed the dog around just to be annoying.
  23. Committed Snowplow to the garden. I'm not sure which ticks me off more: the sudden unexpected passing of the most active algae eating Plecos ever, or as a final act of defiance, dying in the middle of the Anacharis cloud, requiring me to uproot all of it to extract the body.😖
  24. Looking at the before picture, my brother would likely quip: "how 1960 can you get" You've done a really good job on the transformation.
