  1. Just got my order of Ocean Nutrition instant baby brine shrimp in a jar from the coop and my baby rasboras went nuts! They're going to get this every day for one of their feedings. I'm starting a hatchery soon.
  2. Some of my twelve baby dwarf emerald rasboras in quarantine. I haven't been able to snap a pick of them all together yet bit got instant baby brine coming from the coop so maybe can get a wide shot then.
  3. I know nothing except that I cycled my tank w plants and ammonia and got several nitrate spikes requiring water changes. I figured my numerous half dead plants were the culprit.
  4. I am looking at mid-top level. I'll have 6 cory cats at the bottom. Any size as long as its pretry, peaceful, likes low 70s for water temp, and won't breed. I like the idea of a female betta sorority!
  5. Gouramis seem to like it alot warmer (80-ish) than my new emerald babies (70-75), so I'm considering something more compatible as a centerpiece. What about 4 female betta fish? Tank seems kind of big (45 gal) for just one male, and the females are also quite striking to me! Suggestions/advice welcome!
  6. My val died, and its spot in the corner is bare. 🙁 On the plus side my water sprite is going nuts and I already cut off one "runner" (not sure of technical name but it had its own roots) to sacrifice in my quarantine tank and another runner is ready to be cut when the time comes. And all 12 of my baby dwarf emerald rasboras made it thru the night! Here's the tiniest one, a bit worrisome he (?) seems to stay off by himself alot, but joins the group occasionally.
  7. Found my ammonia & nitrites at 0ppm, nitrates <40ppm. Did a 25% water change and nitrates now 20. Tank is now cycled!! Went to LFS and they're out of harlequin rasboras. Big time bummer. LFS has great supply of frozen food though. Got flakes and pellets and a few other things coming from aquariumcoop. Change of plans. I saw some adorable young emerald dwarf rasboras (danio erythromcron). I got twelve. They're so tiny and adorable! I have them in my quarantine tank (5 gal mini-bow). I had to add a little baking soda to the tank while they were floating in the bag as my pH is too low for them (they prefer over 7). Here are a couple of my new babies.

  9. I ordered a few things yesterday at 3:30 pm EDT. At 6pm I forgot I hadn't ordered a sponge filter, air stone, and nano pump. But before I could start an email "hello, can I add to my order...", I received the shipped notice!! That's never happened 2 1/2 hours after ordering. Insane! Question about sponge filter: I currently have a Marineland biowheel which has a charcoal filter. I want to add the sponge now for both air and extra bacteria, and as a safety in case of a power outtage, but could I remove the Marineland after a few weeks? If so, how is chemical filtration accomplished? Thanks!
  10. It sounds like what I read about pearl gouramis, only the opposite. The male guards the eggs and viciously attacks the female or any fish that comes too close.
  11. Yes, I can already see a 10 or 20 gallon in my future. Lol.
  12. Thank you! Yes, I have several rocks in the tank (CaribSea Exotica). I also have a little trouble with the color change on the nitrates (same reason). I'm not shooting for a specific water hardness/pH as I am new to the hobby, just want to make sure what I have is in the comfortable range for my soon-to-be fish. I plan on doing a 15-20% water change weekly (45 gal tank) to keep the numbers from swinging too much. I really appreciate your detailed response!
  13. I bought the API testing kit and tested both aquarium water and tap. I'm a little confused! Tap: gH 71.6 ppm (4 drops), kH 125.3 ppm (7 drops) Tank: gH and kH both 89.5 ppm (5 drops ea) Is it normal for one to go up and the other down? Also I'm having trouble with the subjective term "bright yellow". Out of the tap it was what I'd call "pale" blue, but turned pale green, then pale yellow, but not what I'd call "bright" yellow for a cpl more drops. Out of tank it was never blue at all. I read the article on it and am still confused. Pale and bright are somewhat subjective terms and I want to make sure I'm measuring correctly. My fish will be harlequin rasboras, pearl gouramis and corydoras paleatus. pH out of the tap is about 6.8, after two weeks aged it falls to 6.6, in aquarium with driftwood it's 6.4. Still fishless cycling, ammonia 1-2ppm, NO2 just barely over 0, NO3 40+. Thanks for any advice!
