  1. Keeping an eye on this thread. I'd really love to see in my goldfish pond and guppy tub. I have so much plant growth I can barely see under the surface without moving a lot of plants.
  2. Nice healthy looking group. I hope Derpy made it ok ... I have to get my BBS system back up and running. My CPDs are maturing but still seem too small to breed. They are coloring up nice though. The new tank layout looks quite impressive with the stones. Post some updates when you get it all finished.
  3. Welcome to the forum! This is something your daughter will remember forever, very cool.
  4. Welcome to the forum and very nice looking tank! The background goes really well with the scape.
  5. I have a love/hate relationship with it. It sucks up nitrates like crazy, but tank maintenance is a hassle because it sticks to everything, and can clog your filters pretty quick. My shrimp and guppies love it, as do my goldfish. I feed a lot of it to the goldfish pond. I have a gallon freezer bag full of it currently and will be making fish food out of it soon.
  6. I use black construction paper on the backs of some of my tanks and no background on others. I like the idea of black vinyl, won't discolor if it gets wet. I have in the past painted the back black which I really liked, just never got around to it before I set up my larger tanks. I really like the concept of temporary backgrounds so I can change them out if I change my mind about it later.
  7. That fancy towel makes a really good photo backdrop ! 🙂 I have two of those towels and love them!
  8. Looking forward to seeing how this turns out!
  9. Welcome to the forums! I got back in to the hobby at the beginning of Covid. I'm now up to 8 tanks, not including a goldfish pond and guppy tub outside. The tanks multiply pretty fast 🙂
  10. one of my anubias is flowering, had no clue they could do this. Also have a guest in my guppy tub out back 🙂
  11. I have a large HOB on my 75 and the output flow if pretty high. I just cut the side of a juice bottle and put a notch in the top to hang over the output. It diffuses the output and the otos like to surf in there once in a while. I'll try and add images later. I did something similar on one of my 55 gallon tanks as well.
  12. Welcome to the forums and grats on the fish room expansion approval 🙂
  13. Welcome to the forum! Add a picture or two of your tanks if you can.
  14. Some of the low grade ones are male. They don't typically get as solid, or deep red as the females. Since you got them from the LFS, there's no way to know the lineage or genetics. Even a really good line of shrimp can throw lower grades. If you want to keep the quality high in your colony, the best way is to do what you already mentioned. Cull the traits you don't want. I have a 75 gallon that gets my culls. It's like a shrimp rainbow 🙂
  15. Thinking of ordering some myself, but not sure how the 100+ temps in eastern Washington, Oregon, and Idaho (home), will treat the fishies..
  16. wow, very impressed with everyone's pictures! I need to set up my DX40 with my tripod, or greatly improve my phone camera skills 🙂 I've noticed my male Emperors have blue eyes whereas the females are green.. anyone else have emperors and seen this? My guppy strain and Boris the Koi Betta, wife took these, she's better than I am with the phone.
  17. Most fish will self regulate by moving up and down in the water column to suit their needs. Seasonal temperature fluctuations are usually so slow and gradual that most non-tropical fish can adapt. I only have a surface heater on my pond so that the entire thing doesn't freeze over. That'd block out any gas exchanges and kill the fish.
  18. Pond is looking good, thanks for the updates! I was surprised at how fast my lily took over as well. They sure do provide good surface cover!
  19. I wouldn't think a reptile heater would work, too great a risk of electrical shock/short.. You'd need something made for heating water that can withstand freezing temps, if that's what you have in your area. If anyone here uses something besides a stock tank heater update on here with what you use. I have 2 feeder goldfish in my pond. they were an inch long when I got them and are now maybe 8 inches long? I wouldn't put anymore in there. With my plant pots in there and the filter/pump, I'd say I'm down to about 80 or so gallons of swimming room. You could have a boatload of ricefish in something like your 125m maybe only 3 or 4 goldfish, remember they get huge. Disclaimer, I am by no means a pond expert and this one I have only had for a few years.
  20. Welcome to the forum. Wow, pretty efficient rack system. Looks like you might have to expand your fish room 🙂
  21. This is what I use. Floats on top and keeps it from freezing completely over. You can get it on Amazon - https://www.amazon.com/FLOATING-POND-ICER-WATT-HEATER-POND/dp/B00JI0O6YY/ref=sr_1_58?dchild=1&keywords=pond+heater&qid=1626711413&sr=8-58 This is really more for stock ponds or something with a good amount of surface area. Keep in mind, the size of your heater and how long it has to stay on could really increase your electric bill...
  22. I have a lily in there now and it's taking over, but the water lettuce is holding it's own. This was in the spring This is current. I had to add some burlap for shade. All the local places here in the valley are completely out of shade cloth. a solid month of over 100 degrees has been brutal...
  23. Not sure about ricefish but goldffish can overwinter in some pretty extreme temps. Mine are in an above ground pond in Idaho and we get below 0f temps here. My pond completely freezes over and they go to the bottom and basically go dormant. I do have a pond surface heater to keep the ice from completely covering the top, so they gas gas exchange. I'd think an in-ground pond would be better just for insulating and water temp stability. I can't do that on mine because I want to see my cool cast iron claw foot tub 🙂
  24. I use a small stool. I still end up almost to my armpits, depending on what part of the tank I'm working on. There's a really cool article by Bill Smith on here for a root tab tool. I still need to make one of these! https://forum.aquariumcoop.com/topic/554-pex-piller-quick-and-easy-diy-root-tab-injector- -substrate-inserter-pill-bottom-release-for-under-10/?tab=comments#comment-3945
