  1. He is about 8 months old... still has some growing to do. He was already about 4" when I got him.
  2. The options would be more like 75g and up, but my personal favorite is this guy..... 😊 I don't feed him guppies or minnows, but I have no doubt if given the option, he would eat them. He tries to eat my head when I bend down near his tank.
  3. I keep nerites with mine and they don't bother them at all. I have seen them eat small pond and ramshorn snails though.
  4. I think if you're willing to observe their behavior, recognize if it's not working, and react accordingly, by all means, experiment. Mix away, learn everything there is to learn, absolutely. I'm not at all against learning and experiencing, it's one of the best things about the hobby. 🙂 But.... spare tank and a backup plan. I'm not a big fan of policing the hobby, which is why this forum is so much more enjoyable than any other I've been a part of in the past. There should be no specific "rules" to fish keeping.
  5. Territorial behavior and level of aggression has a lot to do with whether or not it could work. Individual personality plays a big part as well though. I often keep Central and South American cichlids together. I've had it work for a couple of years and ended up having to separate when it no longer works. A lot of people have issues with Pseudotropheus crabros to the point of having to rehome and warn people away from keeping them whenever they get a chance. That has not been my experience. My Bumblebee cichlid is the most laid back easy going and personable fish in the tank. I know that's not the typical experience and a lot of people end up with psychopathic terrors. It goes back to the "collective experience" that it tends not to work rather than the more rare handful of experiences that do work. Good cichlid keeping advice is to always have a spare tank and a backup plan, regardless of how you choose to mix and match them 😊 You never know when someone is going to decide that they want to be the boss.
  6. I think the opinion, though sometimes strong enough to come across as a rule, to not mix cichlids from different areas comes mostly from bad experiences. In a lot of cases it won't work out. Sometimes it will though, and that's great! Cichlids communicate with eachother is various ways, acoustically, visually, sensory, but the way a mbuna cichlid communicates social status and hierarchy, or displays territorial aggression may differ from the way a Central American cichlid does. Think of it as having fish in a tank that don't speak the same language. Sure, it may work, but there is bound to be some misunderstandings.
  7. @Daniel beat me to it, with a far better explanation. I have no background in botany. I just eat plants. 😊🤭
  8. This is what's usually called "streaming" or "bleeding." The damage to the cells allows gasses to escape quicker. Plants are also able to direct nutrients and minerals to the damaged area, sealing the area off, kind of like cauterizing a wound.
  9. Congrats on all of your babies, how exciting! 🙂 @akconklin said it best with the sponge at the bottom. Aqueon actually has filters like this now specifically for shrimp with a thin sponge covering the slots at the intake, so I don't see restricted flow being an issue with that solution.
  10. I have seen the same bump on my Rainbows, always the bottom lip, always the males. It comes and goes occassionally. I have never treated it because they are always acting fine and it never gets worse and goes away on it's own. I don't know if it's an injury because they like to dart across the tank, but it's never caused any issues.
  11. If you are able to catch it, I would remove it. Aquatic nymphs can cause some issues. Just keep an eye out for more of them. No need to nuke the tank though. Since it's just a quarantine tank, just remove them. Yours looks a lot like the little monster that wiped out a good portion of my shrimp colony awhile back. After I was able to catch it, I found 3 more.
  12. I've been seeing a lot of these "retro" box tv aquariums on FB marketplace lately. They seem interesting.
  13. When even your dog knows you're in trouble for bringing home new tanks.
  14. I use Sera Micron for tiny Rainbows. I also like to sprinkle a little in front of the current for Bamboo shrimp too, they love it.
  15. I don't keep heaters in any of my tanks with shrimp in them. The temperatures fluctuate quite a bit and I've never had an issue. I would love to see how yours turns out. I love the look of nano shrimp bowls and still plan on doing one when I find a large enough bowl.
  16. I use gel super glue most of the time. You can also use thread. I have used both cotton and nylon. Super glue works best for me though.
  17. Bamboo shrimp showing off the fans Black Racer Nerite hitching a ride on a Black Devil
  18. Some of the Xenotoca colony- Humpback Limia, Tequila Splitfins, Ameca Splendens
