  1. I run UV sometimes. If I am running my rack systems as overflow sumps I will usually run 24 watt/70 gph UV and use it to give a small amout of heat to the system combined with the 25 watt water pump the system stays comfortable temperature wise without needing a heater for most of the year up here. I also am currently running a 24 watt 70 gallon per hour flow UV in my 75gallon with my colony of 6 mekong river puffer while they sort out their pecking order. Im not sure the dwell time is enough to kill all bad things but i feel like it probably isnt hurting anything and likely reducing risks of skin issues from scratches and nips.
  2. I'll do my best on that. Already pretty cool to see that behavior .... fry would be a bonus 🤞
  3. Right! Thanks. Looking good so far never spawned puffers before but id say thats a decent sign at least.
  4. Nerms..... My hairy puffers have formed a pair from my 3 in my "guesstimation". Color changes and heavy, what i am assuming, can only be pre-spawning behaviors and courtship. Im so pumped to see the process i started in 2018 possibly result in fry i figured i would share witth the crew. So awesome just to get a pair formed and displaying like that ive been updating the videos all day. Lol
  5. Amazon Frogbit is excellent and for me takes off in all tanks good roots for cover etc. Leaves are good size and do not choke off surface gas exchange very easily. Red root floater is also pretty great but is hit or miss in my tanks havent figured it out yet
  6. Very interesting. I look forward to seeing the update. More of an observation than anything. I thought it was enough change in my system to share.
  7. I have never had any in a tank but found this interesting to research online a bit. I am curious to see if anyone here has any direct experience with theses. It seems like they are non-blood sucking carnivorous species of toothless leech. I would assume based on the labratory notes for care found that any worm, snail, possibly clam, and any dead meaty food might be consumed or attempted to be consumed by them. Small fish might be at risk while sleeping to some small degree but without teeth I assume they are basically sucking up meaty food that fits in their mouth. Id bet goldfish or other fish would eat them if they happened to get one in their mouth. If it were me I might experiment with them and post my findings for future reference. Full disclaimer no personal experience but based answers off of the limited research found : are they harmful to adult snails? Are they harmful to young fish?Id guess possibly. (Maybe put one in a collection container, bucket, etc with a live snail and young fish and observe) Will my adult fancy goldfish slurp them all up? Might do so unintentionally but i feel lile goldfish eat everything Are they dangerous to asian clams? Possibly Are they detrivors? They seem to be pure carnivore Do they have benefits? My guess is similar to snails these clean up dead or dying meaty foods Are they worth trying to eliminate? Id bet thats easier said then done in a 270 They must fill a nitche in your current system balance. Its interesting to hear about them. I would think that most fish, crayfish, etc would eat toothless leeches since they are basically a meat disks. Care document https://sites.google.com/site/helobdellaprotocols/leech-care
  8. I havent noticed the belly on the B.Ram females. Minus my females being a little smaller in size, the tube was really the only difference i noticed. Female's tube pretty square on conditioned female more pointy to rear on males.
  9. The fry seemed good to me until they were not. My first ram attempt. Adults look great though I figure a matter of time until next hopefully longer learning experience.
  10. Id go with the Bolivian Rams back in May. Paired off spawned on back of a coconut hut, fry hatched and were free swimming for 2 weeks or so theb gone. Im thinking should have pulled them at 1 week and done suspended fry food. And some vinegar eels before getting to BBS and everything after than. Lesson learned for next try
  11. A bit old but fihured id post my observations for the group .... the original med trio was something i used everytime. The paracleanse is a little different in my system than the original it replaced but valuable. I just checked my paracleanse side effects in real time. I used it on my left side optional sump rack system with some wild caught new arrivals to the room. The right side rack has same options, substrate, effective fishload, plant load, and seasoning. Both sides are independent but essentially identical systems Tested both with coop strips at same time photo of tests are 60 seconds horizontal post 3 second dip (per the directions). Left side strip with paracleanse (day 3 dose)right side strip without. The label warning notes it can mess up the beneficial bacteria and could cause ammonia poisoning in some circumstances if not mitigated. My results show an 80ppm KH increase and ph increase of 0.6 +/- . I believe paracleanse can negatively affect beneficial bacteria and does for me. I may use the Fritz ACCR to prevent ammonia poisoning while treating paracleanse on future doses as it suggests. For me + 80 KH, a 0.6 PH increase, BB die off, and possible ammonia issues are a reality for paracleanse but it works for what it does. Anyone know if Fritz ACCR is able to be used with the full trio without impacting the other two meds involved ( paracleanse specifically notes it is safe with it)?
