  1. I am afraid you have an advanced and rapidly metastasizing case of MTS. Welcome to the MTS ward!
  2. I thought plants consumed nitrates last, after ammonia and nitrites. Too close to bedtime to do research! Maybe tomorrow.
  3. My ph is around 7.8, so not as high as yours. I am more of fish guy than a plant guy. I have had good luck with anacharis and vallisneria (like JettsPapa). Also pogostemon stellatus octopus, which is the best-growing plant in my low-tech tank.

You might try epsom salts as a laxative. I have seen different dosages from different sources. You can dose the tank or use it in a more concentrated solution as a bath. If that doesn't work and it is internal parasites, then you will need to try Fritz Paracleanse or API General Cure (they are the same). Better to medicate the food if the fish is still eating. Hospital tank is best if you have one.
  5. The detritus worms I have seen are very thin and white, and they were swimming. There are probably other species of detritus worms, but that does not look like the detritus worms I am familiar with.
  6. Wow, 8 tablespoons of food per day is a lot. I have 13 near-adult angels plus 17 other fish in my 125, and I feed a little over one teaspoon per day, six days a week. And I give the plecos some zucchini a couple of times per week. 8 tablespoons per day is 24 times what I feed my 30 fish. I would guess that is the root of the ammonia issue.
  7. Welcome! I look forward to hearing about your aquarium and its inhabitants!
  8. OK, at first I thought this was an understatement and kind of funny. Then realized that the boiling point of water varies with altitude, so it is scrupulously accurate.
  9. There is a pretty funny Youtube video about annoying aquarium plants in which a guy tells how upset he is that hornwort needles were all over his aquarium. He has ptsd from hornwort.
  10. Guppies? The kids would likely get to witness new babies in the tank. Or maybe mollies or swordtails for the same reason. And of course the top of the tank should be beyond the reach - and perhaps the climbing ability - of the munchkins.
  11. I agree that stopping the Prime is a good idea. Wait to see what happens with the ammonia level. If you are uncomfortable with the ammonia level or the fish shows distress, I would do a water change rather than using Prime.
  12. I think you meant "gravelanche." Sorry about your fish, rug, towels, filter, and marriage. Hope everything works out.
  13. The molly and the plecostomus look very healthy. More healthy than the sunfish, which is probably native. Remarkable!
  14. Yes, Grasshopper.
  15. I am pleased you are not to seriously ill, and hope you both recover fully and quickly! Whenever I see " the 'rona" it makes me think of The Knack.
  16. I have a lava rock substrate from Bonsai Jack, but for my second tank I am considering Black Diamond. Why do you prefer the medium grain?
  17. My aquarium is in the study, so I am at my desk or in my reading chair. I spend most of my time in the study and the kitchen. Soon I will have another tank between the kitchen and the dining room!
  18. You would probably have to buy them online, which is a little more risky than buying at your local fish store, where you get to see and evaluate the fish before you buy. They are a bit larger than most tetra species. Go on Youtube and search for "Congo tetra" and watch the videos.
  19. Lava rock is fine for aquariums. Gather it in a place that has not been sprayed with herbicides or insecticides, and wash it. It has more surface area than an ordinary rock, so that may give it an edge over other kinds of rock. It is relatively soft, so you can grind down sharp edges, if any, by rubbing rocks together or rubbing them against pavement..
