  1. remove the wool to plant it, you just plant by the stem. id give them about an inch of space inbetween the stems so they dont choke each other out
  2. yes, ghost shrimp are bred as feeders primarily and in my experience, aren’t healthy in general. they arent fed good foods, are heavily overstocked at the breeders, wholesalers, and stores, and are kept in poorer conditions.
  3. some phone shots of some plecos. pretty impressive on what phones can do nowadays
  4. im loving this @Bill Smith! i love experimenting and pushing the boundaries, j believe that is the only way to really learn. excited to follow this along and see how well it works long term. the tree decoration looks very nice as well, smart choice on just using one from petsmart as a base.
  5. i actually used excel to kill off some val on purpose. mistakenly planted some in a high tech set up and immediately regretted it knowing that it would take over the tank within 1-2 months which isn’t what i wanted. i had a bit of an algae problem so i used excel to take care of both problems. it worked very well, as you could see in your case. id leave the plants alone and do a few partial water changes to get the excel out of the system. some of them should bounce back, it’s just a waiting game.
  6. its small but blooming! this stuff is spreading like crazy it’s taken over the aloe plant sitting beside the tank
  7. it’s hard to say exactly, we would need to know what minerals are already present in your water since that will indicate what fertilizers need to be added for “best” growth. id honestly just dose easy green 1x every 1-2 weeks since they’re pretty slow growers. are you going to be dosing any co2? that would change the answer as well imo.
  8. it’s still going strong. put it in a smaller container with a 100% fresh water change of straight tap water a couple days ago and that wasn’t enough to even phase it.
  9. this is my rescue jumping spider, kevin. she (we thought it was a he until we saw eggs one day 😨) she lives in a terrarium with live plants (i can't help myself lol) here is a fly she had for lunch one day
  10. im currently growing basil and mint. you can grow most herbs as long as you have a pot or something with substrate for them to root into, they don't do too well with roots just in water. im about to add some lettuce, spinach, and strawberries to a couple tanks to grow out. i also want to try out some hot peppers one day too.
  11. i clearly don’t know how to spell leeches... but yes, they aren’t really slowing down, i’ll see how long they last in here.
  12. last saturday i redid a tank that had leaches that came in on some plants. ive had 2 of them sitting in a tub of water straight from the tap (no dechlorinator). our water is very hard and mineral rich here so i wanted to see what effects this would have on the leaches. its now thursday and they are still going strong. not sure what this proves besides them being unnecessarily hardy but i’ll see how long it takes for them to finally kick the dust. there are some pond snails in the tub that are still going strong too which is interesting.
  13. thank you! it is my least care intensive tank i have, 20% water change every 2 weeks, i top off inbetween with distilled water. ferts whenever i remember to put them in. i think the simplicity is what makes it so rewarding.
  14. this is charlie mint i had in an aquarium previously and converted it to partially submerged, partially emersed. it is vining like crazy but it has also started flowering! ive never had this plant flower before. this is the nano pond style tank i have going with shrimp and juvenile daisy ricefish
  15. i have 4 fluval lights im currently running. i saw another comment by someone saying that blue light tends to grow algae so ive removed blues to see if that has any effect long term. im running my own mini experiment. here is my nano, pretty simple. do your lights also “step-up/down” in light instead of gradually changing? like the sunset for example will have it be one brightness/color for 10 minutes and then change to slightly dimmer and more red. it does it in steps though instead of a gradual shift. one of my 3.0s
  16. i would leave it, the bulb portion itself doesn’t really need to be in the substrate, as long as the roots are holding it in place. ive actually had more success having the bulb above than in the substrate.
  17. @Streetwise i caught her a moth for this dinner, she gets fed 2-3x a week although ill be lowering that to once a week during winter. you can see it on the left of the photo
  18. for a large aquarium where you need 2 or more? no, unless you really like the pendant look and want to play around with different positions. you would also be able to program them individually so you can play around with levels for the color and brightness to create unique looks for the aquarium. i really enjoy it on my 25g cube and am happy with it there but i wouldn’t want to invest in multiple $200 lights for a large aquarium unless i had the cash to burn.
  19. yes, mollies will breed with each other.
  20. threw some carrots in for the shrimp and took some daytime photos. the plants are already showing some new growth which is nice. im shopping for a new better looking light and came across this ikea light, i can clamp it on the lamp that goes above the bowl and lights the spider terrarium.
  21. i would add some more, they may have depleted those root tabs at this point.
  22. a different type of nature but here is a wild caught jumping spider in my terrarium eyeing down her dinner
  23. you risk the fish having deficiencies if fed primarily feeders and earth worms. i would try some frozen foods like blood worms, shrimp, etc, most fish have no issues going to frozen foods. i'd soak them in some garlic (to make them a little more tasty and enticing for the fish) and some vitachem in tank water to defrost them. what pellets are you trying to feed? have you tried switching out the brands/type of pellet? it may just not like that specific food. i agree with the above poster that feeders should be a treat rather than a staple in the diet unless you are feeding a more nutrient dense fish like a gut-loaded livebearer. minnows don't really have too many nutrients to them either.
  24. looks more like leaf damage than pearling.
