  1. I know. I see a lot of controversy on this topic. Some say its all water quality some say it's the substrate. From what I've seen I think its more complicated than that and it's probably a combination of multiple factors including the species becauae it seems to be fine for some people and not for others. In my latest tank I am experimenting with both eco complete and sand.
  2. I wonder if the type of cory has any influence on that? I have pygmys on eco complete and I have for a few months and haven't noticed any problems. They also are all over the tank more so than other corys I've seen. I also put their food in a tiny little glass dish I found on Amazon to make it easier to remove the uneaten food.
  3. I'd love it if you shared pictures of the tank. I'm always impressed when people build their own tanks
  4. I think that's a pretty good sounding start. You'll probably see some more that catch your eye. I recommend some crypts. They are super easy and they grow well and come in a lot of different varieties. Rotalla is also an easy stem plant, from what I've experienced.
  5. Oh well! That is really amazing! The tank is looking super great and congratulations on your baby plecos! I love your rainbowfish. Im setting up a tank right now for blue eyed rainbows and some threafdfin rainbows. I'm very excited!
  6. They are really pretty fish. Apparently my lfs has a source and can get them in pretty regularly. The ones they get are more golden orange than red but that's fine with me.
  7. As long as your watet quality is good and you are keeping up on the maintenance and everyone is getting along then you are fine. If thr platys are not all males you may have a problem down the road if they start breeding. That's one reason I don't keep livebearers anymore
  8. I would load up on some rotalla and different types of anubias and Java fern to start. I've found all those to be quite easy. If you do choose to go with stem stem plants you will want to look at getting some root tabs. If you are into a total tear down and redo, ive found the eco complete to be a very solid and easy to work with planted tank substrate.
  9. There are lots of great nano fish. Chili rasboras are super cool so are the green rasboras. You can do a few pairs of clown killies if you have a secure lid (they are jumpers). Celestial pearl danios are stunning as well.
  10. Wow all your tanks look amazing! I am new back to the hobby as well after a good bit out of it. Multiple tanks are a thing. I'm amazed ive managed to restrain myself as much as I have. I have a 15 gallon killifish and what will be a 30 gallon rainbow fish tank. The smaller varieties obviously. PSEUDOMUGIL LUMINATUS and threadfins specifically. Don't mind my blatant copy paste.
  11. I haven't tried any tissue culture anubias, but I did snag a tissue culture crypt from my lfs and I must say. Highly impressed. Yea they are small but there are a lot of plants packed in there and I've seen a ton of growth in the week since I've planted them. They've easily doubled in size. There are enough plants in one that depending on the size of the tank you are setting up, you might be able to split a pot with a friend.
  12. Thats true. I'm guessing thats why my one ended up rotted.
  13. I haven't planted any of mine. I either glue them on something or wedge them between crevices on driftwood until they take hold themselves. So far this seems to have worked well. I've only lost one to rot.
  14. Ahh people say vinegar because it's good at getting the hard water stains off easily. If there are no hard water stains hydrogen peroxide works a treat. I use it all over my house when I clean.... particularly the bathroom.
  15. Welcome! You are going to love the hobby and love it here. Some truths. Mts (multiple tank syndrome) is real and you will always look at a bigger tank and go man I wish I had gotten that one, so go as big as you can reasonably afford lol.
  16. Your tanks and lovely and I'm sighing over the congo tetras. Those are one of my dream fish. Alas, I don't have a tank or the place to put a tank large enough to accommodate them at this time but a girl can dream.
  17. True they do get a decent size. J was flirting with sticking them in my new tank but realized that wasn't possible once I saw their max size. Ahh well. Another day, another tank.
  18. @Charose woot mystery solved! It is a super cool looking plant. It adds a lovely texture.
  19. The first one is what I was sold as ambulia and the second is a close up of my hornwort.
  20. Maybe a pair of apistogramma cacatuoides? the super red apistos? In my area at least they have been super hot popular and have been selling as quickly as my lfs can order them in.
  21. Ambulia of some sort? I just bought a plant that looks really similar to that from my lfs and that's how it was labled.
  22. I'd just watch it. I think you have it right side up though. Those nubs look thicker than the root growth but time will tell for sure.
