  1. This was how they responded when returning to their tank after the move. I can’t wait to get more plants!
  2. Thanks for the support, friends! My dad is doing a good job taking care of her, but he is even older, so this situation will definitely be evolving. I’m an only child, and currently alone. I do have local cousins who have dealt with aging parents all the way, and one is a doctor. I can handle the emotional swings, but I anticipate administrative challenges in the future. I am taking over more accounts for various stuff, but I don’t have any template. On another note, @Atitagain, my dad said he picked up those slate pieces for table tops when getting a very thick slice for under a wood stove, and he thinks that they cut them down on-site. I’m not sure. In my consulting days, this was one of my clients. They show a roofing photo with large slate tiles: https://vermontslateco.com
  3. @Atitagain, I believe my dad had those pieces of slate on the top of old Singer peddle-drive sewing machine bases, to protect the wood from houseplants. Since both pieces were the same size, I did a little research. Vermont is a long-standing producer of slate tiles for roofing and other purposes.
  4. I only like symmetrical HoBs. I picked this one:
  5. I have learned not to be that clever while renting. Moving this 20 gallon refreshed my memory of the effort of moving. I had to get help on each end of the drive because of all the substrate. I actually walked through a box store on my way down, just to remind myself of all the large tanks that would be a pain to move. I also wanted to be sure that I didn’t want to spend on a stand.
  6. I could move a pair of picos to bookend my bow. This would be easier than extending. Houseplants would fit nicely. This might even be the same furniture from my childhood 20H. It certainly has all the signs of water damage. Despite the circumstances, this is getting me out of an aquarium funk. I am not just feeding and topping off.
  7. Can I please get some physical setup opinions? I moved a 20H from my folks’ house, and put it on the living room dresser where I had three 3.5 gallon tanks and a brine shrimp hatchery. I had to move two of those things, so this is temporary. The bureau is not wide enough for one pico per side. I am thinking of centering the 20H alone, or sliding it into the right corner, with a pico or a houseplant on the left.
  8. I broke down the tank today and moved it to my apartment. My mom didn’t really understand what was going on, asking why this was happening, even though she has been insisting that it needs to go. My dad rearranged things to be like they used to, and reports that she is happy with the situation now. I still have to get the three tubs out of the basement, but those are not really in her line-of-sight. I guess I finally did a water change this year, and the first for this tank. I will probably remove the Amazon sword and place a plant order. I ended up using the plants from up the thread in other tanks.
  9. @PineSong, I now have to move this tank. Dementia is real.
  10. @Ken, it looks like more formatting options are available on a computer than on my iPhone.
  11. My father had a theory about boats. You want the mast grounded to the keel in saltwater, but not in freshwater. We had neighboring boats hit on Lake Champlain, with fried electronics, and pinhole hull burns, that were grounded. We escaped. I have felt Saint Elmo’s Fire through a carbon fiber mast, which is very conductive.
  12. Titanium is one of the best metals for medical and marine usage. I detected a broken heater by getting a shock. I would prefer a shutdown with an alert vs just draining stray current to make it work.
  13. @Atitagain, remind us where you are again, regarding trees.
  14. This is not appropriate for all tanks, but this was my last sponge cleaning. I just squeezed them out in the aquarium to get the water moving a bit more. I just can’t bear giving away plant nutrients. I do add excellent water with every top-off.
  15. Looking good! You could keep a bucket of leaves 🍁 with an air stone, and keep topping off your tank with it.
  16. A garden designed for pollinators! @Daniel https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2021/nov/03/art-for-bees-mad-looking-installation-suits-pollinators-tastes They even have an app for you to design your own: https://pollinator.art
  17. @Brandy is correct that I did a soak test with maple leaves. I saw pH go down, and I used some of the water, but I didn't really need to make more, so I put the buckets away. In most of my tanks, I get tannins from soil and wood, and the effects are slow.
  18. I have had to use sandpaper on my hands to get fiberglass and carbon fiber splinters out. I pay others for my boat repairs so that I don’t have to touch either unless coated with epoxy or some other resin.
  19. pH changes from tannins are in proportion to tannin elements. I would not consider a pH crash a risk from natural sources.
