What did you get done today?

Today I finally accomplished a 9 month long goal. Upgraded my 20 gallon tall to a 75 gallon, again. Stand still needs it's trim and bookshelves. Thankful that my husband built the stand and helped me get the sucker in place. Now my happy lil trees will have room to "grow" and I don't have to part with an antique family heirloom. Still have more plants to put in. But the few fish and shrimp that are in there are happy as could be. Also found 3 surprise flagfish fry when I was searching the 20 for shrimp to transfer over. I thought for sure any eggs or fry would become snacks so was not even thinking about baby fish. No thought to take a picture either. It's only been a little over an hour since I moved them and the 2 flagfish are already doing their dance. There is also a pair of praecox rainbows in there. Internet says fish don't school/shoal with other species, but all 4 of these stuck together the first hour. Explored together, played follow the leader. Tomorrow some of the mulmy substrate from the 20 will go in the 75 as well. I also have some black mollies, cherry barbs and white clouds to add in a few days. Husband was rushing me to move the fish so he could go to bed. Better tank pictures coming soon in the journal section.

That stand is an ingenious way to keep the cool piece of furniture underneath!

Introduced a couple Flying Fox to the orioles tank to handle some algae concerns.  A few minutes later, I was on a teleconference and noticed some strange activity in the tank, and upon further examination, saw maybe 15 or 20 tiny fry, many of them hiding around the heater.

It's tough to see them, sitting on top the heater.  For the next half hour or so, I sat like a man watching a train wreck, amazed at the carnage as the little ones were picked off one after another.  Nature at work.

Got a Lot done today. Did some reorganization amd cleanup around the fishroom, took care of some gecko chores, and then started tackling my biggest project: the 20 long. I started by scooping all the old substrate into a trash bag. It’s old fluval stratum and a mix of random Petco gravels. I want to switch the tank over to Eco complete, and some of the botanicals and dead snails that were mixed in had fungused so I figured best thing was to throw it out rather than clean it just to put it away somewhere. I also played around with my air system since I’ve been getting next to no flow in the 5.5 sponge filter. Turns out, the green nipple portion in the CoOp sponge filter had clogged with algae, after I cleaned that out it ran fine. Of course it took me 45 minutes to try that, and that was after I swapped out to new airline tubing, threw on a second air pump, replaced the discs in my never clog air stone, and had started to give up. So Always Check the plastic portion! Anyways, while I was finagling with the air system, I also filled the 20 so I could scrub it with some dish soap. Once that was done and I gave it a good scrub, I drained the tank again. I tried to spot gravel vac some fine dust left behind by the stratum and forgot to make sure the end of my siphon was still in the bucket... so now 4 soaked towels later I’ve got a fan blowing on my carpet. Hopefully the ppl below me didn’t get any water... all in all, very productive albeit messy day.

Technically I did this last night, but hey, it all counts, right? I modified the returns on two HOBs I have running on my 40 gal breeder tank so that the water flows along the surface instead of shooting straight down onto my plants and wood. I realized the surface was pretty stagnant and the tank wasn't getting good overall water flow, despite using two Aquaclear 50s. I just taped a section from a clear plastic cup to the edge of the tank under each return. Hoping the fish and plants are happier now.

I made my first sale to a local fish store today.         I don’t want to bury the lead I made $5.00 for each two oz cup of Java moss = $50.00!  I was prepared for $2.00 a cup.  The owner said it will sell out tomorrow.  He will sell it for $10.00 a cup.  The funny thing is the Java moss was a secondary sale to the tiger mosaic guppies of which I got $20.00, a dollar a fish.  I figure this was a good place to start. To help build his business.  No fancy  guppies in his store.  I almost fell down when he said $70.00.  The picture is my fish in his tanks and the moss.

Went and picked up a 15 gallon aquarium today to use as a quarantine tank. It came with some accessories, like a filters, air pump and heater... but check out the vintage of these things!

All seems to be circa 1979-1980. All of it seems to be in working order as well. I must say, not a bad snag for 20 bucks. Prefect I think for a quarantine tank as well.

It also came with what appears to be a "betta tank" though, if I use it. It will be to temporarily house fry.

There also appears to be what might be some form of "sponge" filter. I am going to pick upnsome lava rock soon, so I think I'll also get some batting and fill this with those too use in a set up at some point.

Replaced the buzzing / rattling Sunsun 304 with a Fluval 407 on my 53 gallon display tank. After a lot of troubleshooting, couldn't take it anymore. Loved the capacity for bio media in the Sunsun, but the flow was actually a bit too strong which forced me to use the spray bar (I prefer the input jet jet). The fluval has adjustable flow. So nice hearing trickling water instead of buzzing.

I was unable to fit one full tray of bio media from the Sunsun into the 407, so I put a spare Tidal 55 HOB on the tank with the extra media. Once the large sponge in the 407 builds up some beneficial bacteria I'll be able to pull the HOB off anytime I need a seeded filter to setup a new tank.

Also strapped the power strip up (meant to do that 3 months ago!) and installed an Inkbird controller so I can sleep easier knowing I won't roast my fish due to a heater malfunction. Thanks to @Daniel for the Inkbird tip!

1 month 9 days since last water change, I was trying out an increased feeding schedule but water quality kept declining and things appeared to be on the verge of crashing so I did a more significant water change and will be stepping back feeding and testing a new schedule on this tank.

During & after

Almost finished planting and decorating my 10-gal in preparation of moving the new babies from the quarantine tank, and getting some yellow dwarf shrimp. Have a couple plants on order still, and have a coop sponge filter on order too. I love the shrimp cave! I'm too cheap to pay for just a shrimp dish plus shipping so am temporarily going to use the top of a nik nak dish, until I can make a trip to get something more suitable (ceramic pot saucer or something). Im also using a plastic tub top until my glass top comes in.

This is what I got done to day (along with several other things). I painted the back of my new project with glossy black paint. I also learned that if I did not let it dry for a full 24 hours (like the dictions said to) it will orange peel. Luckily the parts that orange peeled will be hidden by plants and other goodies. IMG_5253.JPG.da2ee4355144b104e6afe6c0fa5c0917.JPG

Finally got the 55g moved from the old house to the new. The scape is a disaster but I'm glad to have the last of the fish here so I can take better care of them. Everything went as smoothly as it could have. Will start rescaping tomorrow once all the fish are settled back down. Also tore down the Gladiator rack so I can set it up at the new place and get these 10g tanks off the counters.

My new "professional" (i.e. adjustable) heater came in today so that's in the quarantine tank now. My danio erythromicron like it in the cooler range of 70-75, and I needed a new heater for my new 10-gal anyway, so why not one that will do double-duty - make them happy and save money on electric bills by not heating it that extra few unnecessary degrees for half the year with a preset heater. Though it costs more up front, I think in the long run it is worth it. I like to turn the house heat way down at night in the winter, and dont turn it way up in the daytime either - like 62 at night and 66 in the day.
