Secured a new living space and preparing for an epic move! Still a rental, but once this is all reestablished I'll have to change the title to The Fish-Duplex Journal and might even get back to being on the forum again. Lots going on and I am taking a bit of a hiatus. But moving. 30 or so tanks. Alot to consider. Luckily the new place is only a few miles away but time is limited to only a few days. Things are really going to get shook up and reshuffled. Thinking I'll get some totes to house compatible fish in at the new place while things get broken down and rebuilt. It's going to be a total reset. A daunting task but also opportunity to start with a clean slate on some of the things I would've liked to have done differently. Time to get going.

Invasive Zebra mussels in Marimo moss balls
MAC replied to Andy's Fish Den's topic in Edmonds Washington Retail Store Forum
Respectfully, where I am and the West there are not zebra mussels. And we very much do not want them. Having a very ecological detrimental invasive species show up in pet stores all around here where they are not already is very concerning.- 54 replies

Pothos. If used in the aquarium it's technically an aquarium plant, right? I have it in at least half my tanks. Great for excess nutrients especially in tanks with unruly digging fish like cichlids.

I had an Amano shrimp crawl from one tank into the adjacent tank with two red eye puffers in it. Crazy fella. He has lived in their for months now. I've only seen him a couple of times but find a molt here and there so I guess he's surviving.

To pull the eggs or not pull the eggs, that is the question.

@Brandy I just re-read through this thread after pulling nannacara eggs today. Great job, those fish are gorgeous! -
Your favorite yet earliest fish keeping memories
MAC replied to FrozenFins's topic in General Discussion
We always had a fish tank in the living room growing up. Thinking back it was probably about 30gallons and I was always very interested in it and have many memories of the different fish we had. But my favorite memory was when I was about 12 when my uncle got me a ten gallon with all the accessories. It was my first tank that was all mine. I put it on the desk in my room with a few white cloud minnows and live plants. Somewhere I have a picture of me sitting on the floor christmas morning with my brand-new ten gallon "kit" and I look like the happiest kid in the world. I think that day I was. -
It looks female to me. Going mostly off fin shape.

What’s your dream mutation of a fish that doesn’t except

We've always talked about wishing the baby angelfish would forever stay around the size of a quarter. Little pygmy angelfish everywhere.- 15 replies

"Dwarf" water lettuce, maybe? Pistia stratiotes
-
@Fish Folk glad that worked. Looks great!
-
Yes, ventral/pelvic fin. Up-fronters under the body.
-
I really hope someone can jump in and correct me quickly if I'm off base here, but it's been my understanding that sexing kribs is done by looking at the difference in pelvic fins. Males the first ray of the fin is longest giving a pointed tip appearance while the 3rd ray of the females fin is longest making the fin look more rounded.

I will always have White Clouds in a tank. Or pond. Those little fish never get old for me.

For your first question I think by saying the fish need "clean water" is getting at the fish could be more sensitive to poor water conditions. That'd be my guess. But, it sounds like you are doing just fine at keeping your water "clean." With your LFS sounding a little iffy I don't know if I would shop there. But that's ultimately up to you. I 100% back the local stores but if it's no good, it's no good. Only open four hours a week and poor water conditions? Seems a little suspect. Do they have a bunch of hidden poker tables in the back room? Anyway, welcome to fish keeping!

This will be my first time using baby brine shrimp so I'm excited to see what that does for my yield. In the past it was green water/paramecium then hikari first bites stirred into green water, then ground up other fish foods in green water. The fry quickly showed different growth rates so I tried to keep a variety of food sizes available.

I couldn't tell ya, sorry. I've never had a culture. I keep a few muck jars around that fill with all sorts of tiny critters and feed that along with green water. The bettas are tiny tiny tiny even a few days after hatching. one of my "muck jars"

I actually just had a betta batch hatch. Your set up looks good, in fact I do much much less and have had decent results. Having a paramecium culture ready for the feeding the fry when they are tiny is key. Good luck!

Craigslist can be a place to re-home fish as well. Often in the community section under pets I see fish to be rehomed or even "wanted." If you explained the situation in a post there you may have someone come along willing to take the fish.
