Snail looks weird… what should I do?
Chick-In-Of-TheSea replied to Sherry's topic in General Discussion
The tank is looking nice @Sherry! Are you using dirt in your planters? If so, just be careful not to disrupt that; you don't want that dirt to get up into the water column - so if a plant dies at any point, just take the whole pot out rather than pulling the plant. -
I'm at about 12 years w/ the 29g. I don't know of any liquid that would eliminate nitrates. Cory says on his nitrogen cycle video that water changes or plants are the only things that remove it. I have used nitra-zorb in the past which works wonders. It's a pouch of filter media. It has to be recharged every so often by soaking it in salt water. That was back before I had any live plants, and I only used it a short period of time, a few weeks. Do her fish look ok? Does she at least have plants?

Pippa looks like a little wolf! Cool! Have tons of fun! Do you leave a potted plant in there with the stick bugs so they have noms? -
I doubt it. Plus Snoopy has a fan club.

Whoop whoop! Pleased to announce I have brand new shrimplets! (Which are hard to photograph) They are daring little ones, swimming all over the place. Very brave! I was just thinking 2 days ago that it seems I have less shrimp. I've been culling wilds to my 1 gallon Walstad jar, so that's part of it. But I also feel like I have been seeing a lot less babies. Or are they just growing pretty quickly and I continue to look for the tiny ones anyway? 🤨 With more offspring are probably more wilds, so I have ordered a [permanent] 10g tank divider which will be siliconed in place and has no holes for shrimplets to pass through. This I plan to set up in a new 10g and slowly move all shrimps over to it, with wilds on one side and blue dreams on the other. This will require a heater and sponge filter on either side of the divider, as water will not pass between the sides. I suppose I will have to go with new substrate, as attempting to move existing substrate could harm shrimplets that are small, clear, and difficult to see. I also want to use the same tank water, if at all possible. What makes this a bit tricky is that I want to put the new divided tank in the same spot that the current tank is in. Everything will have to be done in phases. The shrimp in my jar are fine where they are for the time being, but if they reproduce I should remove some of them so the jar does not get too crowded. I did see one of the 2 culls in the 29 gallon when the light came on this morning. Casually swimming around and sightseeing. She seemed very comfortable. She swam right past a tetra, and the tetra didn't care. Technically I could put a whole bunch of wilds in that tank, but I don't want to have to worry about shrimplets every time I want to maintain the PFS or the backup sponge filter that is in there.- 1,895 replies

Cool! We have a little bit of algae growth on the ceramics. The shrimps have also been working on the ball of hair algae and the catappa leaf I added. Day 1 (3/22/23) Today (4/4/23):

Water Parameters
Chick-In-Of-TheSea replied to Helpwithmy_snailpls's topic in Plants, Algae, and Fertilizers
I agree. Just feed your fish a small amount before you leave, not too much. The heater should be left on. Don’t worry about it getting too hot. The heater shuts itself off when the water gets to the temperature you set it for. Are you able to set the temperature on the heater you have or is it automatic? For your betta, I recommend setting it at 80. This is algae. It’s a good thing! It is called brown diatoms. -

It has runners all over the tank. For awhile the runners were running away up in the water column, so I had to make them behave with a few plant weights. 🙂- 1,895 replies

I’m starting to think of a backup plan also. Because if they breed that could get me into trouble. Not sure how far I can push the envelope here with stocking.

Culling wilds out to the jar daily. Usually it’s just one or two. They’ll come out of the woodwork in the blue tank and I fish them out. I lost count of how many shrimps are in the Walstad jar. 😳 It’s very densely planted. However, parameters are still perfect. I test for ammonia daily. Never any reading. The multi strip is once, maybe twice a week. The last 2 days I put a tiny piece of boiled cauliflower. They make quick work of it. Never anything left to remove.

Water Parameters
Chick-In-Of-TheSea replied to Helpwithmy_snailpls's topic in Plants, Algae, and Fertilizers
@Helpwithmy_snailpls To start, the 2 main things to watch are ammonia and nitrite. They should always be zero. If they are not zero, you should change 50% of the water to protect your fish. Test again each day until the readings remain at zero without changing water. Here is a helpful video. I would do these things first before you worry about the pH. @jwcarlson @JJenna @nabokovfan87 -

King Koopa nerite hibernating?
Chick-In-Of-TheSea replied to Chick-In-Of-TheSea's topic in General Discussion
Over on side wall now. Got some pics of my little clam on the half shell. That’s what he looks like with the color of his foot. (& yes.. he’s always been a poop machine. It was very obvious when he was in Geppetto’s tank) But that means he’s getting plenty to eat, eh? -

Perhaps I look like an aquarist or something? The cashier at the grocery store just told me a fish joke. “What do you call a fish without an eye?” “I dunno. What?” “Fsh!!!!!!” 😳😑😂- 1,525 replies

He was on the front wall of the tank this morning! I hope he’s there later too. It’s nice to see him. -
Re: Neocaridina In my experience neos flee from the light. I use a bright LED flashlight at times to inspect shrimp color and it startles them.
