  1. Here what I might try: - Remove Anibias from the gravel - Reduce light intensity - Easy carbon according to label - Add more fast growing stem plants
  2. I’m still a beginner at planted aquariums but I’m an experienced gardener. When I approach a new property I like to plant lots of different plants to see what grows well and what I like to grow. I’ll then move towards more cohesive, massed plantings of those plants.
  3. -Ludwigia repens -Plant weights -Root Tabs for the rooted plants, I think Fluval Stratum is largely inert so extra nutrients will help.
  4. Your selection looks good but I think it might look a little sparse in the big 120g tank. Some of the faster growing stem plants folks have already mentioned might help fill the space, and they tend to be less expensive too.
  5. My patio pond filter is just a plastic box with some no commercial aquarium media, just some gravel and 3M pads. I had laying around. I intended it to be temporary but it’s worked great and has kept 100 gallons clean for about a year now.
  6. My shrimp are in two three gallon cubes. It works but I spend a lot of time trying to keep things stable including doing drip top offs. I think 5+ gallon would be much easier.
  7. In 5th grade I had 5-6 guppies in a 10 gallon on my night stand. I remember waking up one morning and thinking I was dreaming because suddenly there was 10 guppies! In high school my Mom volunteered at the national aquarium. Her friend, one of the biologists, had an over abundance of a rare African Cichlid, and gave me some to raise.
  8. I’d want more a a cleanup crew so a school of Corys and some Otocinclus or Siamese Algae Eaters.
  9. I have mystery snails in four rimless open tanks and no escapes, but I keep the level a little low just in case.
  10. It’s a bit hard to tell from the pic, are the leaves just brown or are they wasting away? I have a Windelov that started turning brown. I waited until it sent out some new leaves, then cut off the worst of the brown leaves. It’s been about two months and it’s just about fully recovered.
  11. My eyes are also not so great. Without glasses I’d have to be right next to the glass to see the Endlers or Shrimp. I think I’d want something high contrast. The honey Gouramis sound great, and some Albino Corys would really contrast with the black substrate. Another option would be a nice bright Betta
  12. I used to have two small in ground ponds in a similar configuration. It worked great. For filtration I would just add media to the pump enclosure.
  13. I agree with FriendlyLoach, it can be done inexpensively. Made a 100gal patio pond with a diy cedar planter lined with a pond liner. The filter is also diy and seems very effective. This year I’ll probably be upgrading to a 380 gal metal stock tank.
  14. I think Scarlet Badis are intriguing. I bet two Sparkling Gouramis and two Scarlet Badis would be compatible.
  15. That’ll be fun. It looks like full sun, will you run a UV?
  16. This year I’ve had two frogs jump out of the tank, we found one body in a closet about 15’ from the tank and never found the other.
  17. I’ll second the goldfish recommendation. Commons, Sarasa Comets and Shubunkins are all reallly fun and interactive, but my Shubunkin is the most like a little dog. She’s always checking us out and hoping for a treat. If you’re ready for next level care requirements then go for a puffer.
  18. I’d say the plants in your pic look pretty good. A little trimming a a little time will sort things out
  19. Your layout is really nice. I wonder if the Java ferns are just suffering a bit after the algae. I would be inclined to cut out the worst looking leaves and see how the new growth comes in.
  20. I hadn’t planned on new shrimp before I had this problem sorted but I ended up bringing home two berried females yesterday. I decided to do some water changes before adding them to get things closer to accepted cherry shrimp parameters. I took out about 50% then dripped in newly conditioned water over many hours. This morning I did the same thing and finally got to a 9 gh. I then drip acclimated the new shrimp over a couple hours. Time will tell, but both the newly added and the established shrimp look good. No erratic swimming, just peacefully grazing on some moss.
  21. I bought this plant yesterday and can’t remember what it is. I think it’s Rotala Indica but I’m not sure. The one on the left
  22. I also like the look of Black Diamond but have soft water. As I build out my new 75gal I’m considering adding filter bags of crushed coral under the aquascape and capping with the BDS. Any thoughts on this method?
  23. If you’re impatient you can add lots of plants and do frequent water changes to help keep toxic levels low while the tank cycles.
