  1. Hi! Thanks for adding me to the group. I have a problem. I have a 30-year-old (yes he is 30 - I got him in 1991) spotted raphael catfish. His name is Spot. I don’t know how much information you would like but he’s in a 90 gallon tank with other fish - 3 clown loaches, : platys, 4 black tetras, 6 neon tetras, 3 black neon tetras & 1 bristlenose pleco. We got new fish a couple weeks ago and now my clown loaches have ick and Spot is not doing well. He stopped eating days ago which isn’t really that unusual. But the white on him is turning red, he is breathing super heavy and he’s out in the open. He is actually going up to the surface of the tank to get air. If you know anything about raphael cats this is not normal behavior. I’ve NEVER seen him do this. Something similar to this happened the last time we got new fish which was back in 2016. His white spots turned red and there was red stringy material coming out of them. Back then I was told that death was eminent but I found an old forum on the Internet that suggested putting him in a quarantine tank and treating him with 2 different meds and doing water changes every day for a month. It was a rough go but he survived. As an FYI Spot also survived the massacre of 1998. My boyfriend at the time did a water change for me as a favor but didn’t know you had to use dechlorinator. Every fish died except for Spot He’s a fighter!!!!! I spent 4 hours searching for that old forum on the Internet yesterday and can’t find anything. Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated. I love Spot. He’s been a part of my life for so long. And yes - I am never getting new fishes again. At least not while Spot is alive.
  2. Hi everyone, I've had my striped raphael catfish for almost 10 years now and he has always picked a really cramped hiding place in the aquarium. Its one of those artificial bell decorations, and he has to curl up inside just to fit his body in there. I'd like to get him a better spot to hide where he doesn't have to contort his body so much. I removed the decoration and put the fish into my 20 gallon quarantine tank for the meantime, since without a place to hide, he gets bullied by my synodontis eupterus, whom he's been tankmates with for 9 years. What recommendations for hiding spots, or even just scapes for that matter, do y'all have? (Thumbnail is the fish in the quarantine tank)
  3. Hi. The one gowth started a week ago and now I see a second one. The water parameters are all normal. Started a white ick treatment because I noted two or three white spots on his tail. Please help identify this growth on mouth? Is it white ick?
  4. Hi everyone hope ye are doing well. I have 6 raphael catfish that i have raised their about 3 and a half inches now. Does any1 have any idea what could i sell them at.
  5. Hi this is my first post here and unfortunatly not a good one. I have had trouble in my tank over the last 2 weeks and my fish are dying. This is my first tank and about 5 months old. First it was an out break of ich which I treated with API white spot cure. I completed the treatment as direction on the bottle says but then 2 days later I saw no more spots another outbreak happened which looked the same. It first started on my cardinal tetras and then moved to my catfish. All the cardinals has died and the cat fish is not looking to good. I have a male guppy and a male betta in the tank as well and they seem to be unaffected (they don't fight and gets alone very well. betta is even leaving my cherry shrimp alone). So for the disease, it started as white spots and now there is a mix of yellow as well and only on the catfish (about 2inch big). I did another course of API white spot when I noticed it the second time but that had no effect, I am now dosing with API primafix and API melafix. I am from UK so do not have access to all the meds you have in the US. Any help with identifying and helping me to treat this outbreak would be appreciated. I've had the catfish for almost 3 months now. pH : 7-7.2 Nitrates: 0 Hardness: GH-14-17 Nitrite: 0 Ammonia: 0 KH/Buffer: 2-4 Water Temperature: 25°C 77°F