  14. I am using Dr. Tim's ammonium chloride solution for cycling my tank. Be sure not to use regular household ammonia as it contain detergents.
  15. This is King, my largest pest snail at approx. 1/4". He's also a cannibal, having chowed down on at least 2 of his tankmates.
  16. My nitrates were so high I had to do a water change bc the cycle stalled! That and I'm adding fertilizer must be why.
  17. I have a new tank doing fishless cycling. I filled it on Sept 12, and have had this water sprite in there for about 3 weeks. It started out about 12" tall and maybe 5" wide. I had it floating until I bought some red root and they were getting stuck together, and it was growing too big. So I planted it in the back. It is now almost 20" tall and over 8" wide in three weeks!! I'm not a visual artist nor anything other than pure newbie on aquatic plants and aquarium design, but here's what I have. Some plants took a big hit during shipment (many arrived dead), and I've already removed several that didn't bounce back. Some still recovering. I think I need to do some trimming. Air stone is temporary to help the bacteria until I can get a control valve bc it's too forceful. (FYI the fake plants sitting on the decoration are going to be used for my quarantine tank when I get my fish). I cannot wait for fish!! I feel like a kid waiting for my birthday to come.
  18. These snails are entertaining at times, actually. I want fish so bad but still have a few more days to go, so I'm stuck with my snails for now. The biggest one (the cannibal) was named King, tho a couple more have grown and now I can't tell who is King. I'm going to keep them until they become a problem. I think I'd have a huge algea problem right now without them.
  19. I have no idea of the worm but the snails are very interesting! I only have pond snails in mine (no fish yet) and they're my only source of aquatic entertainment right now.
  20. Hi BreeMarie, I read your first post a few days ago, and was very sorry to see that your male died. (Assuming male since he was so much more colorful). I'm a fish newbie, in the last few days of fishless cycling with my second aquarium (45-gal) (first one, 10-gal, being many years ago). I originally wanted rasboras and powder blue dwarf gouramis - so gorgeous - but heard Cory discuss how the males can be pretty aggressive. Other info online also suggests that, and someone mentioned inbreeding as a possible reason why they may be susceptible to disease. I've changed my mind after going to my LFS and seeing pearl gouramis (and still love the harlequin rasboras). The question of salt use has been very puzzling to me, bc of many opinions, but its use seems more prevalent with live-bearers. I also have many plants that were not cheap, so I don't want to harm them either. I wish you the best of luck with your remaining gourami. 💙
  21. Gifs of various parts of this incident. The black line is some sort of discharge from the victim. I missed that part getting a chair bc i couldn't hold it steady.
  22. Hello! I have heard that gouramis tend to eat dwarf shrimp, but your shrimp look great! I'm cycling my tank right now (no fish) and planning on getting pearl gouramis as my centerpiece fish. I probably have way too many plants in my 45-gal tank (2/3 of top is covered in numerous baby floating plants (red root and salvinia minima), and about 20 various plants are in the gravel) but they're all still pretty small (except the water sprite which grows extremely fast - it's already 18" tall) and I'm an aquatic plant newby so figured I'd probably kill some. I know the fish will love the plants.
  23. Fishless cycling update: this am, ammonia <2 ppm (w/daily ammonia dosing), nitrates still 40-80. Nitrites fell drastically from ~5 ppm yesterday to .25 ppm today, and I'm so happy! Maybe only a few more days before the ammonia-nitrite crash to zero. Snail update: I either have an algea-eating assassin snail who somehow was in the plants I purchased (doubtful), or I have a regular trumpet snail who was so hungry he attacked and ate one of his (now several) tankmates. I witnessed and recorded it. I have no idea how to upload a video but if there's a way to clip some screenshots from the video I will try to do that. This guy saw the smaller one, came upon and grabbed hold. At first I though they were mating, but it soon became obvious thats not what it was. I recorded 3 separate vids over about 5 minutes. I guess if there's not enough algea, they resort to canabalism. Any snail experts? Here are pics of them a couple days before. First one is the victim. He looks bigger in the pic, but was about 2/3 the size of the second one.