  12. I would like a digital breeding certificate for those who submit a BAP form photos to the club with a paper certificate etc at some level.
  13. i wonder if you could like flexpaint or similar all sides of the shelving and make the particle board shelf "waterproof". No idea if it would work but it seems possible theoretically. That may be a decent route to avoid spending your life savings on plywood.
  14. I didn't see anything against putting this one in here in the guidelines but if it is I do apologize; Its pretty much a COOP fishroom all the plants and planters, easy green, dry foods and the towel on the TV as an easter egg. I figured I would share my link with the fish family it was a really fun time up here on the mountain and you can see what my current set ups are. I had no idea anyone would want to visit my room and was humbled to be asked. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to best collect the floating African Butterfly Fish eggs once we get to breeding sizes in the colony? I have recently found a few articles that the Hairy puffers cave spawn and exhibit parental care normally so am less concerned about getting from egg to free swimming with them. v/r Matt
  15. Thanks. Good to know on that. The fry seem to be well shaped so far but im a B-Ram newbie. Should be a fun first month of learning them in my setup.
  16. Interesting that it is just the one species. Were there other fish in the tank that were bothering the CPD? If I had that situation I would try and change any filtration floss etc out and water change, test the water, and change out the food if it was a concern to me. In my experience you could potentially introduce a substance from your skin onto something you touch. Ive usually had slow die off of one type of fish either be from issues with water parameter /conditions they were more sensitive to or stress from another fish.
  17. Tried Bolivian Rams this month with a group of 6. Pair formed pretty much immediately and fry now free swimming. My plan was to leave them for a month or two, similar to the regani pike spawn, for benefits of parents care and assistance. Anyone have experience with raising these? Seem to be feeding on mulm, first bites, coop fry food, and possibly BBS 1 week past free swimming.
  18. Cool stuff. Did you see a higher hatch rate / lower fungus rate by leaving them in the Victoria green than you would otherwise expect? Congrats
  19. This is the most flavorful "rabbit hole" if jumped down in quite a while. You can do nearly anything with butter, a bottle of Tabasco, duck tape and paracord.
  20. Anyone have any experience using trees for structure in tank? I have some dead aspens 10-12" diameter in the yard and was considering taking a 2-4' section for a pleco habitat with holes cored out along its length. Other choices are pine but those are pretty green and I assume less safe with the resins. Wooded 1.5 acre lot we have alot of options. Any suggestions much appreciated. Vr Matt
  21. Thanks kindly. I would agree and I believe these fry nibbled intermittently at the slime coat of the parents for the first 7 days or so which I had not expected. They have been a pretty fun few months of learning so far. I definitely could end up with some extras in need of a home on the standard online routes in the next month or so. The pair are chasing fry out of the area and are sporadically defending caves again so I imagine once I manage to get the remaining fry out the parents will start again. The forum rule of "No selling or giving away aquarium related supplies or animals" would apply for here. I do hope the updates and photos help others if they try breeding this fun species.
  22. I did a pre storm water change, tank temperature Slight raise and added more tanins on a 50 gallon tank reset. Primarily seeing a ton of breeding from khuli loaches in floating plants. The tank is 50 gallon higher flow with colony of L169 candy Stripe pleco / colony of L129 Columbian Zebra / colony of 12 Dwarf chain loaches. My question is I fed frozen tubifex for the first time post reset and they really lost their minds to me this has the look of breeding behavior with the faded colors being the larger loaches and the thinner loaches being highly defined in stripes. Anyone have any thoughts?
  23. Update day 70: fry now pretty sizable 1/2" smallest fry (moved with first batch)up to 2.5" for most moved after day 45. Adult female regani reddened up and began chasing some remaining fry from cave it seems possible that those are adolescent females. It definitely has the appearance of her clearing out the adolescents for a new batch of fry. Both adults are a little combative intermittently but not like they were when driving the other adult pair from the tank 2 years ago . I will change my process for next round and leave the fry in with parents for 45 and up to 60 days. That does seem to teach them how to eat a varied diet, act a little more like the adults, and put on size faster. Vr Matt
