  1. In this day and age if somebody just does their job it's considered going above and beyond and they might even be heroes for it.
  2. If you get any stem plants like Water Sprite I'd just get the one pot as you can separate them into multiples. Think I got like 4 or 5 out of a pot. You also might end up having to replace some as you learn what you can and can't grow successfully. That can be due to how green your thumb is or the kind of water you have. Unless you're one of those like @Bentley Pascoethen you can grow anything lol.
  3. I use sponge filters on the bottom then some media called biohome ultimate for the rest of the trays. Works good imo. I threw away the carbon that came with my canister. I have plants and use ferts so carbon would just be a problem in that it would suck up the nutrients I want my plants to have.
  4. 1000 subs and 4000 watch hours over the previous 12 months. That's just for the youtube monetization side of things. You see lots of established youtubers/streamers who want to but still aren't sponsored for whatever reason. If I was going to go down that road I'd just focus on making consistent quality content and think long term. I'd focus on one video a week.
  5. I'd count on at least 4-6 plants in each pot. The monte carlo, assuming you're successful with growing it will fill in. So it's more of how much coverage do you want to start out with. I wouldn't get a bunch of pots of any one plant at this stage until you know what you can grow.
  6. I wouldn't do heavy root feeders like swords in a sand substrate. I mean you could but you'll be using lots of root tabs. If I was doing sand I'd concentrate on things like floating plants, anubias, and stem plants that feed mainly from the water column.
  7. Yea I mean I'll pretty much eat anything. I even liked MRE's back in the day. That said I don't see a reason to bring broccoli onto a pizza.
  8. Snails love carrots in my experience. I blanch them and let them cool then put one in each tank. My electric blue acara bumps it and rolls it around a bit when I first put it in but then he leaves it alone and the snails can eat in peace. I also like shrimp king snail stixx and calcium chips for snails. Those are things you can do to target feed snails without the fish eating up everything.
  9. I think so. Your tanks should eventually reach a point where they aren't that labor intensive. You'll find yourself more looking at how the fish are doing rather than worrying about testing every day. I can't remember the last time I tested parameters or changed water other than topping off. Not saying you should never do either of those things. I should probably do a spot check on parameters in the next day or so. When my fish are doing normal fishy things and seem "good" then I know everything is ok in their tank.
  10. Never thought of using those tool chests but like the idea. Have a few old craftsman and some snap-ons plus a harbor freight one. Benefits of having an old hot rodder as a father lol.
  11. I don't follow the inch per gallon rule. Assuming filtration won't be an issue I look at the kind of fish going in. Do they like to do zoomies back and forth all day like rainbowfish? Then I want a longer tank. For angelfish I'd want a tank that is tall as well. I don't like to do the minimum size for anything. Just because a fish "can" go in a certain tank doesn't make it a good fit imo. I could put an oscar in a 20 long and keep up with maintenance. That doesn't mean it will be a happy fish in that tank.
  12. @NathenOInteresting. I have heard of clinics using those "doctor" fish to remove dead skin cells from people. I have no issue with it, I'm just more curious than anything about the setup of a place like that. Like what are the issues you have to deal with, if any, that a normal aquarist wouldn't. I imagine people have clean lower legs before they are allowed to dip in the tanks.
  13. Hopefully it works for you. I don't think mine would tolerate a community. She'd be like "ok who here has read lord of the flies?".
  14. A 10 gallon cube is going to be kind of cramped imo for those 2 fish as adults. It doesn't have the length of the traditional 10 gallon aquarium and even then some people say you should go for a 20 long. If it was a normal 10 gallon and was well taken care of I think it could work if not ideal.
  15. Depending on your state you could get Piranhas. Not sure if they would qualify as "mean" or if they're just voracious eaters. I don't advocate for keeping them personally. I've seen them here locally and they look kind of boring in their own tank.
  16. I mean if you watch a lot of bass tournaments or sushi cooking shows it might freak them out a little.
  17. @HH MorantRural King also carries it if there's any of those nearby. If not then you could look into a different brand called black beauty blasting sand. On their website it looks like they sell it in hardware stores and pipeline supply places. As to grit, 2040 is the most popular one I've seen recommended. The finer stuff gets blown around easily in the tank during water changes and if you have any livestock that mess around in the substrate. 2040 is basically the middle ground between coarse and fine, though I've heard of people using coarser without issue.
  18. @Pattie It's funny I'm pretty computer savvy. I even dual boot arch linux with windows but I'm not phone savvy at all. For uploading pictures what I've been doing is from my Iphone I email the pic to myself. Then I just open it up on the computer and save the pic to the desktop. Then I can just drag it into a post or click the choose files link at the bottom. There might be easier ways but this is how I do it. If I can remember I remove meta data by right clicking the pic and saving a copy without the identifying stuff. Honestly not too worried about that though.
  19. That's when you just send them a private message. I have my fave fish stores and the one they promote is not on the list.
  20. Agreed with above it is what it is. I think if you're savvy enough to have found this forum then you probably already know tons of alternative resources for just about anything or know how to find out. You can always use the IM feature to discuss things prohibited on the forum if you had a specific question.
  21. Always buy 2 QT tanks because one will inevitably become a real tank lol.
  22. Glofish get a bad rap due to being genetically modified. I can completely understand why you would want them in your case though. Honestly I wouldn't fret too much over substrate for corydoras. They aren't the delicate flowers that internet rumor has them out to be. They'll be fine with pretty much anything you'd consider using. I hope you get something nice set up for your son and he enjoys it.
  23. I have a fluval 407 that I fill the top 3 trays with biohome ultimate media. The bottom tray I use the foam filter pads that come with it.
  24. I think it would work for a long time. I'm not sure how it would work out if everything reached their max potential size, but that would be a ways down the road. I feel like if the EBA got to 6 inches and the congos to 3.5 or so then I'd be more comfortable in like a 40 breeder. But maybe that's just me I dunno. Everybody has different comfort levels with tank stocking. I tend to be more conservative with stocking and fear overcrowding even if I had plenty of filtration. I'm thinking more of swimming space.
