How Often do you Feed your Community Tank?
FishyJames replied to O13SC3N3's topic in General Discussion
I feed my fry 2x per day with flake and the full tank 1x day. Some days are heavy and other days are light. I also feed at night after lights off for my pleco and kuhli loaches.- 13 replies

I had a 110 gallon tank with a broken frame. I just put that side to the wall so the tank showed well 🙂. My current tank is a 55 gallon that I removed the top rim without a issue. I don't think the rims are actually doing that much, but this is just my Opinion.

I'm setting up a 29 gallon planted tank. I'm using an under gravel filter and right now I have 40 lbs of eco complete which should give me 2" of substrate. I want to get to 3" and wondering whether to get 20 more pounds of eco complete or get something else to mix in or layer with it. What do you think? I might introduce shrimp in the future if that makes a difference.

My first planted tank... what do you think?
FishyJames replied to Karen B.'s topic in General Discussion
Nice job. -
I would clean the sponge filter after 3 months and if it isn't very dirty I would let it go 6 months. With only one fish and live plants chances are you don't even need that filter....but its nice to get the bubbles.

I was using one large sponge filter in my 55. I put on 2 aquaclear HOB to eliminate the sponge filter. I just wanted the real estate in the tank. So yes, you would be safe.

The dollar per gallon sale at Petco took toll on my wallet today. I now have a 29 gallon tank that I am planning on making a plant only tank. I have used Eco complete with success, but I'm interested in other substrates just to change things up. What substrate would you use and what light would you use if money wasn't an issue?

I'm sure she will be fine. Sounds comical in a way. 😄 -
What cool things are happening in your tanks?
FishyJames replied to FriendlyLoach's topic in General Discussion
Lights are off so the kuhli loaches are spinning in circles. -
Lights out and they come up out of the gravel. They do have a similar body but don't grow any larger. I don't have any snail eaters as I have 4 nerites.

I have a black background. Hides hang on backs, black hoses and algae.

Zoom in and take a look. This is a full sized snail. I have had them for over a year and have never seen one larger than the one in the picture. Have any of you experienced these snails?

Generic vs brand name bleach- Purigen
FishyJames replied to FishyJames's topic in General Discussion
Thanks bleach wizard. -
The last time I regenerated purigen I used "great value" bleach and the purigen only lightened up to about 50% of its original color. I thought I had used up a number of its lives due to the large amount of tannins removed. However, this time I used clorox on the same bag and the color came back to just about original color. I normally think generic products, especially ones with the same ingredients, were fairly equal. I now know when it comes to bleach there is a difference. Both were new jugs of non scented and not "splashless" bleach. Has anybody else noticed this?

Mine were on 10 hours. I was getting too much algae so I just cut back to 8.

Cherry shrimp.

I ran my 55 with one sponge filter powered by a aquaclear powerhead. Air driven should work as well. Many will tell you to run 2 sponges...one on each side.

Platys being bullied by Endlers, don’t know what to do
FishyJames replied to KyleKVK's topic in General Discussion
I'm having the same issue but with my male guppies chasing the female patties. My plants are filling in for hiding places....it helps. -
I had the same thing happen with eco complete in a new tank. It will go away with time.

Co-op sells both, what would you recommend? I have both black and neon tetras and a few guppies and a few platty's. A dozen Cory's clean the bottom.

Merry Christmas everyone!
FishyJames replied to Patrick M. Bodega Aquatics's topic in General Discussion
Merry Christmas. I'm installing a new fine bubble air stone today. I hope the little fishies like it.
