For organic topsoil tanks, Diana Walstad recommends gravel caps. I agree, because coarse media provides an easier path for organics to rejoin the substrate. I have been working on removing sand in my aquariums, when possible.

For my new order, where should I plant the baby tears in this tank?

My latest order comes with a cherry shrimp!

With Yo-yo loaches and similar fish, I always make sure to serve a buffet, so the tank-mates can focus on floating food, while they scour the substrate for sinking food. Spare snails go to the Yo-yo too.

I love taking field trips at my job to visit our schools in the Mad River valley, which is home to Sugarbush and Mad River Glen. With mountains, you get rivers. This is one side of a road in Warren: And this is the other side: I love living and working in Vermont. I am always connected to nature!

Non fishy fish things - show your inventive side
Streetwise replied to Flumpweesel's topic in General Discussion
@Flumpweesel, I have a dream of setting up an aquarium in my folks’ fieldstone fireplace, using the ash dump to route stuff to the basement. Your setup looks cool! On another note, I tried something different when adding water after a tank move. I just covered all the substrate and existing plants (not a lot), with paper towels. I didn’t stir anything up when pouring. Aquarium Co-Op plant bags can also be reused as media bags. If you have one laying around, run water through it under the faucet, and you will be amazed at the water flow it allows. -
I left space for new plants. I plan to add neocaridina.

You could also try a pair of nano sponge filters if they are easier to hide.

Ever find something unexpected floating in your aquarium?
Streetwise replied to tnnlynch's topic in General Discussion
I should add this to the feline thread, but I heard a chirp on the way to bed, exhausted. I knew it was probably a chipmunk, but I wasn’t going to search for animals at the time. The next morning it woke me up, and I figured my cat had cornered it. It was swimming in a water change bucket, exhausted, with my cat watching. I brought it outside, and locked the window for an hour to give it a head start. Another time, I caught this on camera: -
Guppies keep swimming into CO2 Drop Checker
Streetwise replied to Marnol D's topic in General Discussion
I have only briefly dabbled in CO2. @Mmiller2001 runs CO2. -
@Patrick_G, I have had success with various cryptocoryne, anubias, moss, and ferns in my water. I will try to document the growth. The baby tears are new to me!

This is cool. I am thinking about some ideas, and will edit this post. Don’t quote me.

I mostly run filters to move water, and rely on plants and bacteria to do the biological work. Some fish really like to live in the flow.

@ChemBob, this is the same tank, moved about 32 miles, with new water. These fish started in outdoor tubs, then a year inside there, and now here. I have good water at both locations, so I just gave it a six hour spin-up before dropping the fish. I did move the HoB from the 16 bow just to collect floating bits in foam.

Fishless cycling water change/wonky fishless cycle?
Streetwise replied to rnn's topic in Introductions & Greetings
It sounds like your tank is seasoned and balanced. You should be able to be very patient with changes. -
@Fergranadino, I haven’t compared all the HoB filters, as I have very specific criteria. I don’t really rely on filters as much as plants.
