  1. Ooo! I hope they live up to expectation! I’m sure they’ll be super pale right out of the box but they look like an absolutely gorgeous fish.
  2. Congratulations! Great picture, too. 😊 First fry are soooo exciting!
  3. The benefit to assassin snails is that they keep other snail populations in check. I finally got two to deal with my Malaysian trumpet snail infestation and they’ve been a big help! If you want to keep your apple and nerite snails though, I’d definitely take the assassin out. It shouldn’t bother the shrimp.
  4. Ahh very nice! 😍 What are those black ring things called that you’re using to hold up the jars?
  5. Thanks @PineSong! Having the house dim (for my fish’s health of course) is already making me feel sleepier. 😃 My sleep issues are frustrating because when I find any sort of intervention that helps address my underlying health issues, it will often shift my sleep cycle back towards normal by 2-3 hours. It happens almost immediately, but unfortunately the effects slowly decrease over time. My homeostasis sucks. The truth is I don’t want to go to bed earlier because it’s the time of day I feel best. But I do want my fish to be happy and healthy, hence my attempt to find motivation this way! Thankfully I have no trouble falling asleep at any time of day or night. I really feel for the people who can’t sleep. To address your other point, I’m sure your fish would be fine living under a bridge with you if you chose a bridge over a really clean river. Lots of water changes full of tasty microbes! 😀
  6. Thanks everyone! Still ORD but I appreciate the input. What I’m choosing to hear is that I should really turn out the lights earlier. 😉😉 What I’m also hearing is that if I don’t, I shouldn’t feel guilty. My fish do get an extended nap during the day when the tank lights go out, and they do seem to rest during that time. 😌
  7. Ohhhh! Thanks so much for sharing that!
  8. In my attempts to create a sustainable infusoria culture, I’ve ended up with several jars full of seed shrimp. They’re wonderful little creatures! I love the way they swim. I’d also love for them to be a food source for fry, but I’m wondering if their hard little exteriors are too tough for tiny fry to digest, even if they can fit them in their mouth. Does anyone have experience trying to feed seed shrimp to small fry?
  9. Very nice simple design! That’s a perfect container. Getting enough water flow through my homemade fry boxes has always been my biggest challenge. If you can get an airlift tube to pump water in from the outer tank, that would be AWESOME. (That’s my goal next time I make fry boxes.) The airline in the fry box is a good start though.
  10. Thanks @Guppysnail! Part of my (many) weird medical problems is a delayed sleep cycle. I feel tired and foggy during the day, but clear and energetic at night. So it’s hard to motivate myself to go to sleep. Of course it can turn into a negative feedback loop, where if I go to bed later I feel foggier during the day. The good news is I can pretty much sleep any time I try! In terms of self care, I’m much more motivated to take care of my fish than myself 😄 The blue screen light is a real problem. It’s hard to stay away from screens, whether for work, hobbies, or relaxation. So I should only have very dim lights on at night for the fish. I can do that.
  11. That’s great! Sounds like you found a good system!
  12. So, I’ve been staying up too late. I don’t get back to the bedroom until about 1:30am. This means the lights are often on in my kitchen and living room until then, so even though the tank lights are out, the fish aren’t in total darkness by any means. Having the lights on so late at night can’t be good for me—I mean, my fish. I’m sure it’s disrupting my their sleep cycle. I don’t want to stress them out. This can’t be good for my their long-term health. Fish fam, I really need to turn the lights out earlier, right? The fish are clearly sleeping, but I mean, the poor things. They can’t close their eyes! Surely they need more than 4.5 hours of true darkness. Right??
  13. I personally use one of those tiny ones in a 10 gallon, just because I’d rather use too little than too much. I then test the GH and see where I’m at, and add another one if necessary. You just leave it in there, and over time it will dissolve completely. If it dissolves really fast, it could mean your GH was really low. I’ve had a wondershell actually fizz when I put it in the tank! It shouldn’t pose any risk at all to your cories. It’s just minerals, so they should be able to swim around it, even sit on it and taste it without any problems. 🙂
  14. Good news! I’m making progress feeding the baby otos. The slime sticks weren’t the best, because unfortunately the slime didn’t stick to the sticks very well. I started growing some algae on some rocks, and those have gone over pretty well! But the favorite by far? French cut green beans! My LFS owner was raving about them when I brought him platys, and since @Guppysnail and everyone else seems to love them so much I decided I had to try them too. The game changer for me was learning you can buy them frozen. That makes it soooo easy. 10/10 would recommend. The amano likes it too. Lastly, here’s an oto balancing on the shell! No idea why it decided to sit there, but it’s adorable! Just as adorable is my silly gentle loach bombing the video. “Hey! Whatcha doin’? Whatcha doin’? Hey! Hey! Just sittin’? Oh—okay. Yup. Cool. Cool.”
  15. I’m just catching up on all this and I’m so sorry to read about the loss of your little fighter. I lost my “first” fish—first fish as I was getting into this hobby for real, as an adult—because I forgot to plug the heater back in after a water change. It was a betta in a 2.5 gallon bowl. A very hard lesson. It feels terrible, but all we can do is learn, forgive ourselves, and try again. Sending hugs. ❤️
  16. Yay! Glad we found the culprit! Sea level certainly has an effect, but I’m not sure how much. Less pressure means less dissolved oxygen. Could it be that fish can suffer from altitude sickness for the same reason people do?
  17. Bummer about the shrimp! It’s tough—sometimes they just don’t do well. I’ve never gotten a shrimp colony going from the shrimp at my LFS. I had a nice little colony in my 55g when I first set it up as a dirted tank, before all its problems, but I can’t remember where I got those shrimp. I haven’t had success since then. I wonder if most of the hardness in my tanks is coming from magnesium and not calcium—perhaps that’s part of the problem. Oh, random thought—if a shrimp momma passes away before her babies are ready, can you put them in an egg tumbler and get them to hatch? 🤔
  18. It really is weird. If there are any PhD students lurking on the forum looking for interesting fish diseases to study, PM @MollyMomma!
  19. Aww the new ricefish look great! For some reason I can’t see the link to the online resource. Do you mind sharing it again? I’ve been trying to figure out what makes a “good” ricefish so I know what to select for. I’m debating getting some new ricefish from AquaHuna to add to the gene pool.
  20. Oh wow!! It looks great! I hope you can take it easy for a few days after all that. Re-scaping a tank is sooo much work. 💪 Hopefully Grume will stay friendly towards the new guppies.
