  1. im mixing up my weekly repashy and i was curious if anyone adds anything extra to theirs? i tend to add some spirulina, garlic, and freeze-dried goodies. this week it was some bloodworms (a staple), gammarus, and plankton. i usually layer my repashy so the fish get a good mix and add the spirulina and garlic in between the layers.
  2. got the jungle tank set back up! half the plants melted so it looks pretty barren but im just gonna be patient and let them grow in. i picked up about 20 boraras rasboras and 15 red beckfords pencil fish to add to it.
  3. thank you! i was never a big spider fan but she is slowly converting me
  4. you can breed as many fish as you want but an unsuspected surprise fry always brings a special kind of joy. something about it beating all the odds haha
  5. terrariums/jarrariums are quickly catching up to aquariums as my favorite and they are even more dangerous because they can be small. not much you can keep in a small tank but you can in a terrarium. and there are no water changes and if set up correctly, no maintenance besides plant trimming and an occasional misting. no filters, heaters, etc needed. sales pitch over 😂 this was my jumping spider’s previous terrarium set up: not too bad but im not a fan of tank gravel and i wanted to make it bioactive with scavengers/detritivores like isopodes which cant live in the gravel. and the remake: you can see her at the top center lots of ivy in the back that is going to take over hopefully soon. alder cones as small pine cones i really wanted to give her lots of branches and decorations to climb on and wanted it to look like an overgrown forest. im pretty pleased with it. plants: moss (a wildtype i dont know from my backyard, sphagnum, spanish, and sheet), arrowhead, english ivy, and the plant that is sold for aquariums but is terrestrial that i cant remember the name of. substrate: rocks as a drainage area, bioactive terrarium substrate mix, topped with a mix of fluorite and stratum. the terrarium substrate ive had in a tub with a culture of springtails in it. ill be adding more of my little projects in this thread 😊
  6. yes i know lol, i corrected myself. i tried 1/2” not 1/4”. ill try the 1/4” with a thick layer of tape to see if i can get it to work. thanks for the help!
  7. i havent added anything new to the bowl since i set it up a couple weeks ago so imagine my surprise when i see a single tiny fry chugging along. it is tiny and impossible to photograph cause of the distortion from the bowl. looks like it has been living off of algae and biofilm although i do drop in a couple krill flakes for the shrimp 1-2x a week. had to circle him so we could see 😂 its been a while since i bred goldfish so this should be fun to do. it’ll stay in the shrimp bowl till it gets a bit bigger but i will make sure to feed him some fry food in addition to the krill flakes. now im just very curious which of the two goldfish are the mom and dad and what he will look like 🤔
  8. ive used the submersible led tubes before, they tend to go out after a year or less, constant moisture is just not good for lights it seems. there are some very flat profile lights available nowadays that should be able to sit on top of the glass. you can also use led strips and tape them to the top of the glass where they wont get wet.
  9. 1/8” is smaller than 1/4”, you can also read it as .5/4” although that isnt a size but that’s what it would break down to. you’re right though i mistyped, i tried out 1/2” not 1/4”. the 3/8” rod fit perfectly though so i worry 1/4” will be too small. maybe if i add a thick layer of tape it will work.
  10. thank you for those site recommendations! that will help. there are only major chains around here and they have a basic measuring tool. i was able to screw a 3/8” rod into the regulator though but it wasnt hollow so it didnt work. ill check those sites out.
  11. thanks! 1/4” is too large, it’s closer to 3/8” outer diameter. i know it is left hand threaded but not sure if it is bsp or npt. i said rod but pipe is a better term, i actually looked into a larger diameter pipe and using a bushing and a nipple on each side to connect them to the larger pipe but havent been able to find any that fit. unfortunately i haven’t been able to find any info on the regulator anywhere online and dustins fish tanks doesnt respond (its why im a coop customer, the customer service is amazing). ive emailed and called them leaving a voicemail, tempted to just drive down there and knock on their door lol. it really shouldn’t be this difficult to get replacement parts for a product they sold and branded. i took the regulator to a few different stores and tried different combos but none worked. i bought a few 3/8” pipes from online brewery supply stores but they all came in with a 3/8” inner diameter and closer to a 1/2” outer diameter when i measured them.
  12. drop cloth is the route i would go with too. just open the windows to allow the paint fumes to leave, those would concern me more than covering the tank
  13. yes, they initially sent me contact info for their supposed manufacturer (a good month after i sent them the email) and the manufacturer said that it is not their regulator and they cant help. i emailed dustin’s fish tanks back and have yet to receive a response. this should be a sub $10 part honestly i have no clue why it can’t be found anywhere.
  14. @Ben_RF that is exactly what i do. i check in every couple of days and only check the topics that seem interesting to me or that i feel like i can help with. i think cory designed this forum so that you dont feel like you have fomo and that you can check in once a week if needed and pick up where you left off.
  15. im not sure why you would treat it any different. i always air on the side of caution and quarantine everything. if the betta is going in first or you are adding all of the fish at once to an unstocked tank then you could just quarantine in the main tank since there is no risk of infecting anything.
  16. so i received a regulator from another planted aquarium youtuber as a gift and the rod that connects the regulator to the solenoid is broken. i measured and its about 3/8” but i cannot find a hollow threaded rod anywhere. unfortunately their customer service isn’t really the best and i haven’t received any help or a response from them. ive reached out to every local welding and beer supply company within an hour drive and none carry it. ive searched online and wasted money on having ones shipped to me that dont fit. you would think this was a readily available part with how popular regulators are for aquariums and beer making but no luck. hoping someone here knows where i can buy a replacement, id really hate having to buy another regulator for one little part. here are photos, i need the hollow rod that would connect these two together. it actually broke inside so i had to have it stripped out and rethreaded. ive found many that fit but werent hollow and all the hollow ones are too large even when labeled as 3/8”. i appreciate any help, thanks!
  17. i have all my other lights hanging from the ceiling, there is a big photo print hanging there so i wouldn’t want it hanging. i was toying with the idea of mounting it to the wall
  18. thank you! this is exactly the help i needed :) might make it my weekend project!
  19. i think most of them don’t really keep jumpers. all but one of my tanks are open top (i like to play with emersed plants and decorations) and i never had any issues, even with killies. i do have floaters which i think help. you can also lower the water level so they arent able to jump as high but i personally don’t like the look of that.
  20. i’ve tried googling it but haven’t found anything. does anyone know where to purchase or diy a height extender for the fluval 3.0? mine is still too close to the surface at the highest option. maybe a way to mount it to the wall if anything? thanks!
  21. worked a bunch on the tank. i also went plant shopping for some emersed plants as if i dont have enough. i did redo my spider’s terrarium which im proud of: cant wait for the ivy in the back to really start spreading. plenty of places for her to climb and explore 😊
  22. caught all the fish and plants, removed all the hardscape, and drained the jungle tank. gotta reseal some things in the waterfall but i plan to have it back running by the end of the week. stratum is very dirty haha. hoping my boss lets me hop on the order for next week and get some fish in 🤞
  23. they came in with plants from a plant farm (im assuming they were being grown in ponds outdoors).
  24. @Ben Ellison that’s a good idea. im going to see if any others are in the substrate and may experiment on them.
  25. dose salt and raise the temps to about 85/86 gradually over the course of a few hours to a day depending on the current temp. stop dosing pimafix and melafix, they won’t do anything but potentially add unneeded stress. you should have nitrates in the water, redo the test to see what it is at. did you add any new fish that could have introduced this?
