I’d be inclined to clip off the left leaf. It’s going to take a little time, but I think it’ll recover. The new shoot is a good sign.

New fish for the week of 3/22-3/28
Patrick_G replied to Robert's topic in Edmonds Washington Retail Store Forum
How much are the Amazon Puffers? Are they still in Quarantine? -
It looks really great. Some Otocinclus and Amano Shrimp will help with the algae I think.
-
I would start with a good general fertilizer like Easy Green. Wait a few weeks and look for shoots coming out of the rhizome. If the current leave turn black you can trim them off to allow the plant to put energy into the new growth.

The big box has cheap tanks, but it’s worth a trip to a LFS to check out options. Call around first because some shops lean more towards fish/plants and some have more tanks and equipment.

I like all the ideas posted and I’ll add two more. How about a second circulation head to stir things up and get the mulm headed to the filter? Some Corys might also accomplish the same thing. I can empathize with this situation, I just spent about 20min using airline tubing to siphon detritus out of my little Nano shrimp tank.
-
I think I would go with a Fluval 407 canister. That way you get circulation and filtration in one unit. You can get one for $150 right now.
-
I think there’s two versions. The one I have would be difficult to use the long end of the bracket. I agree with the potential light intensity of this thing! On 100% it’s a mini sun.
-
Yes it is expensive! I went to the Aquarium Coop retail store to get a light and they recommended the Nano without hesitation. I was surprised to be buying a light that cost more than the tank, but I’m very happy with it. The app has helped me shorten the learning curve when balancing my tank.
-
I agree, and I think one could also add a piece of bar stock to the end of the existing bracket. I’m also hopeful that they’ll introduce a spotlight type with the same network capability as the current 3.0 series.
-
The Fluval Nano is great and the networked app control sets light period, spectrum and duration. The negative is that It has a very short mounting bracket so it’s impossible to center it on a tank that’s more than about 10” wide. I have a 14” cube and it delivers uneven lighting from front to back. If the mount was higher and longer it would be perfect.

Java Ferns New Growth Seems Odd? Any Thoughts On Why?
Patrick_G replied to Bosco's topic in General Discussion
The baby leaves on all my Java Ferns start out similar and then get more opaque as they grow. -
I would do water changes frequently over the next two weeks until your ammonia and nitrite levels reach 0.
-
Do you have a clean up crew? Otocinclus catfish and Amano shrimp are great at eating algae.
-
I really like their pattern. The black stand out.

An added note on chlorine tests. I use tetra strips and cannot measure any chlorine in my tap water. A call to my water co reveled that in my area water at the tap usually measures at .3-.4 ppm. I guess it to low for the strips to measure but it’s still not good for the fish and I’ll keep using conditioner.

I need some help unpacking the wide world of pond filtration
Patrick_G replied to Collin's topic in General Discussion
I use a home made box filter. The water stays clear and the Nitrates are low. Yours will be 719 gallons so a good off the shelf solution might be an Oase UVC 1000. It’s rated up to 1000g and had UV built in. Runs about $150. Maybe you could use you current pond as a planted bog filter inline with the Oase. -
Same issue for me

Those tanks look so cool but you don’t have much horizontal swimming room. I’d go for a school of something small like Ember Tetras and then a nice Betta as a feature.

@gogomarigo Congrats, they’re my favorite nano fish so far. We keep one in a 11 gal and love trying to find him. He loves flake food and loach pellets and comes out at feeding time.

Plumbing/auto water change general questions
Patrick_G replied to Patrick_G's topic in General Discussion
Here’s what I’m currently thinking of doing: - 1” drilled overflow with strainer plumbed into my sink drain. - pressure reduced fill line with drip emitter. -daily water conditioner based on how much water gets changed. My tap water has .3-.4 ppm chlorine.- 4 replies
