  1. I haven't personally kept Powder Blues but I have heard that if you can get all females they are much less aggressive and still have the blue coloration. It seems that Pearl Gouramis are a similar situation where females are less aggressive and they suggest more females than males if you get a mixed group
  2. Have you kept a large group of female Powder Blue Gouramis or male Honey Gouramis?
  3. Are you supplementing the plants with any fertilizers? When the fish started dying and the plants started to melt did you test for ammonia? Plants melting back/rotting could cause an ammonia spike. What symptoms were the fish showing before they pasted?
  4. If you have any concern about them getting out of hand snagging them out now is your best bet. Otherwise if you keep your feeding under control they will balance out eventually and the numbers wont be to bad. Enjoy
  5. I've noticed that depending where i get my almond leaves from they can be thicker or thinner more dried out or more "green". The more dried out crispy they are the faster they seem to break down. I haven't noticed any clouding in my experience but if I had to guess if you are seeing clouding it could be from the leaves breaking down faster and releasing extra nutrients into the water?
  6. Im part way through setting up 2 10 gallon grow out tanks. Just waiting on that sweet sweet Aquarium Coop delivery of additional sponge filters, air stones, etc. 🐟 The tanks are for a "Yellow Tiger Endler experiment" more to come... I also hope they can pull double duty and propagate some plants. There are leaves w/ babies from Fish Tail Java Fern pinned under a couple of rocks The Val, Java Moss, and Moss Balls are just there to get the cycle jump started as they all came out of an established tank My lights arrive today and I need to do some serious cord wrangling lol. Also I need another 20" glass lid as I only found one at my 3 LFS...
  7. It's hard to say for sure from the pics but it looks like either a bacteria bloom or the start of some form of hair algae. Has the wood ever been in an aquarium before? If it not it could be leaching extra nutrients into the water. Are you using a plant substrate? Some substrates can leach extra ammonia when first added. I wouldn't worry yet your tank might still be balancing itself. I personally would avoid add anything else to the tank at this point. Also I would hold off on major water changing unless your nitrates etc. are really high. Maybe cut back on your lighting for a couple weeks. Other info about the specifics of the tanks contents, water parameters can help pin down the issue.
  8. It functions primarily as an algae inhibitor but can provide some carbon for plants although likely not in amounts that would show a large change. CO2 injection would give you better plant results as that form of carbon is easier for the plants to uptake. If dosed correctly Easy Carbon should be safe for fish, snails, and shrimp
  9. I was setting up a couple grow out tanks today. Because of where they are located I needed to mount my power strip, air pump, etc. on the wall. I came up with this quick and easy mount for isolating the air pump to limit how much vibration transfers to the wall. I had some adhesive hooks (not sure what brand) that pivot in the middle. After mounting to the wall I added a felt furniture pad under the hook to hold it out. This keeps the air pump close to the wall but out just far enough to prevent it from touching. The felt pad helps absorb vibrations that transfer to the hook. I'm not sure this would work with a larger air pump but for these smaller ones it does the trick. Pumps pictured are the Aquarium Co-op USB Nano and the Aquatop 20
  10. I have a hillstream loach that likes to use a gap in my lid to get into the built in filter area of one of my tanks. I was able to stop this by filling that gap with a piece of cut to size filter mat. I dont know if this will work in your situation but for me its in a location that it isnt an eyesore and now i dont have to try and retrieve "Houdini" anymore lol
  11. After some quick searching it could be (not an expert here) a form of methane consuming bacterium. Which sort of makes sense if it is growing at the bottom of undisturbed subtrate. Apparently a form of this is commonly found in pool filter equipment and is highly resistant to treatment. It doesn't sound like it is dangerous just not visually appealing...makes me want to be able to see the bottom of my tanks now lol
  12. I have a 1lb filter bag full of crushed coral in the filter of my heavily planted tank to help buffer the PH. I haven't noticed any problems with the plants.
  13. I recently had a Cherry shrimp population explosion and today they were out in force... sorry video isn't great
  14. To me it all goes in cycles. A lot of people build toward a crazy tech heavy setup and eventually come around to the simplest methods again. One of my other hobbies is paintball and this type of thing always makes me think of this cartoon.
  15. Set this up for my girlfriend in her craft room so its a bit more colorful than my normal scapes but I like how it turned out. That is our new Betta also.
  16. I ended up finding this after doing some more digging. It didn't pop up on amazon in my regular search for aquarium lights for some reason. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B083NFLHKQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Mounted to the reflector with Velcro tape and the mounts it came with are just long enough to pin it in between the plastic shield.
  17. Is there any chance there is a deceased fish/snail etc. that may be hidden somewhere fouling the water? Are your live plants doing well or are they struggling? If you are doing water changes there has to be something that is producing a continuous spike in ammonia. Any major changes in your filter media that could have caused a loss of beneficial bacteria? Have you tested your tap water?
  18. I could however this tank looks pretty atrocious without the hood. Because of where I have the tank etc. I think the hood will help maintain temperature also. Just thought maybe there was a hood mount small enough that I may have missed in my searches. I was looking at the Marineland one but it doesn't quite fit and has some questionable reviews.
  19. Ooo nice magnet idea! Now we need Murphy magnetic algae scrapers! 😉
  20. I recently bought a used 8 gallon biocube that I am going to use for a Betta. The old lights in the hood still work but will need replacing. I would rather gut the hood electronics and replace the lights with a LED panel. Without modification I have about 4x10 inches to work with and 7x10 if I make some changes to the reflector etc. Any suggestions for LEDs that might work?
  21. First batch of shrimplets confirmed! Itty bitty scavengers everywhere! This one is sitting on Stratum as a size reference lol
