  1. Bamboo skewers, or chopsticks, in case no feathers are found. Various spring clamps. Like clothespins and the ones for potato chip bags. "Pipettes" or eyedroppers. More airline tubing than you need.
  2. You didn't mention it, so I'm wondering. Will you have approximately equal airflow in all four buckets? I'll be patiently awaiting updates and results.
  3. I can't think of anything for the nerites. For the otos, maybe you could try putting an algae wafer in a bowl and suspend it in the water? There's a thread on snails in septic tanks.
  4. I don't think I waited, at all. That was forty-five years ago. I don't remember how I cleaned it up. I left the filter there and got a hang on back filter.
  5. I used one a long time ago. It seemed to work great. I only used it for a few or six months, though. I don't remember what I did. Maybe I got a new air pump. When I turned it on, there was wayyy too much airflow. It filled the tank with every bit of crud that was under there. It was a lot. I swore off of them, after that.
  6. A simple, crude way would be to drill holes in a hang-on back filter.
  7. Maybe there's something missing in their diet? If you find out, let us know. Asking for a friend...
  8. Are you medicating due to an immediate health threat? I just realized that you only started the medications. If there's no immediate health risk, you might be better off to change water and start medicating after the nitrites and nitrates are brought back down.
  9. Everyone's aquarium is different, but I just went through a high ammonia and nitrite event. I still have highish nitrites. My nitrite level peaked at 5 ppm. The fish didn't act stressed, at all. There was no reddening of the gills. If I were in your position, I would go to the store and get purigen or zeolite, bottled bacteria (I wouldn't use them yet.), and Tetra test strips. Then watch closely. I have both the API liquid test kit and the Tetra 6 in 1 strips. For the nitrite test, they match closely. The scale on the strips goes higher.
  10. Out of curiosity, how high is super high? Is it off the chart high, or 1 or 2 ppm?
  11. Has one tank been set up longer than the other? Have you recently replaced filter media in one tank?
  12. An opaque tape to cover some of the LEDs? This guy does that:
  13. There isn't a lot of information available on this product. From their safety data sheet, it looks like a mix of carbon and a purigen/synthetic zeolite-type of material. So, I think that there's a good chance that it will absorb some nutrients.
  14. If you do a 10% water change every other day, over two weeks, it would average out to the same as two 30% water changes. That might be a thing to try.
  15. Because of six or eight bad decisions, I killed off my bacteria colonies. After a week and a half, I've finally turned the corner. I have shrimp, so I didn't want to do any big water changes. I've been doing two or three smallish water changes per day, plus adding bottled bacteria, using zeolite, and a filter from another tank. So far, there are no losses. No one has even shown signs of distress. The highest levels of ammonia and nitrite, I recorded, were 2 and 5 ppm respectively. Currently, they're at 1 and 3 ppm.
  16. Oh. That's a beauty. Don't tell anyone, until you decide.
  17. "Dry ice" has to be food grade.
  18. A one-piece aquarium tank. No seams, no failed seams, no big silicone globbed corners.
  19. "Back in the day" there was such a thing. I've been trying to find out whatever happened to it.
  20. All I see happening is filtering the air coming out of the air stone. If you have a tube that the stone can fit inside, with a little room to spare, putting the floss pad over the bottom would provide some filtration.
  21. My local pet store doesn't know what their water parameters are. They just put the fish in the tanks. They also feed only flakes. They don't make any allowances for the fish. The scarlet badis seem OK. The blue neon rasboras seem OK. It just makes me wonder how critical the recommended parameters are. Or, is that just where they're found? If I collect fish during the dry season and find them buried in mud, do I keep them in mud?
  22. Yep. That's a lot going on. I'm just starting with plants and fish, both. The fish are easier (so far...).
